Background / History

Farming Origins and Sect Servitude

Lin Mo was born into a poor farming family in Locust Grass Village. Without money, influential connections, or strong spiritual roots, he entered Azure Cloud Sect as a chore disciple and spent three years performing menial work. Failure to become a cultivator within that period would mean expulsion 1 2.

His first home visit required repeated requests to the steward and thirteen low-grade spirit stones. The villagers welcomed him as an accomplished immortal disciple, unaware that he still emptied chamber pots. Unable to disappoint his proud parents, he invented stories about learning sword control and receiving guidance from senior disciples; Lin Xiaohe nevertheless sensed his unhappiness 1.

Discovery of the Treasure Gourd

During his home visit, Lin Mo obtained an emerald-green gourd from a stream and discovered that it could infuse ordinary water with spiritual qi. His first experiments nearly overfilled his dantian, but also offered a way to pass the approaching sect assessment. Watering wheat with its contents produced a ripe harvest in little more than a day 2 3.

After returning to the sect, he inherited Erhu’s spirit-plant-tending duties. He secretly revived a failing plant and began testing the water’s effects on his body. His eventual breakthrough into Qi Refining ended his chamber-pot duties and earned him an outer sect token, monthly resources, and a private courtyard 4 5 8 9.

Spirit Farming and Black-Market Trade

Lin Mo became responsible for a spirit field beside Liu Xianzong’s and began selling privately grown crops at the sect’s Black Market. His unusually fresh, high-quality plants secured favorable exchanges for spirit liquid. Passing that liquid through the gourd further improved both his cultivation and aptitude 10 14.

Accelerated harvests depleted his courtyard soil, prompting him to acquire a formation that replenished its spiritual energy. Gourd-treated Fire Spirit Fruit plants subsequently mutated and produced mystic-tier fruits. Those fruits financed the Evergreen Art, Turtle Breath Art, and supplies for his first special assignment 15 17 18 19 22 24.

Wang Qiuru mistook his farming results for evidence of a special constitution. Lin Mo encouraged the misunderstanding by saying that the Sect Master already knew, keeping his actual treasure concealed while benefiting from the protection others assumed he possessed 20 21.

Rescue of Cloud Crane High Person

A special assignment sent Lin Mo to White Jade Ravine to invite Cloud Crane High Person back to the sect. Instead, he found the formation expert gravely injured beneath rubble after an attack by Tai Sui Gate. He gave Cloud Crane his privately purchased Wound-Repair Pill and carried him home using a Hundred-Mile Talisman 23 26 27.

Cloud Crane rewarded him with a handwritten Basic Formation Diagram Guide and supported his request to shelter his family in the sect. Liu Cui permitted him to bring only Lin Xiaohe. Lin Mo returned home, left diluted spirit spring water for his parents, and brought his sister to live with him and Qin Sang Sang 29 30 31.

Gou Fengying and the Ghost-Crying Field

Xun Bin, the cloaked youth who had followed Lin Mo from the Black Market, traced his identity and tried to recruit him under Elder Gou Fengying. Lin Mo refused, citing Cloud Crane’s formation guide as evidence that he was already “half a disciple” of the guest elder. Xun Bin responded with threats, and Gou Fengying arranged for Lin Mo to restore the cursed Ghost-Crying Field 25 31 35 36.

Lin Mo sowed the ten-mu field and found an eerie aura draining its soil after nightfall. Ten drops of spirit spring water restored its spiritual energy and rapidly sprouted the wheat. To conceal the abnormal growth, he removed the seedlings and resowed the field; some transplanted seedlings later became his Golden-Light Wheat 38 39 41.

The wheat’s phantom was connected to the resentful ghost Du Li. The gourd made the phantom more solid and bound Du Li to Lin Mo as his subordinate. Du Li’s awakening gave Lin Mo a ninth-layer Qi Refining protector while his own cultivation remained at the peak of the first layer 46 47 48.

Gou Fengying also sent Xun Bin to investigate Lin Mo’s village. Xun Bin mistakenly identified the revived Old Locust Tree as his source of power and attacked it; its buds began regrowing after he left. Meanwhile, Lin Mo continued cultivating, reached the third layer, and successfully ripened the Ghost-Crying Field’s wheat after three months 47 49.

Appearance

  • Build: Sturdy, with a taller and straighter bearing than before his three years at the sect; his father also noticed that he had become more handsome 1 4.
  • Sect clothing: Wears a pale-blue outer sect robe after his promotion 9.
  • Black Market disguise: Uses masks, dark clothing, and later a bark-and-vine mask with a black cloak concealing his figure 21 33.
  • Later bearing: By the third layer of Qi Refining, his movements convey steady composure and put others at ease. Continued physical improvement also makes him slightly taller 49 50.

Personality

Lin Mo initially wants a secure place in the sect and a comfortable life for his family rather than supremacy over other cultivators. His ambitions expand after obtaining the gourd and experiencing continued prejudice: he begins imagining inner sect membership, higher office, and eventually seeing the wider world 3 5 9 11.

He is cautious, resourceful, and willing to lie to protect himself. He hides the gourd, invents a nonexistent master to explain his valuable crops, disguises himself for trade, and takes long detours to avoid pursuit. His caution does not prevent decisive action when cornered; repeated provocation finally drives him to fight Li Yibo 5 19 25 34 43.

He remembers kindness and remains loyal to people who helped him before his rise. He reassures Liu Xianzong that their friendship has not changed, gives him substantial cultivation resources, and later arranges for servants to handle his fieldwork. Although pragmatic about survival, Lin Mo explicitly refuses to advance by sacrificing other people’s lives 16 41 46.

Abilities & Skills

Evergreen Art

A wood-element cultivation method acquired in exchange for mutated Fire Spirit Fruit 22.

  • Refines spiritual energy into a sustained, continuous flow and sharpens perception of wood spirits 22.
  • Allows the practitioner to command nearby wood spirits against enemies 22.
  • Suits Spirit Plant Farmers; Lin Mo’s five-element roots allow him to practice it despite his poor initial aptitude 22.

Turtle Breath Art

An aura-concealment technique used to make his growth and movements less conspicuous 21 22.

  • Combined with his disguise, makes his exact cultivation difficult for ordinary Qi Refining cultivators to determine 33.
  • Later becomes sufficiently ingrained that his aura remains elusive without deliberate activation 42.
  • At that point, cultivators below the third level cannot gauge his strength, while even a Foundation Establishment outer elder would need to probe him deliberately 42.

Enhanced Physique and Body Tempering

Repeated consumption of gourd-treated spring water and spirit crops strengthens his body, senses, and reflexes 19 26 41.

  • At the middle first layer, his physical strength rivals that of an ordinary second-layer cultivator; he can walk over a hundred li without tiring 26.
  • Enhanced reactions allow him to evade Li Yibo’s flame attack before he has learned spells 19.
  • Bathing with ten drops of spirit spring water expels gray-black impurities and produces a strengthening current flowing opposite to spiritual qi 49.
  • He estimates that his first tempering bath improves his already enhanced body by at least five percent 50.

Eight Extremes Martial Art

A mortal martial art learned from another servant disciple 19.

  • Practiced the Heart-Toppling Elbow continuously for three days and nights, bringing it to the threshold of true proficiency 19.
  • Used the elbow strike to break Li Yibo’s vine shield and leave him unable to rise 19.
  • Defeated Li Yibo without spells, allowing him to argue that his retaliation had not violated the sect’s spell-fighting prohibition 19.

Spirit Plant Cultivation

Lin Mo combines farming experience with the Treasure Gourd’s water to cultivate unusually productive spirit crops 3 14.

  • Grows Fire Spirit Fruit, Golden Coin Grass, spirit rice, and spirit wheat 35 39.
  • Produces mutated Fire Spirit Fruit and Golden Coin Grass; the former yields mystic-tier fruits 19 36.
  • Restores the Ghost-Crying Field despite its nutrient-draining aura 38 39.
  • Rapid harvesting exhausts ordinary soil, requiring replenishing formations or further spirit spring water 14 15 18.

Formation Crafting

Studies Cloud Crane’s Basic Formation Diagram Guide and finds the subject more approachable than expected 31 32.

  • Engraves the Maze-Woven Golden Lock Formation using 280 formation lines; the formation is rated at most upper ninth grade 34.
  • Establishes the Empty-Eye Formation to obstruct outside views of his courtyard 43.
  • At the middle first layer, lacks the spiritual sense needed to nurture a Formation Disc further 34.

Minor Techniques

  • Fireball Art: Gains an initial grasp alongside the Turtle Breath Art 22.
  • Mind-Calming Incense making: Retains a servant-disciple craft using common sect grass and soil to make sleep-aiding incense 34.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Treasure Gourd / Little Gourd — Emerald-green spiritual treasure with star-like lights within its flesh. Infuses ordinary water and spirit liquid with a mysterious power that supports cultivation, physical improvement, and plant growth 2 5 14.
    • Infusion reaches its maximum effect after approximately twenty-four hours; removed spirit spring water loses its spiritual energy after roughly two hours 5.
    • Excessive consumption can overwhelm Lin Mo’s body and dantian 2 7.
    • Can receive Du Li and nurture his soul; Lin Mo has not fully understood its functions 48.
  • Storage Bags — Holds four by Chapter 41. The bag from Senior Brother Du has an interior about five meters across; the other three are about one meter across 41.
  • Outer Sect Identity Token — Establishes his disciple status and interfaces with sect formations and mission registration 9 10 23.
  • Basic Formation Diagram Guide — Handwritten gift from Cloud Crane High Person; both a study resource and evidence of their connection 29 36.
  • Venomous Thorn Bee — Spirit insect supplied by Du’s junior fellow disciple to help prevent pursuit. Investigates the Ghost-Crying Field’s eerie aura, then falls asleep; the merchant later believes it is nearing advancement 33 39 43.
  • Wound-Repair Pill — High-grade yellow-tier healing pill purchased for self-protection and used to save Cloud Crane 24 27.
  • Hundred-Mile Talisman — Used to carry Cloud Crane rapidly back to the sect; its activation causes backlash 27 28.
  • Vajra Talisman — Protective talisman given by Liu Xianzong. Its golden light resembles that of Lin Mo’s Golden-Light Wheat, though the wheat’s ability to ward off evil is initially only his hypothesis 41.

Relationships

  • Lin Xiaohe — Younger sister and childhood confidante. Sees through his cheerful account of sect life and later moves into his courtyard under special permission 1 29 31.
  • Parents — Farmers whose comfort and safety motivate him. He secretly returns their three taels of silver and repeatedly leaves them diluted spirit spring water 3 29 30.

  • Senior Brother Du and his junior fellow disciple — Penglai Commerce Association merchants who purchase his crops. Du supplies cultivation resources and methods; his junior offers better terms for exclusive trade and gives him the bee 14 21 24 33.
  • Du Li — Resentful ghost bound to Lin Mo as his subordinate through the Treasure Gourd. Awakens with strength approximately equivalent to the ninth layer of Qi Refining 46 48.
  • Li Yibo — Repeated tormentor defeated by Lin Mo in close combat. Later has his cultivation stripped and is expelled from the sect 4 19 22.
  • Gou Fengying and Xun Bin — Antagonists seeking control of his spirit-plant cultivation. Retaliate against his refusal with the Ghost-Crying Field assignment and an investigation of his village 35 36 47.
