"Have we seen a living ghost?"

Ye Fei carefully felt around. Once he confirmed that this was the tower wall, a chill crept down his spine.

This was truly bizarre.

"Stop looking. The tower has sealed itself. Unless we pass the Octagonal Tower's trials, we can't get out."

Jiang Mengyun spoke as she stared at a tower wall inscribed with words.

"Trials?"

Ye Fei turned around in confusion.

Only then did he notice the dense inscriptions covering the wall in front of Jiang Mengyun.

Curious, he walked over to the wall and began reading carefully.

This tower was called the Array God Tower and had six floors. Only by passing the trial on their current floor could they enter the next.

Only after passing the trials on the first five floors could they reach the top and leave the Octagonal Tower.

Otherwise, they would be trapped here until they died.

The Octagonal Tower opened once every twenty years, for one month each time. So far, no one had ever successfully cleared it.

That was roughly what the inscription said.

"Doesn't that mean we'll never get out if we can't pass the trials?"

Ye Fei's heart sank, and he asked with some concern.

"That seems to be the case. We'd better hurry and tackle the tower."

Jiang Mengyun's expression was grim as well.

Neither of them had anticipated this outcome.

They had thought obtaining the legendary treasure would not be difficult. Now, it seemed they had been far too naive.

"But what exactly are we supposed to tackle?"

Looking around the empty interior, Ye Fei was at a loss for words.

Although the inscription mentioned trials, it said nothing whatsoever about what they involved.

The tower was spacious, but utterly empty. There was not even a staircase leading to the second floor.

Their only clue was the dense array of runes covering the walls.

Ye Fei had only discovered those after probing with his divine sense.

They were invisible to the naked eye.

But when he probed with his divine sense, he could clearly perceive the black runes densely covering the tower walls.

These black runes were peculiar, as though written characters had been hacked apart with blades and axes, leaving scattered pieces in utter disarray.

"Let's start with these runes."

Jiang Mengyun simply closed her eyes and sat cross-legged on the floor.

Seeing this, Ye Fei said no more. He released all his divine sense, enveloping the entire first floor of the Octagonal Tower.

Then the countless runes flashed through his mind like lightning.

Ye Fei swept his divine sense over the runes one by one, but found no clues.

Afterward, he began sorting and categorizing the runes, trying all manner of approaches. He even pounded the tower walls with his fists, but nothing worked.

"How on earth are we supposed to do this?"

Two days later, Ye Fei finally broke down. He gave up studying them and sat on the floor in a huff.

"This really is troublesome."

Jiang Mengyun was in much the same state. She opened her beautiful eyes and let out a soft sigh.

Two days had passed, yet they still had no leads.

And this was only the first floor.

What would the remaining floors be like?

Even Jiang Mengyun, a mighty Nascent Soul cultivator, was growing anxious.

"What rotten luck. If I'd known it would be like this, I wouldn't have come."

Ye Fei could not help sighing either and simply lay down on the floor.

After two days of constantly studying the runes, he really was exhausted.

His divine sense was nothing like Jiang Mengyun's. He was only at the Qi Refining stage, and using it for so long drained him heavily. He simply could not keep going.

"Get some rest first!"

Seeing Ye Fei's condition, Jiang Mengyun shook her head gently, equally helpless.

And so Jiang Mengyun continued studying the runes, while Ye Fei lay on the floor, staring at the ceiling of the first floor, his thoughts unknown.

"Uncle-Master Jiang, have you noticed? These aren't runes at all. They're fragments of characters that have been split apart."

An hour later, Ye Fei suddenly sat up and spoke with some excitement.

Just after lying down, a spark of inspiration had flashed through his mind: he could look at these runes from a different angle.

When he tried it, he actually discovered a clue.

"Fragments of characters that have been split apart?"

"They don't look like it. There aren't any radicals or anything."

Jiang Mengyun examined them again and gently shook her head.

"They weren't simply separated. It looks as though they were cut apart with a sword."

Ye Fei frowned slightly as he spoke, carefully examining them.

"Yes, they were cut apart with a sword."

Ye Fei stood up, his brow immediately relaxing as he spoke excitedly.

"That does seem to be the case."

With Ye Fei's reminder, Jiang Mengyun soon saw it too.

"Uncle-Master Jiang, if I'm not mistaken, we're supposed to piece the characters back together."

"Perhaps we'll find the answer once we've assembled them."

Ye Fei offered his conjecture.

"In that case, hurry and start piecing them together. We don't have much time."

Jiang Mengyun nodded.

Thus, the two sat cross-legged on the floor and released their divine sense, enveloping the entire first floor of the Octagonal Tower.

Even with a breakthrough, piecing together these countless fragments of characters was no simple task.

The fragments were far too small. Some were even just punctuation marks.

In some characters, even a simple horizontal stroke had been cut into three pieces.

"This is the character for 'beginning,' and this is the character for 'approach'..."

Guiding them with his divine sense, Ye Fei gradually brought together the fragments that could form characters.

Sure enough, by following the cut marks on each fragment, he really did manage to assemble the characters one by one.

Unlike Ye Fei, who had made a breakthrough, Jiang Mengyun ran into difficulties.

Although she could tell which fragments formed a character, her divine sense could not move those fragments at all.

This left her utterly speechless.

With no other choice, she could only help Ye Fei.

As they assembled more and more characters, fewer fragments remained, and their progress grew faster.

A day later, the two finally assembled all the fragments on this floor into characters.

The moment the final character was completed, the black characters suddenly shuddered. Their black coloring dissipated bit by bit, as though evaporating.

Once the black had faded completely, their golden forms were revealed. Every character had turned gold.

Then the golden characters automatically arranged themselves in order.

As soon as they finished arranging themselves, a sudden radiance flashed. They all transformed into golden points of light, which gathered together to form an extremely long golden strand.

The moment the golden strand formed, it darted into the space between Ye Fei's brows and began pouring inside bit by bit.

Ye Fei tried to dodge, but the strand was so fast that he could not evade it.

"It hurts!"

As the strand poured into him, Ye Fei clutched his head with both hands and began crying out in pain.

It felt as though someone was forcibly pouring countless things into his mind, making his head ache as if it would split apart.

"Ye Fei, hold on."

Watching the golden strand slowly pour into the space between Ye Fei's brows, Jiang Mengyun realized something and hurriedly called out to him.

"It hurts so much."

Ye Fei kept crying out in pain.

The sensation was even more intense than what he had experienced while tempering his body.

Body tempering only caused physical pain, but this pain came from the depths of his soul.

How could he endure it?

What should I do?

Seeing Ye Fei in such agony, Jiang Mengyun grew inwardly anxious.

She knew this was probably some form of forcibly imparted insight.

If Ye Fei could successfully receive it, it would surely benefit him greatly.

Seeing that Ye Fei was about to reach his limit, Jiang Mengyun lightly bit her red lip and sighed.

"Ah! I can only try that method."

With a wave of her delicate hand, one of her undergarments disappeared.

Fortunately, her outer robe concealed everything, leaving no visible sign.

Without that undergarment blocking it, a peculiar fragrance began wafting from Jiang Mengyun's body.

The fragrance soon drifted into Ye Fei's nostrils.

"It smells so good."

Ye Fei, who had been clutching his head and crying out in pain a moment earlier, immediately raised his head and stared blankly at Jiang Mengyun, his face dazed.

Even so, when his gaze fell on Jiang Mengyun's chest, he still could not help drooling as he murmured:

"So big! So round!"
