|---|---|---|
| Third tier | 204 625 | His cultivation when Xu Qingtong recruited him, confirmed retrospectively. He could already perceive spatial rifts and investigate past events. |
| Middle fourth tier | 332 | His spatial sensitivity had improved considerably since Red Moon Island, allowing him to detect spatial fluctuations beneath a hill. |
| Fifth tier | 393 394 446 | Cultivated within a formation containing Immortal Realm aura, then swallowed two fifth-tier Demon Cores to complete his breakthrough. This advancement also enabled him to repair some spatial rifts. |
| Sixth tier | 453 454 | Broke through after eating Mandui Fruit and consuming two Demon Cores. Xu Qingtong stabilized the rampaging Spiritual Power that nearly caused his body to burst. His fur changed from white to pale gold. |
| Seventh tier / Transformation Stage | 603 608 612 625 | Received five sixth-tier Demon Cores and Earth Milk before his breakthrough. With a Transformation Pill and breakthrough elixirs supplied by Xu Qingtong, he survived a three-day Heavenly Tribulation and attained human form. |
Background / History
Xiao Bai grew up on Red Moon Island. His parents died of old age while he was still young, and he survived pursuing demon beasts by retreating into a refuge that only he could enter. His ability to see the island’s spatial rifts kept him from disappearing into the hazards that swallowed many other beasts 204.
Xu Qingtong recruited him through threats, persuasion from Xiao Qi and Xizi, and the temptation of fine wine. After accepting a master-servant contract, the White Yu received the name Xiao Bai. He initially communicated through Divine Thought rather than speech and became Xu Qingtong and Du Siwen’s guide through the island 204.
After forming his Golden Core and returning to the Human Realm, Xu Qingtong fulfilled his promise to release Xiao Bai and Xizi. Xiao Bai accepted his old Soul Blood so that Xu Qingtong would not violate his oath, then immediately offered a fresh drop to continue following him voluntarily. Xu Qingtong accepted their renewed commitment and promised to support their cultivation and eventual transformation 368.
Appearance
- Original beast form: A small, monkey-like White Yu with white fur 204 454 626.
- Sixth-tier beast form: Pale golden fur replaced his white coat during his breakthrough 454.
- Human form: A youthful face, white hair, and entirely white clothing. His expression combines a scholarly air with a trace of irreverence 612.
Personality
Xiao Bai is fond of fine wine and Mandui Fruit, frequently bargaining for more or protesting when Xu Qingtong teases him about withholding them. He agreed to test the Blood-Soul Restriction only after receiving assurances of safety and an offer of two jars of wine; once released, he immediately demanded payment 229 302 453.
He can be timid around unfamiliar dangers but boastful when confident in his abilities. A crowd frightened him when he was summoned to guide travelers across Red Moon Island, while his sixth-tier breakthrough prompted him to swagger before Xiao Qi and call himself her big brother—earning a thorough beating 314 454.
His attachment to Xu Qingtong outlasts their contractual relationship. He repeatedly chooses to remain beside him, asks to share his surname after taking human form, and becomes emotional when revisiting the island where they first met. As an uncle and martial uncle, he is initially embarrassed by his new seniority but generously shares his inherited spatial techniques 368 612 625 626.
Abilities & Skills
Spatial Perception
- Sees spatial rifts as visible black holes, even when human cultivators and other demon beasts cannot perceive them 204.
- Detects concealed spatial fluctuations and helps locate realm entrances 332 513.
- Judges whether passages are wide and stable enough to cross, including the danger of a closing passage casting travelers into spatial turbulence 367.
- Evaluates spatial nodes: he estimated that one would become passable within a year and recognized another’s imminent collapse 570 571.
Perception of the Past
- His Innate Divine Ability allows him to investigate past events. At his initial documented cultivation, its reach extended back five hundred years 204.
- Can passively sense that someone has visited a location without fully activating the ability. This exposed Huang Chengquan’s prior familiarity with a mountain path 218.
- Identifying a specific recent visitor required full activation. At that point, using the ability prevented him from using it again for one year 288.
Formation and Barrier Manipulation
- Finds weak points and alters their Spatial Power to open passages without destroying the entire formation 341.
- Can exploit a formation while it resists Xu Qingtong’s attacks. Even after reaching the fifth tier, he needed such assistance to escape the formation containing Immortal Realm aura 392 394.
- His sixth-tier strength allowed him to tear a five-foot-wide opening in the Lesser Heaven Realm’s barrier, more than three times the size of his earlier attempt 451 454.
- Could hold that exit open for three breaths with his innate ability; failure to cross in time risked spatial turbulence 456.
- Cannot bypass every barrier. Some Netherworld Junctions remained too difficult to open safely, and closing an Interface Node required power over the Heavenly Dao that he did not possess 583 640.
Spatial Rift Repair
- After reaching the fifth tier, could repair some of Red Moon Island’s black holes through direct spatial manipulation 446.
Spatial Prison
- An innate ability that restrains targets with invisible spatial shackles 617.
- Used alongside Xu Qingtong’s slowing techniques against a Netherworld commander and Tianji Zi 615 617.
- Belongs to his racial inheritance. Teaching it requires a secret technique that imprints it directly into another person’s sea of consciousness; it cannot be transmitted through a jade slip 626.
- Requires Spatial Power. He therefore also taught Xu Chengkang and Duoduo how to perceive and cultivate that power 627 629.
Heaven’s End at a Step
- Also called Shrinking Earth to an Inch, this spatial movement technique carries him dozens of li in a single step 640.
- Faster than Xu Qingtong’s Flying Heaven Wings at the time of its demonstration 640.
- Transported Xu Qingtong by carrying the Seven-Star Bracelet while Xu Qingtong remained inside it 640.
Spatial Instruction and Research
- Guided Xu Chengkang and Duoduo until both gained an initial grasp of Spatial Power and could restrain opponents with Spatial Prison 629.
- Took them to Red Moon Island to study its changing spatial conditions for over a month 688.
- Studied spatial fragments above the Nine Heavens with Xu Qingtong, then spent ten days analyzing their observations. His explanations resolved several of Xu Qingtong’s questions 691 692.
Weaknesses and Cultivation Requirements
- Demonic Qi corruption: Exposure reddened his eyes, made him irritable, and altered his temperament. Xu Qingtong restored him with the Pure-Heart Snow Lotus; Xiao Bai later avoided entering a demonic cave for fear of another exposure 341 513.
- Separate resource needs: Mandui Fruit improves his Spatial Power but does not increase his magic power. Demon Cores and other cultivation resources remain necessary for advancement 603.
- Limited resistance to high-altitude winds: Above the Nine Heavens, he required the Jade Exquisite’s Pagoda Phantom Shadow to withstand the destructive gang winds 691.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Mandui Fruit tree — Given to him by Xu Qingtong to support his spatial cultivation 603.
- Demon Cores and Earth Milk — Resources supplied for breakthroughs, including his preparation for form transformation 454 603.
- Transformation Pill and breakthrough elixirs — Provided before his Transformation Stage tribulation 608.
- Seven-Star Bracelet — Xu Qingtong’s treasure, frequently used as Xiao Bai’s shelter. Xiao Bai later carried it to transport Xu Qingtong with his spatial movement technique 341 640.
- Promised Supreme Grade Treasure — Xu Qingtong arranged for Duoduo to forge one for him; its completion is not shown in the supplied passages 626.
Relationships
- Xu Qingtong — Former master and acknowledged elder brother. Their master-servant relationship was dissolved after Xiao Bai took human form, but their Soul Blood connection remained useful for communication 612 626 640.
- Xiao Qi / Xu Jing Tong — Fellow spirit beast and later fellow younger sibling of Xu Qingtong. Xiao Bai calls her “Sister Xiao Qi” and often imitates her; his attempt to claim seniority after reaching the sixth tier ended in a beating 394 454 612.
- Xizi — Fellow contracted beast. Xizi copied Xiao Bai’s method of accepting freedom and then offering fresh Soul Blood, though the pair also tease one another 368 454.
- Du Siwen — Originally addressed as mistress of the household, later as sister-in-law. She intervenes when Xu Qingtong’s teasing leaves Xiao Bai anxious 453 626.
- Xu Chengkang — Acknowledged nephew and pupil. Xiao Bai taught him Spatial Prison and the fundamentals needed to wield Spatial Power 626 627 629.
- Duoduo — Martial niece and pupil. He offered her the same spatial instruction as Chengkang, while she agreed to forge his promised treasure 626 627 629.

Notable Quotes
“Master, I've taken back the previous drop, so you've fulfilled your promise! Now I'm giving you my Soul Blood anew. I want to follow you all my life!” 368
“Big Brother, you treat me as your brother, so we're family. I, Xu Yutong, have nothing to my name. It's only right that I give the child a technique to defend himself!” 626
Trivia
- Xu Qingtong chose Xiao Bai because he was a White Yu and still “innocent and ignorant” 204.
- Before settling on Xu Yutong, Xu Qingtong proposed Bai Yu. Xiao Bai specifically wanted the Xu surname, following Xiao Qi’s example 612.
- In Xu Yutong, yu represents the universe and space, while tong means sameness; Xu Qingtong described the name as conveying harmony throughout the universe 612.
- The “elder” role he assumes when teaching Chengkang and Duoduo is familial seniority as an uncle and martial uncle, rather than a stated sect appointment 626 627.
