Background
Gandalf’s Maia identity is Olórin. Like the other Maiar sent to Middle-earth, he relinquished much of his power and wisdom and took the appearance of an elderly human. He has traveled among Middle-earth’s peoples for more than a thousand years, accumulating extensive knowledge and acquaintances. Círdan gave him Narya, the Ring of Fire 29 32.
Before meeting Allen, Gandalf had visited the area near the Old Ford and seen Beorn roaming there. The later appearance of Wilderness Town surprised him, prompting him to question Radagast about its origins 29.
Appearance
Gandalf stands approximately two meters tall and has an aged, kindly face with wise eyes. His untidy appearance contrasts with Saruman’s meticulously groomed presentation 29 32.
- Clothing: A tall, pointed blue wizard’s hat and a drab, dusty gray cloak 29 31.
- Hair: Poorly groomed hair and eyebrows, with a gray-white beard hanging over his chest 29.
- Staff: Carries a wooden staff, which he uses while walking and gesturing 29 31.
Personality
Gandalf is witty, approachable, and highly persuasive. His warm voice eases Allen’s initial nervousness, and he quickly wins the affection of Wilderness Town’s inhabitants. Allen finds it difficult to remain angry with him even after being left waiting in Bree for nearly a month 29 31 37.
His friendliness does not exclude caution. He initially invites Allen to travel partly so he can observe the unfamiliar town leader and have Galadriel assess him. Allen’s conduct eventually dispels his doubts, and Gandalf comes to regard Wilderness Town as a potential human stronghold against darkness 29 31.
Gandalf places his responsibilities above personal plans. After learning that the activity near the Golden Iris River may concern the One Ring, he abandons his intended journey to Rhûn and hurries to summon the White Council. His subsequent preparations take him repeatedly across Middle-earth and leave him visibly exhausted 31 35.

Close-Quarters Combat

- Círdan — White Council colleague and the Elf who entrusted Narya to him 32.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Meeting Allen
Gandalf first meets Allen and Beorn at Radagast’s cottage while investigating Wilderness Town. Allen claims descent from someone Gandalf knew long ago; although Gandalf cannot identify the supposed ancestor, he uses the claim to establish a friendly connection. He invites Allen on a journey intended to pass through Lothlórien and continue toward Rhûn, where rumors place the missing Thráin II 29.
The Golden Iris River and the White Council
During their journey, Gandalf and Allen fight Warg Riders, rescue villagers, and assist Saruman’s men against Half-orcs near the Golden Iris River. Gandalf had previously inspected Dol Guldur without uncovering its true threat because Sauron temporarily withdrew before his arrival 31.
Allen connects the rival search parties to the Ring Isildur carried when he died nearby. Gandalf had not known that part of Isildur’s history. Recognizing the significance of the information, he cancels the Rhûn journey and reaches Lothlórien with Allen after half a month of hurried travel 31.
At the White Council meeting, Saruman persuades the others to accept that the One Ring has washed into the sea. Discussion instead turns to attacking Dol Guldur. After Allen warns of Azog, Mount Gundabad’s Half-orcs, and Smaug’s possible involvement, Gandalf proposes using Thorin’s expedition to reclaim the Lonely Mountain or create an opening against the enemy 32.
Organizing the Lonely Mountain Expedition
Gandalf travels to Eriador to secure Ranger support, then scouts Dol Guldur and confirms Azog’s presence. Returning to Wilderness Town, he collects Allen, travels west with help from the Great Eagles, and waits for Thorin in Bree 35 37.
He persuades Thorin at the Prancing Pony and names Bilbo as his chosen burglar. At Bag End, he defends that choice and distinguishes Allen’s supporting role from Bilbo’s assignment 37 38.
From the Troll Cave to Wilderness Town
Gandalf helps defeat the three Trolls and discovers Glamdring among their possessions. He subsequently leads the company to Rivendell, where Elrond examines Thorin’s map 40 41.
After the company is captured in Orc Town, Gandalf launches its escape and guides the survivors through the tunnels with magical light. Allen deliberately withholds his knowledge of the One Ring’s whereabouts, fearing that disclosure would place it within Saruman’s reach through the White Council 42 43.
Following the Great Eagles’ rescue, Gandalf treats Thorin at Carl Rock and accompanies the company to Wilderness Town 43.
Preparing the Attack on Dol Guldur
With Allen and Thorin’s friendship strengthened, Gandalf leaves the company in Allen’s care and prepares to rejoin the White Council. He declines Allen’s offer of military assistance and rides to Lothlórien, where Rangers, Saruman’s retainers, Rivendell’s warriors, and Galadriel’s forces are assembling 44 45.
Notable Quotes
“Lord Allen, we aren't going to war. You can't wander the wilderness wearing armor bright enough to blind Half-orcs. You need to dress like me—simply and inconspicuously.” 31
“If we can drive out the dragon occupying the Lonely Mountain, we will not only reclaim that vital northern stronghold, but also remove an obstacle to our attack on Dol Guldur.” 32
