Background / History
Kohaku lived in Ishigami Village with her older sister, Ruri, the village priestess. Ruri had suffered from frailty and persistent respiratory illness since childhood. Following the village elders' advice, Kohaku fetched an enormous jar of hot spring water every day to bathe and wipe down her sister, hoping to ease her symptoms 27 28.
During one of these trips, a tree suddenly fell and pinned Kohaku beneath heavy logs. Senku and Li Xiang freed her with a pulley system. Although her legs were temporarily stiff and numb, she escaped serious injury and immediately worried about delivering Ruri's water. She thanked her rescuers and led them toward the village 27.
When Li Xiang offered to examine Ruri, Kohaku pleaded with Kinro and Ginro to admit the outsiders despite village rules. After permission was granted, she brought them directly to her sister. She subsequently joined their search for medicine-making materials, offering her knowledge of the mountains, ores, herbs, and terrain. Ruri ultimately recovered completely after treatment with the team's antibiotics 28 29 50.
Appearance
- Hair: Golden; described as short at her introduction, while later passages describe long hair usually secured in a practical high ponytail 27 100.
- Eyes: Clear blue eyes 27.
- Build and features: Slender despite her extraordinary strength, with striking, well-defined features and beautiful bone structure 100 208.
- Harem infiltration disguise: Wore a simple pale-colored dress, understated makeup, and her conditioned hair loose over her shoulders, softening her usual fierce appearance 100 216.
Personality
Kohaku is fiercely protective of the people close to her. Her daily efforts for Ruri continued despite the heavy burden and dangerous mountain route; even immediately after being rescued, her sister's care took priority over her own discomfort. She also challenged village restrictions when they prevented a doctor from reaching Ruri 27 28.
Her confidence in her fighting ability can make her favor direct action. She proposed fighting through Tsukasa's checkpoints and later asked whether the Science Kingdom could begin its attack. However, she also recognized that Xeno's superior technology required a different approach rather than a frontal confrontation 60 70 149.
Her gentleness is especially apparent with frightened companions and Watermelon. She comforted Li Xiang after the sulfuric-acid gorge jump and reassured the older Watermelon that growing up would not change their bond. This loyalty can override caution: when Stanley captured her teammates, she shook off Gen's warning and rushed out to rescue them 65 170 177.
