Background / History

Azure Dragon was attacked shortly after taking human form, before he could mature. His attacker was a Yinglong that had evolved from a venomous serpent. The attack tore his form and spirit apart, but the Azure Dragon Clan’s Sacred Relic allowed his divine soul to break through a spatial barrier and escape to the Human Realm 10.

He survived in this disembodied state for three thousand years. Without the nourishment of his vital blood, his human manifestation aged into an old man. He described the thousand-year trade he later made with Ye Fei as probably the limit of what his remaining divine soul could endure 10.

Azure Dragon created Azure Dragon Valley to find someone capable of recovering his body. Jiang Mengyun, Luo Yue, and Ye Canglong knew of his existence, but none qualified for his plan: he needed a mortal without a spiritual root so that the Spirit-Washing Tree could fulfill its purpose. Ye Fei also needed the tree’s approval; without it, his first fall into the valley would have ended with him becoming its nourishment 11 25.

Appearance

Azure Dragon manifests as either an illusory dragon or an elderly man in azure robes. He attributes his aged human appearance to the three thousand years spent separated from his physical body 9 10.

Personality

Azure Dragon combines protective concern for Ye Fei with ruthlessness toward others. When confronting Liu Yishan, he explicitly says that harming other people does not concern him, but targeting Ye Fei does. He then uses Liu Yishan’s flesh and blood to nourish the Spirit-Washing Tree 9.

His dealings with Ye Fei are frank rather than coercive. He admits that Ye Fei’s eventual ascension is only a gamble, explains that recovering his body could be life-threatening, and offers to release him unharmed if he refuses. As a mentor, he praises courtesy and practical judgment while repeatedly warning against dependence on treasures or expectations that others will determine one’s fate 10 11 23 25.
