Background / History
Sect Leadership and the Spirit Plant Grand Competition
Han Kang led the Azure Cloud Sect while it was the strongest orthodox sect within a thousand miles, though only a third-tier sect on the broader scale of Cloud Province. During this period, he was its only Golden Core cultivator 28 78 92 109.
He jointly supervised the Spirit Plant Grand Competition with Long Shengye and Miao Yun, collecting competitors’ Storage Bags before the contest began. When Shen Chengqi reached Foundation Establishment during the competition, Han Kang ruled that the breakthrough did not disqualify him. He later agreed to let the remaining two days run their course after Lin Mo won the Purple-Patterned Rice Plant round 71 73 77.
By the competition, Han Kang believed Lin Mo possessed a mysterious wood-element special physique with exceptional vitality and unusual benefits for spirit-plant cultivation 113.
Cloud Crane’s Tribulation and the Tai Sui Gate Attack
When Cloud Crane High Person regained enough vitality to attempt Golden Core formation, Han Kang ordered all inner sect elders to remain at the sect and protect him. He intended to use the Azure Cloud Primordial Defense Formation to reduce the tribulation’s power 100 103.
Formation Hall Master Feng Tu instead sabotaged the formation and joined Zhu Ang’s attack. Han Kang revealed that he had deliberately played along with Zhu Ang’s attempt to draw defenders away, hoping to lure the enemy into the open. Nevertheless, Zhu Ang’s seventh-layer cultivation and coordinated assault left Han Kang’s staff badly damaged, while Cloud Crane suffered fatal injuries 103 108.
Han Kang offered Cloud Crane a Heaven-Returning Pill and promised to fulfill his remaining wishes. Cloud Crane refused the pill and entrusted his honorary disciple, Lin Mo, to Han Kang. Afterward, Han Kang regretted the cold reception he had given Cloud Crane when the latter joined the sect 108 109.
Lin Mo’s recovery of Formation Disc fragments and two elders’ bodies offset his unauthorized entry into the Sword Tomb. For contributing Cloud Crane’s formation teachings, Han Kang granted him unrestricted Scripture Pavilion access and a low-grade Foundation Establishment Pill, despite estimating his breakthrough chances at below ten percent 109.
Protecting Lin Mo and Discovering the Ancient Sword
When the Eight Great Households demanded Lin Mo’s pill-enhancement method, Han Kang refused to surrender him. He first threatened retaliation against their younger generations if they destroyed the Azure Cloud Sect, then threatened to take Lin Mo to their rival, Longevity Valley. Wu Pingdao and his companions withdrew 125 126.
After witnessing Lin Mo remove pill toxins and increase a pill’s grade, Han Kang recognized the method’s value to his own cultivation. He promised compensation for future assistance, ordered secrecy, restricted Lin Mo’s unsupervised departures, and relieved him of spirit-field duties so he could focus on advancing 126 127.
His changing attitude toward Spirit Plant Peak also opened advancement opportunities for its personnel. He promoted Yuan Jingtu, Cui Zhong, Tie Fa, and Chang Huaigu to Inner Sect Elders, while Wang Qiuru and several stewards became Outer Elders 129.
During Lin Mo’s Foundation Establishment tribulation, Han Kang evacuated disciples from Sect Master Peak and authorized Lin Mo to use the sect-protecting formation. Afterward, he followed the Spirit-Devouring Vine’s roots underground by smashing open a deep fissure. He and Lin Mo discovered a Blood Formation of 8,100 pillars surrounding an Ancient Sword 130 132 133.
Han Kang initially shielded Lin Mo from the sword, then allowed him to approach after learning it wished to acknowledge him as master. Following the discovery, he appointed Lin Mo the sixteenth Inner Sect Elder and Service Hall Master, concealed the tribulation and fissure from outsiders, and sent him to the Astrology Pavilion for divination 133 134 135.
Allied Sects and Expanding Threats
Han Kang accompanied Lin Mo and Lin Xiaohe to the Sword Sect so Miao Yun could examine Xiaohe’s unusual power. When the Sword Sect’s declining earth vein qi became apparent, he urged Lin Mo to help resolve its underground calamity and supplied a protective pill. He also offered 2,000 drops of mid-grade spirit liquid as a separate trade rather than a free gift 141 142 143 145.
Reports connecting the Tai Sui Gate to Longevity Valley, the Penglai Commerce Association, and possibly the Sword Sect’s Ninth Elder alarmed him. He kept the information from ordinary disciples and asked Lin Mo to investigate the Commerce Association contact in the Black Market. He postponed Lin Mo’s suggestion of pretending to join the Tai Sui Gate 152 153.
Han Kang subsequently offered to accompany Lin Mo into negotiations with the Eight Great Households, believing he could at least safeguard him if cooperation failed. Later, he informed Lin Mo that six Divine Firmament Sect elders were losing their cultivation, prompting Lin Mo’s investigation of another suspected soul-devouring formation 156 173.
Nascent Soul Crisis and Recovery
Pressure from the Eight Great Households’ expanding influence drove Han Kang to attempt Nascent Soul formation at the ninth layer of Golden Core rather than wait for perfection. He became Grand Supreme Elder and appointed his disciple Bai Qing as Sect Master, but his core shattered without immediately producing a Nascent Soul 197.
As his condition deteriorated, Han Kang asked Lin Mo to support Bai Qing, help Jin Zun become chief elder, and eventually succeed him as the sect’s protector. Lin Mo repeatedly supplied spirit spring water, keeping him alive even as its restorative effect fell behind his loss of vitality 198 199.
This prolonged struggle between life and death unexpectedly enabled Nascent Soul formation. Lin Mo then lent him the White Sun Tower, Nether Crow Feather Robe, and Spirit-Devouring Vine to withstand the ensuing tribulation 200 201.
After succeeding, Han Kang received Qiongsongzi and discussed a lasting alliance with the Divine Firmament Sect. He requested guidance on his new realm and ordered formal notices announcing the Azure Cloud Sect’s advancement throughout the White Jade Domain 201 202.
Later Activities
After consolidating his first-layer Nascent Soul cultivation, Han Kang oversaw Lin Mo’s Golden Core tribulation and undertook to block its lingering force from affecting the sect 238.
By the Deep Sea reunion, the Azure Cloud Sect’s original grounds had been destroyed. Han Kang and Luan Xiuping continued cultivating tirelessly despite the prestige Lin Mo brought their sect, and neither had forgotten the vengeance owed for that destruction 383.
Appearance
- After Nascent Soul consolidation: His body radiates a faint golden glow, and his Metal Element escape produces golden-yellow flight light 201 238.
- During the failed core-shattering attempt: He appears with disheveled hair, golden mist around his body, and a wildly fluctuating aura 198.
- Near death: His hair turns completely white, his skin becomes deeply wrinkled and develops dark-brown spots, and his body emits dense decay and death qi. These features describe his crisis rather than an established permanent appearance 199.
- Nascent Soul: A plump, fist-sized infant-like manifestation appears above his head after the tribulation 201.
Personality
Han Kang is pragmatic about talent and sect resources. He initially treats the aging Cloud Crane coolly, then welcomes the prospect of his becoming a Golden Core formation grandmaster. His protection of Lin Mo likewise combines responsibility toward a sect member with recognition of the enormous value of Lin Mo’s abilities 100 109 126 127.
He is willing to face stronger opponents rather than allow outsiders to dictate the sect’s affairs. Against Wu Pingdao, he openly admits his inferior strength but threatens consequences the Eight Great Households cannot accept. Toward the Tai Sui Gate, his hostility becomes uncompromising after the attack on the sect 113 125 126.
Despite his sternness, he honors obligations and rewards service. He promises to fulfill Cloud Crane’s final wishes, supports Lin Mo bringing his parents into the sect, and plans his succession around Bai Qing’s kindness and Jin Zun’s suitability for enforcing discipline. Near death, his central concern is preserving the sect’s six-hundred-year legacy 108 135 199.

- Nether Crow Feather Robe — Borrowed from Lin Mo. Protects him from the lightning and flames that penetrate the White Sun Tower’s defense 200 201.
- Spirit-Devouring Vine — Lin Mo’s spirit-plant treasure, supplied as another tribulation defense. It blocks the fourth bolt 200 201.
