Background / History
Ye Fei grew up with his blind father, Ye Canglong, in a dilapidated home at the southern end of Hidden Dragon Village. He practiced martial arts from childhood and knew the surrounding woods well. His father taught him to resist injustice and defend his dignity, but also warned him that an unbeatable enemy sometimes required compromise rather than a futile death 1 2.
Despite his martial talent, Ye Fei initially tested as having no spiritual roots. Liu Qianqian and Wang Hai both possessed rare dual roots, and Liu Qianqian’s father accepted the Wang Household’s betrothal gifts. After Ye Fei knocked Wang Hai unconscious, Ye Canglong gave him a purple jade plaque and sent him to seek an opportunity at the Free and Easy Gate. The journey to Green Pine Mountain took half a year 1 2.
Ye Fei initially knew little of his parents’ cultivation history. Azure Dragon later revealed that Ye Canglong possessed a heavenly spiritual root and that Luo Yue was Luo Ying’s elder sister. Deng Chao subsequently identified Luo Yue as Ye Fei’s mother, a former strongest cultivator of the Divine Feather Kingdom who had ascended to the Upper Realm. This also established that Ye Fei’s master, Luo Ying, was his maternal aunt 25 37.
Appearance
- A thin figure when he emerges from Azure Dragon Valley 3.
- By his body-tempering training, has a tall, straight frame and firm, well-defined muscles despite being younger than seventeen 29.
- Wears a gray robe after recovering from his first waterfall-training collapse 29.
- Uses a dark-complexioned Human-Skin Mask, blue cloak, and replacement shoes to alter his appearance while selling herbs 21.
Personality
Ye Fei is determined to cultivate despite repeated setbacks. When his mixed root makes progress painfully slow, he refuses to abandon the hope of improving it. His motivation includes honoring his father’s sacrifices and becoming strong enough to avoid further humiliation 2 5 12.
Dignity is central to his conduct. He resists Duan Hong’s robbery even when outmatched, and later helps Du Yuan because Du Yuan shows the backbone to oppose Jiang Feng. He also returns courtesy without using his nominal-disciple status to demand deference from friendly disciples 6 13 40 41.
His early fearlessness develops into tactical caution. Against Liu Yihong’s ambush, he abandons straightforward resistance, secretly lights Beast-Luring Incense, and uses the Azure Dragon Sword to fake his death. He is also willing to kill an enemy by surprise rather than insist on a fair duel 18 19.
Ye Fei is visibly attracted to Jiang Mengyun, sometimes becoming distracted or embarrassed around her. During the painful reception of the Array God’s legacy, he nearly loses control with her but stops after seeing her tear. Later, he deliberately calms himself when the memory of that encounter distracts him again 15 49 50.
Abilities & Skills
Qi Cultivation and Divine Sense
- Practices the Free and Easy True Formula, converting spiritual energy into true qi and circulating it through his meridians 5 11.
- Uses divine sense to investigate his surroundings, manipulate objects, and memorize manuals 7.
- Reaches a divine-sense radius of ten zhang at the fifth layer and fifteen zhang at the peak ninth layer 16 39.
- His five-element mixed root initially requires separate refinement of different types of qi, making absorption extremely inefficient 5.
- Jiang Mengyun attributes his exceptional strength among equal-realm cultivators partly to his multiple spiritual roots and combined qi-and-body cultivation; treasures and secret arts remain important factors 41.
Swordsmanship
- Heaven-Piercing Tyrant Slash — An inexpensive, low-tier technique that consumes little true qi. Ye Fei uses it for sustained combat practice against an Azurewave Kun Wolf 7 17.
- Nine Leaning Luo Swords — Luo Ying’s supreme technique, bought for only two spirit stones. It repeatedly allows Ye Fei to exert strength beyond his cultivation layer 12 17 41.
- True-qi economy — At the fourth layer, a single use of the first sword consumes nearly one-fifth of his true qi, forcing him to use it sparingly 16.
| Technique | Documented Application |
|---|---|
| White Rainbow Pierces the Sun | The first sword; kills an Earth-Splitting Beast with a ranged strike from more than five zhang away 14. |
| Golden Goose Across the Sky | The second sword; helps him display seventh-layer strength while at the fifth layer, and later shatters Jiang Feng’s sword shadows 17 40. |
| Sweeping the Four Directions | The third sword; consumes 60% of his true qi at the middle sixth layer. At the seventh layer, its power can rival a ninth-layer cultivator’s strike 20 33. |
Body Refinement and Defense
- Combines the Body Tempering Formula, Skin Refining Pills, and waterfall impacts to temper his skin 27 28 29.
- Successfully resists cuts from his magical-artifact longsword, though Jiang Mengyun warns that spirit artifacts can still injure him 29.
- His strengthened body lets him withstand the cold a hundred zhang beneath the Azure Dragon Pool’s edge 30.
- Blocks Jiang Feng’s sword with his arm and destroys the attacks of Free and Easy Three Points with uninjured fists 40 41.
- Begins practicing Elephant Armor Art, a four-level defensive technique; his Qi Refining cultivation permits only its first level 42.
Movement and Escape
- Mistlike Step — A movement technique used to evade Demon Beasts and create distance during pursuit 12 15.
- Earth Escape — Allows him to burrow underground to cultivate near the Azure Dragon Pool’s spirit vein 30.
- Terrain familiarity — His upbringing in the mountains helps him escape four second-layer disciples while only at the first layer 7.
- Concealment — Hides inside the Azure Dragon Sword to evade pursuit, survive an ambush, and avoid Wang Changqing’s divine sense 18 35.
Alchemy and Herb Cultivation
- Learns from an Alchemy Formula Jade Slip and Pill Canon, mastering complicated hand seals through a month of practice 26 27.
- Successfully refines his first Qi-Replenishing Pills on his second attempt: four lowest-grade and two low-grade pills 27.
- Uses precise divine-sense control to remove residue from medicinal liquids; even at the sixth layer, this purification is strenuous 27.
- Identifies inconsistent merging rates as the cause of his first failed batch 27.
- Grows medicinal herbs and spirit-infused rice, collects seeds, and uses Azure Dragon Pool water on medicinal fields 12 26 39.
- The accelerated Azure Dragon Medicine Field supplies enough ingredients for repeated alchemy practice 39.
Formation Arts
- Receives the Array God’s legacy as formation insights forced into his Sea of Consciousness; absorption causes severe pain and unconsciousness 48 49.
- Studies those insights to dismantle the staircase barriers in the Array God Tower 48.
- After receiving the fifth-floor insights, breaks a treasure-protecting formation by striking sixteen specific points with a spirit-artifact longsword 50.
- Retrieves the Array Canon and three formation discs, but postpones studying them until after leaving the secret realm 50.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Purple jade plaque — Originally hidden in Ye Canglong’s stone pillow. Carries Ye Fei’s connection to the Free and Easy Gate and later opens the protective formation leading to Formation God Hall 1 2 46.
- Azure Dragon Sword — A blood-bound pseudo-immortal artifact containing the former Azure Dragon Valley. Ye Fei can enter it through divine sense, but Azure Dragon says he must reach at least Mahayana before wielding it against enemies 11.
- Azure Dragon Pool and top-grade spirit vein — Provide dense cultivation energy; their cold limits how deeply he can cultivate 30.
- Azure Dragon Waterfall — Supports his body-tempering training 28 29.
- Azure Dragon Medicine Field — Time flows ten times faster within the field 10.
- Spirit-Washing Tree — Produces fruits that improve his spiritual root; it can absorb spirit stones, spiritual herbs, and Demon Beast corpses, with increasing resource demands for successive fruitings 9 12 16 30.
- Magical-artifact and spirit-artifact longswords — Uses a basic longsword early on; Jiang Mengyun later gives him a spirit-artifact sword, and he reveals two spirit-artifact longswords during the Wang Hai rematch 7 16 33.
- Medicine God Cauldron — Uses it to refine his first successful Qi-Replenishing Pills 27.
- Human-Skin Mask — Alters his face. The merchant claims it can withstand scrutiny from cultivators below Core Formation 21.
- Golden Sword Talisman Treasure — Given by Jiang Mengyun before his homecoming; activates a short sword to intercept the giant sword attacking him near Wang Lin 31 34.
- Shadowless Boots — Increase his movement speed to more than three times its previous level when supplied with true qi 42.
- Storage ring — Entrusted to him by Luo Ying to hold the sect’s secret-realm harvest 44.
- Array Canon and formation discs — Retrieves the canon and green Defense, red Attack, and black Time discs from the Array God Tower 50.
Relationships
- Ye Canglong — Father and childhood martial-arts mentor. Sends him to the Free and Easy Gate; later disappears after reportedly killing an immortal master. Luo Ying reveals that he lost his sight while breaking Medicine God Hall’s entrance array 1 2 31 44.
