These developments concern different groups of Spirit Monsters, rather than a single individual's cultivation path.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Awakening as a Spirit Monster | 159 | Wild sunflowers awaken intelligence during Wang Quan's ritual. He also successfully awakens young sunflowers with the Enlightenment Art. |
| Passive bloodline purification | 194 | Workers inside Wang Quan's Foundation Establishment Dao Platform gain purer bloodlines and stronger bodies without cultivating; gathered moonlight further improves their bloodlines. |
| Repeated bloodline evolution | 212 | Many Dao Platform workers undergo three or four evolutions within five or six years, developing additional horns, wings, and spellcasting abilities. |
| Transformation into demons | 212 | A small number overcome the required internal changes and become demons capable of assuming completely human bodies. Most can rival cultivators physically present in the Second-Layer World. |
| Initial mastery of the Way of Idiocy | 325 | Bump Spirit Monsters gain an initial grasp of its Fundamental Method after three days and nights. The method subsequently circulates on its own. |
| Further bloodline limits overcome | 619 | Linking safe zones to multiple worlds purifies Real World Spirit Monsters' bloodlines, transforming them into new varieties without deliberate cultivation. |
Origins and Biology
- Awakening: Spirit Monsters can arise when plants gain intelligence, and the Enlightenment Art can deliberately produce this awakening 159.
- Natural phenomena: Morning clouds, evening clouds, and twilight can become spirits. Wang Quan temporarily awakens a streak of sunset glow, while other cultivators awaken Twilight Qi and light 127 745.
- Reproduction: Spirit Monster parents do not reliably produce Spirit Monster offspring. Normally, most offspring are ordinary beasts, with fewer than one in ten awakening intelligence; in Stone City, the proportion reaches approximately half 636.
- Artificial varieties: Crossbreeding, grafting, and bodily modification can create new kinds. Riverside Mountain also offers modifications joining human upper bodies to Spirit Monster lower bodies 195 452.
- Evolution into monsters: “Monster” is commonly used for an evolved Spirit Monster. Such beings can assume fully human forms and are described as equivalent to human Foundation Establishment cultivators 79.
- Intelligence is not universal: Unintelligent Spirit Monsters also exist and are particularly valuable to martial lineages as long-lived sources of dung and blood 489.
Appearance
- Spirit Monsters retain widely differing forms, including insects, birds, beasts, aquatic creatures, plants, and flowers 176.
- Newly awakened sunflowers develop eyes and mouths on their flower faces 159.
- Object spirits include millstones, stones, furniture, kitchen utensils, farming tools, cannons, and crossbow bolts 317 523 524 547.
- Bloodline evolution can add body parts: some Ox Spirits develop six pairs of horns, while Butterfly Spirits grow additional wings 212.
- Evolved demons can become human internally as well as externally, including their organs, bones, flesh, and blood 212.
Abilities & Skills
Cultivation and Spellcasting
- Spirit Monsters use demonic power, and some also cultivate spells and Fundamental Methods 183 325.
- Abilities differ by variety. Evolved Ox Spirits can cast different elemental spells through their horns 212.
- Their anatomy can support different combat tendencies: arms modeled on ox and tiger spirits favor close combat, while vine and bird spirit arms favor spellcasting in Wang Quan's Multiple Arms Art 176.
- Evolution does not guarantee a well-developed magical discipline. Many evolved monsters lack a coherent spell system; others concentrate on strengthening flesh and blood for close combat 79.
- Individuals described as Golden Core and Purple Mansion Spirit Monsters exist. Wang Quan examines specimens of both and makes them his guards 475.
Ritual Worship
- Spirit Monsters worship the sun, moon, stars, seasons, and other directions or forces, contributing to cultivation and large-scale rituals 691.
- Their worship can strengthen allied cultivators' spells during battle 635.
- Specialized breeding can produce dedicated worshippers. Incense Earth Spike Spirits continuously carry incense and worship the sun to improve sunlight gathering and refinement 195.
- Ritual service is dangerous: Thunderfire causes Spirit Monsters attending Wang Quan's grand sacrificial ceremony to collapse 247.
Material Production and Regeneration
- Flesh, blood, dung, organs, hides, fur, and horns are used as food, medicines, manufacturing materials, and ritual supplies 363 452 489.
- Some Spirit Monsters deliberately cut off and sell their own flesh for spending money 691.
- Certain shell-bearing varieties repeatedly shed tempered shells and regrow replacements through spells, supplying Thousand Mechanisms Daoist with materials 487.
- Regeneration is variety-specific. Incense Earth Spike Spirits have a chance to become two separate Spirit Monsters after being cut in half 195.
Learned and Implanted Skills
- Spirit Monsters improve their manual skills through practice, becoming proficient at hauling materials and breaking rocks 184.
- Workers entering Wang Quan's Dao Platform receive instinct-like knowledge of brick maintenance, lacquer work, murals, and decorative painting 184.
- Memories and loyalties can also be imposed. Newly raised Sun Flower Spirits receive memories directing loyalty toward Wang Quan, Riverside Mountain, sunlight refinement, and reproduction 164.
Notable Varieties
| Variety | Distinguishing Traits |
|---|---|
| Sun Flower Spirits | A name Wang Quan gives to sunflowers producing purified sunlight. He encourages their reproduction and gives them to Qian Xiuyue to raise 159. |
| Incense Earth Spike Spirits | Artificially bred from centipede, spider, hedgehog, earthworm, and other Spirit Monsters. They resemble hedgehogs with numerous long limbs and are conditioned from birth to worship the sun 195. |
| Chive Spirit Monsters | Lack fighting ability but can grow without limit while both feet remain on the earth. They feed herbivorous Spirit Monsters, supporting Stone City's food cycle 247. |
| Bump Spirit Monsters | Bear growths shaped like ruyi, mirrors, pagodas, and weapons, with unusual abilities. They become practitioners of the Way of Idiocy and specialists in cleansing and refining brains 323 324 350. |
| Twilight-born spirits | Awakened from Twilight Qi or light on the Heavenly Gate Battlefield. Their strong foundations make them promising future great demons and producers of special materials 745. |
Bump Spirit Monsters' Origins
- Ying Jiaren determines that ninety-nine percent are reincarnations of powerful Evil beings, many formerly the strongest Evil within a particular building 685.
- Before becoming Evil, those beings had earlier lives as cultivators, great demons, and other beings. Wang Quan verifies this history by revealing a Bump Spirit Monster's past lives through a ritual 685.
- Some retain fragments of earlier identities. A butterfly Bump Spirit Monster remembers being a One-Way Passage powerhouse and recognizes that the Way of Idiocy will turn it into high-grade material 382.
Society and Economy
Specialized Labor
| Work | Examples |
|---|---|
| Plant cultivation | Earthworm and aardvark spirits turn soil; rabbits regulate haze grass growth through breathing; dragonflies and mantises hunt pests 72. |
| Fertilization | Leafhoppers supply urine, bears produce dung, and dung beetles bury manure to enrich soil 72. |
| Construction | Tiger and bear spirits haul rocks, ox spirits plow, and pangolins and rock maggots clear caves and crevices 125. |
| City expansion | Millstone spirits compact earth; Stone Spirits position themselves as building materials; Tree Spirits and Giant Serpent Spirits form launching structures for heavy workers 317. |
| Commerce | Spirit Monsters work in human cities, operate food shops, and compete over spirit medicines and unusual materials 204. |
| Food service | Kitchen-utensil and furniture spirits prepare, carry, and serve food alongside other Spirit Monsters 547 750. |
| Military support | Spirit Monsters serve as mounts, load artillery, and fight as awakened cannons, catapults, and projectiles 317 523 524. |
Status and Treatment
- Safety can outweigh wages: Dependents staying with Wang Quan refuse to leave because they have food, work, and protection from abduction or disappearance. Some work without pay to gain experience and improve their marriage prospects 79.
- Recognition is exceptional: The Stone Mill Spirit weeps with pride when human Foundation Establishment cultivators address her as a fellow Daoist after she obtains level-one permissions 264.
- Scarcity creates coercion: Stone City's food shortages drive Spirit Monsters into debt and violent competition for manure, which can be exchanged for food and other rewards 251.
- Labor and food supplies overlap: City enforcers send offenders to the kitchen and eventually provoke ill-tempered residents into misconduct to maintain that supply 610.
- Exploitation is not limited to humans: Medicinal spirits agree to work after being promised eventual freedom, a trade, and the possibility of enslaving other Spirit Monsters themselves 734.
History
Wang Quan's Early Workforce
Wang Quan hires more than thirty skilled Spirit Monsters to tend haze grass for two years. Their coordinated agricultural work supports the plant growth that eases his Yin Spirit's urge to transform. Later, Fellow Daoist Ma organizes tens of thousands to develop his valley's roads, buildings, and farmland 72 125.
Thousands subsequently enter his Foundation Establishment Dao Platform, shrinking to approximately peanut size and receiving maintenance skills. As the platform grows, its workers gain stronger bodies and purer bloodlines; some eventually evolve into demons but remain in his service and recruit others 184 194 212.
Refuge and Settlement
Wang Quan gathers more than a thousand Spirit Monsters into a fortified manor with farmland, workshops, crop-growing rituals, and reinforced walls. He teaches them daily worship and asks them to defend the settlement together. The manor manifests in the Second-Layer World as a safe zone expected to last at least a hundred years 230.
Stone City later recruits over two hundred thousand farming Spirit Monsters. Chive spirits and herbivores initially help sustain its population, but continued growth produces severe food shortages despite expanding farmland and soil-improvement efforts 247 251.
Industrial Development and Warfare
Under the Three Kings, Riverside Mountain becomes an industrial center that breeds new Spirit Monster varieties and processes their bodily materials into commercial goods. Its enterprises provide employment for rural Spirit Monsters and sell products such as Riverside Immortal Bricks 452.
Stone City's second-generation Spirit Monsters eventually become a major fighting force against abnormal weather. Raised locally with stronger foundations and intense obedience to Wang Quan, they charge without fear of death. Fallen soldiers are stitched together, converted into vengeful ghosts or zombies, and returned to military or earth-vein work; meanwhile, a third generation sustains population growth despite battlefield losses 636.
