The Demon King emerges from darkness with “evil yet bright” eyes described as carrying darkness and terror 331.

Personality

Before his defeat, the Demon King is proud, combative, and openly ambitious. He rejects Zhou Yuan's appeal to avoid conflict, demands part of the human realm for the Demon Race, and swears to take it after being defeated 331.

He is also opportunistic and untrustworthy. He secretly conspires with the Demon Tribe Leader to poison Zhou Yuan, then turns on that ally when their plan fails 333. When Zhou Yuan seals his strength and leaves him to flee, however, his pride gives way to desperation; hunger and helplessness eventually make capture seem preferable to life on the run 335 336.

After his memories are erased, he becomes fiercely devoted to Zhou Yuan as “Zhou Ci,” accepting the fabricated belief that Zhou Yuan is his master. His loyalty is impulsive rather than measured: he kills the Demon Tribe Leader to prove that he is not the Demon King described by Xiao Yuxian 337 338. His later betrayal of Zhou Yuan reveals that this relationship ultimately cannot endure 405 406.

Conflict over the Human Realm

After Zhou Yuan defeats the Demon Race's leader, the Demon King confronts him and proposes that the Demon Race be granted part of the human realm. Zhou Yuan refuses, declaring that the human realm cannot be divided. The Demon King is defeated and retreats after vowing to return and occupy it 331.

Poison Plot and Capture

The Demon King secretly allies with the Demon Tribe Leader, who attempts to poison Zhou Yuan. Zhou Yuan only pretends to drink the wine, exposes the conspiracy, and captures both plotters after they turn on each other 333.

Zhou Yuan refuses to execute them immediately, arguing that their deaths could destabilize the Demon Realm and Demon Race. The pair escape using the Demon Tribe Leader's puppet technique, but Zhou Yuan's taboos continue to suppress them and prevent a genuine escape 334 335.

Transformation into Zhou Ci

After their flight reduces them to hunger and desperation, Zhou Yuan recaptures the pair. He feeds the Demon King a pill that inflicts severe pain and erases his memories rather than killing him 336 337.

When he awakens, the Demon King accepts a new identity, Zhou Ci, and believes Zhou Yuan is his master. To prove this claimed loyalty, he kills the Demon Tribe Leader, ending the former alliance 337 338.

Journey with Zhou Yuan

As Zhou Ci, he accompanies Zhou Yuan into the mortal realm to investigate unexplained deaths. He is eager to retaliate against the Demon Realm if it proves responsible, but Zhou Yuan restrains his impatience and insists on investigating first 339.

He later travels with Zhou Yuan and Ao Guang, helps conceal Ao Guang's stowaway journey, and repeatedly displays a quick temper during encounters at an East Sea exchange meet 346 350.

Betrayal and Death

While Zhou Yuan battles Luohu, the Demon King appears to approach as an ally before launching a surprise attack from behind in coordination with Luohu 405. Zhou Yuan considers the betrayal unforgivable and kills him without granting another chance 406.
