Background / History
Foundation and Early Alliances
The Azure Cloud Patriarch founded the sect around the Ancient Sword Cultivator Ruins. Over several centuries, these ruins became the Azure Cloud Sword Mound, while successive patriarchs refined a defensive formation derived from its lingering sword qi 98.
The sect shared a three-way regional balance with the Sword Sect and Dragon Hall. Together, the three great orthodox powers led an alliance against evil cultivators and nearly eradicated the Tai Sui Gate several decades before its resurgence. By the time the enemy returned, the old Demon-Slaying Alliance had become largely nominal, and some smaller allied sects had lost their lineages 16 68.
Lin Mo and the Spirit Plant Courtyard
Lin Mo spent his first three years as a servant disciple, performing menial work without becoming a true cultivator. His eventual entry into the outer sect did not erase the stigma attached to his former duties 1 2 9.
His unusually vigorous spirit plants attracted Wang Qiuru’s attention and were attributed to a possible special physique. He received benefits comparable to those of inner sect disciples, while his cultivation work became increasingly important to the sect’s prospects 20 21 51.
At the Spirit Plant Grand Competition, Lin Mo’s Purple-Patterned Rice Plant produced nearly ripe grain heads in three days. His victory secured rewards and promotion to the Inner Sect, demonstrating the sect’s spirit-plant expertise before its orthodox rivals 68 78.
Infiltration and the Assault on Sect Master Peak
The Tai Sui Gate infiltrated the sect through Gou Fengying and an unknown number of other agents. Gou Fengying ordered Xun Bin to spread a heart-rot gu across Spirit Plant Peak, ruining every spirit field except the Ghost-Crying Field overnight 51.
Cloud Crane High Person’s attempt to form a Golden Core prompted Han Kang to recall the inner sect elders and organize protection. The attempt instead became the setting for a major Tai Sui Gate assault. Formation Hall master Feng Tu betrayed the sect, and the destruction of the formation disc prevented the defensive formation from shielding Cloud Crane against his final tribulation lightning 100 102 103 108.
The battle destroyed the Sect Master’s Main Hall and left Azure Cloud Plaza as a deep pit. Two inner sect elders died, Han Kang suffered minor injuries, and Cloud Crane failed his tribulation and died. The attackers suffered heavier losses, but Zhu Ang escaped 108.
Internal Reform and Wider Influence
After representatives of the Eight Great Households threatened the sect, Han Kang ordered its protective formation to operate continuously. He also broke centuries of precedent by selecting Inner Sect elders from among the Outer Elders 125 126 127.
Yuan Jingtu, Cui Zhong, Tie Fa, and Chang Huaigu entered the Inner Sect leadership. Wang Qiuru and several stewards became Outer Elders despite not having reached Foundation Establishment—the first such appointments since the sect’s founding. Yuan Jingtu and Cui Zhong credited Lin Mo with changing Han Kang’s attitude toward Spirit Plant Peak 129.
Lin Mo’s dealings with the Eight Great Households transformed their earlier hostility into friendship. Their formal agreement promised equal relations and explicitly ruled out annexing White Jade Domain 169.
Leadership Succession and Displacement
During his life-threatening decline, Han Kang asked Lin Mo to support Bai Qing and Jin Zun and protect the sect’s future. Han Kang subsequently formed a Nascent Soul, survived the breakthrough, and later became Grand Supreme Elder. Bai Qing succeeded him as Sect Master 199 201 299.
The Tai Sui Gate High Priest and a Mysterious Demon later attacked the Eastern Isles, forcing the sect to retreat into the Deep Sea Stone Formation. Senior Cao stayed behind to cover the withdrawal, leaving his fate uncertain in the initial report 348.
Although the mountain headquarters was destroyed, practically the entire sect survived evacuation. Hai Dafu provided a secluded cluster of stone houses for its members, while Han Kang and Luan Xiuping continued cultivating with revenge for the destruction still in mind 382 383.
Organization and Governance
Leadership
| Position | Holder | Responsibilities or Standing |
|---|---|---|
| Sect Master | Bai Qing | Succeeds Han Kang and manages sect affairs with assistance from the elders and guest elders 299. |
| Grand Supreme Elder | Han Kang | Former Sect Master; largely withdraws from daily administration after stabilizing his Nascent Soul cultivation 299 304. |
| Supreme Elder | Lin Mo | Formerly identified as Chief Elder; becomes the central source of the sect’s wider prestige and diplomatic influence 255 286 300 304. |
| Chief Guest Elder | Luan Xiuping | Nascent Soul cultivator who also exchanges cultivation insights with the Foundation Establishment elders 217 300 383. |
| Grand Elder / War Hall Master | Ao Hong | Temporarily commands the protective formation during Han Kang’s absence; the War Hall master’s standing is second only to the Sect Master in the earlier hierarchy 80 152. |
Membership and Advancement
- Servant disciples are not considered full disciples until they become true cultivators. Their work includes cleaning, sweeping, and emptying chamber pots 2.
- Aptitude and backing affect admission. Exceptional recruits may skip servant service, while wealthy applicants can bribe overseers or examination officials 2.
- Outer disciples perform production and logistical duties and must satisfy the annual Sect Examination 7 9 10.
- Inner disciples generally focus on cultivation and combat, including dangerous territorial fighting along the sect’s borders 7.
- Battlefield service can also draw outer and servant disciples seeking contribution points; successful participants may rise directly into the Inner Sect 7.
- Inner and Outer Elder status traditionally depends on spiritual-root quality and future potential, not cultivation realm alone. Foundation Establishment elders considered unlikely to reach Golden Core remain outside the Inner Sect 73.
- Clan kin are relatives or friends brought to the mountain by disciples. Those with spiritual roots may join the sect, but non-disciple relatives face movement restrictions 32 139.
Rules and Internal Tensions
- Fighting between outer disciples can result in contribution-point deductions or confinement on the potentially lethal Seclusion Cliff 10.
- Respecting teachers and honoring the Dao is an explicit sect rule 80.
- Combat specialists receive greater standing than production specialists. Lü Di, despite being an elder, lacks the authority and combat strength to confront elite War Hall disciple Ding Yan confidently 73 80.
- Inner Sect promotion does not guarantee favorable treatment: Lin Mo is assigned servant work through the Inner Sect Service Hall and ordered into the fire-poisoned Heaven-Burning Valley 86.
- The sect’s grounds normally protect disciples from open attacks, but that security does not prevent bullying, political obstruction, or covert infiltration 9 18 51 80.

Resources and Defensive Capabilities
Azure Cloud Primordial Defense Formation
The sect’s principal defensive formation originates from the sword qi of the Azure Cloud Sword Mound and has been refined by generations of patriarchs 98.
- Its grade lies between the peak of the eighth grade and the beginning of the seventh 97.
- It can withstand Golden Core cultivators but offers little protection against Nascent Soul experts 97.
- Elders below the seventh layer of Foundation Establishment struggle to control it; several may need to cooperate to unleash its full power 98.
- Cloud Crane’s attempts to diagnose its flaws consume both Divine Sense and lifespan 98.
- Its disc is destroyed during the assault surrounding Cloud Crane’s tribulation, but the formation is operational again when the Eight Great Households confront the sect 102 125 126.
- Subduing the underground Ancient Sword does not diminish its defensive power 147.
Spirit Plants and Alchemy
- Spirit-plant production supports both everyday meals and the sect’s pill supply, making it a foundation of overall growth 68.
- Lin Mo’s competition performance raises the possibility of spirit fields comparable to those of major second-tier sects 78.
- The Cinnabar-and-Verdant Spirit Field, jointly established with Pill King City, produces more than thirty varieties of seventh-grade spirit plants and over a dozen medicinal ingredients in its first bumper harvest 216.
- Each harvested variety exceeds ten thousand jin. The sect retains its share to supply Pill Pavilion elders and elite disciples with refining ingredients 216.
