|---|---|---|
| Third layer of Qi Refining | 7 | First confirmed cultivation level, not an on-page breakthrough. His poor spiritual root and contribution duties keep him stalled at this level through Chapter 46 46. |
- Original ceiling: The fifth level of Qi Refining is described as his lifetime limit before Lin Mo’s later assistance 21.
- Improved prospects: Lin Mo supplies spirit stones, secretly shares Spirit Spring Water, and removes the burden of contribution duties. The narration suggests Foundation Establishment may consequently be attainable, but no breakthrough for Liu is recorded in these passages 46 49.
Background / History
Farming Origins and Sect Life
Liu Xianzong comes from a farming family and rises through the Azure Cloud Sect’s servant-disciple ranks. By the time Lin Mo asks him about cultivation methods, he has spent five years as an outer disciple, acquiring only one Yellow Tier Mid Grade method and two low-grade spell techniques 6 11 15.
His farming duties leave little time for cultivation. He receives six spirit stones per month plus a three-stone farming subsidy, and must surrender one hundred spirit fruits annually. In the assessment year shown, he barely completes that quota during the final half-month before the deadline 7.
Guiding Lin Mo
Liu takes Lin Mo on as a field helper after his previous assistant, Erhu, becomes an outer disciple. He teaches watering and plant care while reminding Lin Mo not to neglect cultivation before the sect assessment 5.
He notices the slight recovery of a failing plant but accepts Lin Mo’s explanation that he merely followed ordinary care instructions. Recognizing the difficulties faced by disciples promoted from servant work, Liu recommends spirit farming as a way to meet the sect’s contribution requirements 6.
When Lin Mo becomes an outer disciple with a neighboring field, Liu helps complete the handover procedures and cooks a celebratory meal. He later drives away Li Yibo’s group for mocking Lin Mo and introduces him to the Black Market, explaining its trading practices and warning him about swindlers 10 11.
Liu repeatedly notices Lin Mo’s unusually fast-growing crops. He initially treats a special physique as a possibility, then raises the idea directly with Steward Wang Qiuru when she inspects Lin Mo’s field 13 20.
Qin Sang Sang and the Tai Sui Gate
During a shortage of servant disciples, Steward Cui assigns the frail Qin Sang Sang to Liu’s field. Liu reluctantly accepts her and initially requires her to finish her daily work before eating or sleeping. When she works herself into a faint, however, he keeps her and advises her to pace herself 12 14.
Information from Erhu alerts Liu to the Tai Sui Gate’s resurgence. He explains its practice of refining people with spiritual roots into Tai Sui Pills, warns Lin Mo against evil cultivation, and urges him not to leave the mountain. He also cautions that the servant shortage may involve more than this threat alone 16.
Before Lin Mo’s mission to White Jade Ravine, Liu transfers Qin Sang Sang to his care and proposes taking the servant assigned by Steward Wang as his replacement. He mistakenly assumes Lin Mo’s request has romantic or sexual motives and offers teasing warnings about overindulgence 23 24.
Loyalty at the Ghost-Crying Field
Liu becomes noticeably reserved after Lin Mo’s rise in status, but relaxes when Lin Mo insists their friendship has not changed. Concerned about the Ghost-Crying Field, he brings a Vajra Talisman obtained specifically for Lin Mo. In return, Lin Mo gives him a Storage Bag containing at least one hundred spirit stones—far more than the thirty-odd stones Liu has saved over his years in the outer sect 41.
Liu subsequently guards the field overnight, fearing interference from Elder Gou Fengying. Xun Bin knocks him unconscious with an attack on his sea of consciousness and uses a talisman-created figure to wither the spirit wheat. Upon waking, Liu rushes to warn Lin Mo and blames himself for failing to protect the crops 44 46.
After Liu recovers, Lin Mo tells him to leave fieldwork to servant disciples and concentrate on cultivation without worrying about contribution points. Liu accepts, resolving to become strong enough to help Lin Mo more effectively 46.
Over the following three months, Liu joins the courtyard’s secret meals of spirit wheat and rice, cultivates harder, and refrains from questioning Lin Mo’s unexplained advantages. He also helps guard the courtyard during Lin Mo’s secluded cultivation 49 50.
Appearance
Liu is introduced as a young man of average build and ordinary appearance 5.
- Wears a small pouch at his waist from which he retrieves spirit plant seeds 6.
- Becomes pale, sweaty, and visibly exhausted after supplying spiritual energy to his field’s formation 7.
Personality
Liu is gentle and considerate toward servant disciples, understanding their position because he once held it himself. His treatment of Qin Sang Sang shows that his strict instructions do not override compassion: he recognizes her effort and does not punish her for collapsing 5 6 14.
His good nature has limits. He unleashes a blistering verbal attack when Li Yibo mocks Lin Mo, crediting his vocabulary to the village women he heard while growing up. He later openly celebrates Li Yibo’s expulsion 11 22.
Liu envies Lin Mo’s opportunities without turning against him. He remains protective, risks guarding the Ghost-Crying Field, and respects the secrecy surrounding Lin Mo’s courtyard and resources 13 21 44 46 49.
