Background / History

Petrification and the Science Kingdom

Senku was a high school student before a green light petrified humanity. He remained conscious within his stone shell, counting through roughly 3,700 years until his awakening. By the time he met Li Xiang, he had spent three months building a primitive shelter and developing survival tools 3 8.

After noticing cooking smoke in the forest, Senku prepared simple weapons before approaching its source, unsure whether another awakened person would share his ideals. He and Li Xiang subsequently survived a boar attack together and shared a meal at his camp 3.

Senku declared that he would establish a Science Kingdom, revive humanity, rebuild civilization from nothing, and investigate the cause of the petrification. Its first practical mission was making clothes for Li Xiang; their work produced two fire felt grass outfits after seven days 4.

Reviving Companions and Breaking with Tsukasa

Senku and Li Xiang perfected revival fluid after repeated experiments, first testing it successfully on a petrified swallow. They then awakened Taiju, whose strength allowed their cabin-reinforcement project to be completed in seven days 7 8.

Yuzuriha became their next revived companion. When lions attacked the group, Li Xiang and Taiju stayed behind while Senku escaped with Yuzuriha. Senku used his remaining revival fluid to awaken Tsukasa Shishio and ask him to rescue their friends 12 15.

Tsukasa initially helped develop the camp, but his goal of reviving only selected young people conflicted with Senku’s intention to restore all humanity. He eventually announced that he would kill Senku to prevent the old world’s return 17 18.

Senku’s group prepared black powder while he accepted Li Xiang’s separate contingency plan. During their confrontation, Tsukasa struck Senku’s nerve center and left him unconscious. Li Xiang incapacitated Tsukasa with a laxative, carried Senku away, and used revival fluid on a remaining patch of petrification at his neck to restore him 21 22 24 25 33.

Arrival at Ishigami Village

Senku and Li Xiang sent Taiju and Yuzuriha to infiltrate Tsukasa’s camp, then traveled in the opposite direction. After finding Kohaku trapped beneath fallen logs, they constructed a pulley system to free her. She led them to Ishigami Village, where Li Xiang offered to treat her sick older sister, Ruri 26 27.

Li Xiang diagnosed Ruri’s illness as bacterial pneumonia, and Senku agreed to help manufacture medicine. Chrome’s mineral collection supplied valuable raw materials, while Senku arranged for a village potter to make a heat-resistant medicine pot 29 30 31.

To recruit village labor, Senku offered ramen alongside Li Xiang’s clothing initiative. The resulting workforce helped build a generator. Meanwhile, the discovery of Tsukasa’s scouts led Senku and Li Xiang to prepare a deception using Gen as bait; after Homura’s capture, they prioritized curing Ruri and undermining Tsukasa’s camp from within 33 35 36 37 40.

Village Chief and Ruri’s Cure

Senku entered the village tournament after Li Xiang explained that its winner would control the village’s workforce and supplies. He treated the contest as a team effort rather than training to win through personal strength. Gen surrendered their match, allowing Senku to advance, and Senku ultimately became champion and Village Chief 37 41 42 44.

Village custom required the chief to marry Ruri. Senku agreed, then immediately announced a divorce after securing the brewing supplies needed for his research 44.

Senku and Chrome’s sulfuric acid expedition was interrupted by Hyoga’s ambush. Their group escaped to a tree above the acid pools, where five people had only three gas masks. Once they could resume collection, Ginro saved Senku from slipping into the acid 46 47 49.

After returning with the final ingredient, Senku and Chrome worked for three days and nights to complete their first antibiotic. Li Xiang administered the treatment, and Ruri eventually recovered completely. With contact lost between the village and their infiltrators, Senku agreed that a telephone was their next priority 49 50.

Appearance

  • Hair: A tall, upright, scallion-shaped hairstyle; silver hair is also explicitly described 8 26 45.
  • Eyes: Clear, ruby-red eyes 10.
  • Remaining petrification: A small, inconspicuous patch of stone remained at the back of his neck after his initial awakening 25.

Personality

Senku is ambitious and openly excited by scientific discovery. He describes rebuilding civilization as “ten billion percent exciting,” but his goal also reflects homesickness and attachment to his father, Taiju, Yuzuriha, and the modern world he lost 4 6 10.

He approaches problems through experimentation, precise measurement, and practical division of labor. Although he can sustain extraordinary effort on research, he readily identifies brainpower—not physical strength—as his specialty. He also accepts corrections when Li Xiang points out that a workable scientific method still requires enough manpower to implement 3 5 7 22.

His manner is sarcastic, blunt, and frequently accompanied by a “kukuku” laugh. He willingly uses deception against stronger opponents, including Li Xiang’s laxative scheme and the staged capture of Gen. His abrupt divorce announcement similarly shows how little ceremony interests him beside obtaining research materials 26 37 44.

Despite his detached presentation, Senku is deeply concerned for his companions. He desperately seeks a way to save Li Xiang and Taiju during the lion attack, calmly faces Tsukasa’s strike while urging his friends to live peacefully, and volunteers to undertake dangerous chemical extraction himself 15 23 24 41.

Abilities & Skills

Scientific Knowledge and Experimentation

Senku applies modern scientific knowledge to materials available in the wilderness 4 5 22.

  • Explains plant-fiber processing, spinning, and handweaving, while observing and refining the clothing-production process 4.
  • Develops volcanic-ash cement for strengthening and weatherproofing their wooden shelter 5 8.
  • Recognizes useful minerals in Chrome’s collection and organizes equipment needed for medicine production 29 30 31.
  • Supervises precise measurements, purification, and repeated trials rather than relying on a single successful guess 7 22 49.

Chemistry and Medicine Production

Senku supplies the chemical expertise behind the group’s revival and pharmaceutical projects, while Li Xiang provides medical diagnosis and treatment 7 29 50.

  • Perfects revival fluid with Li Xiang after numerous failed experiments and verifies its effect on a petrified bird 7.
  • Directs production of the group’s first handmade black powder 22.
  • Locates suitable sulfuric acid deposits and works with Chrome to produce an antibiotic for Ruri 49.
  • Initial revival-fluid supplies are limited, requiring the group to prioritize whom to awaken 15 19.

Mechanics, Electricity, and Optics

  • Pulley construction: Selects and shapes wooden components for the system used to lift the logs trapping Kohaku 27.
  • Electricity generation: Builds a working hand-cranked generator with a wooden frame, gears, and coils. Its output is initially weak, and he identifies water or wind power as possible future improvements 42.
  • Corrective lenses: Makes custom glasses using polished resin lenses for Little Watermelon’s severe nearsightedness 31 37.
  • Protective equipment: Works with Grandpa Fossil to manufacture gas masks for the sulfuric acid expedition; their protection allows only a limited period in hazardous conditions 45 46.

Strategy and Resource Management

  • Prioritizes reviving Taiju to overcome the team’s shortage of physical labor 7 8 19.
  • Sends Taiju and Yuzuriha into Tsukasa’s camp as undercover operatives 26.
  • Uses food incentives to recruit village workers and pursues the chief’s position for access to resources 36 37.
  • Approaches the tournament as a team contest, relying on stronger allies rather than his own fighting ability 41.

Endurance and Physical Limitations

  • Maintains conscious counting throughout approximately 3,700 years of petrification 3 8.
  • Claims he can work on compelling research for three days without eating; the antibiotic project later keeps him and Chrome working with little sleep for three days and nights 3 49.
  • Has poor physical strength relative to his companions: Li Xiang carries him during the boar attack, and Taiju’s enthusiastic hugs can leave him unable to breathe 3 8.
  • Can still act effectively in emergencies, including striking the charging boar’s eye with a spear 3.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Simple weapons and spear — Prepared before meeting another survivor; the spear is used during the boar attack 3.
  • Charcoal pencil and stone slab — Used for recording his plans at camp 21.
