Ch. 1Dead?

After Du Yu died in a traffic accident, Fan Xiaoguo and Xie Jin told him that he had been killed in place of Zhou Zhuangshi and might qualify for wrongful-death benefits. Du Yu chose reincarnation into a wealthy household and arrived at the underworld’s Ghost Gate, where he learned that he would likely never see the two officers again.

  • A runaway truck struck Du Yu’s bus, killing him while leaving everyone else unharmed.
  • Fan Xiaoguo and Xie Jin collected Du Yu and explained that Zhou Zhuangshi had been destined to die that day instead.
  • Xie Jin described the wrongful-death benefits, and Du Yu chose the option to reincarnate into a wealthy household.
  • The van carried Du Yu to the underworld’s Ghost Gate, where Fan Xiaoguo tried to give him a tour of its landmarks.
  • Du Yu asked whether he and the officers would meet again, then learned their names: Fan Xiaoguo and Xie Jin.

Ch. 2The Netherworld's Ghost Gate

After Cui Jue discovered that Du Yu stirred memories of the nineteenth year of Zhenguan, he judged Du Yu’s death unjust and offered to advance his reincarnation in exchange for help with a dangerous task. Xie Jin and Fan Xiaoguo delivered Du Yu to the ruined Netherworld Office at the Peak of No Return, while Xie Bi'an’s strange reaction suggested Du Yu was tied to the Grand Judge’s suspicions.

  • Xie Jin and Fan Xiaoguo brought Du Yu before a judge, but the red-robed official dismissed his death as accidental until Cui Jue arrived and struck him.
  • Cui Jue recognized an unexplained connection to Du Yu, recalled the nineteenth year of Zhenguan, and personally ruled on his case.
  • Cui Jue told Du Yu that reincarnation would take 726 years and offered to move him up the queue if he undertook a dangerous task; Du Yu agreed.
  • Cui Jue sent Xie Jin and Fan Xiaoguo to take Du Yu to a house at the Peak of No Return, and Xie Bi'an appeared after hearing Du Yu’s name.
  • Xie Bi'an reacted with excitement upon seeing Du Yu, then vanished after telling Xie Jin to deliver him safely to the Peak of No Return.
  • Xie Jin, Fan Xiaoguo, and Du Yu reached the ruined house, whose sign identified it as the Legend Management Bureau Netherworld Office.

Ch. 3Legend Management Bureau

Du Yu learned that the Legend Management Bureau needed him to enter a damaged legend and restore its story before its seal expired. He was sent into Yi Shoots Down Nine Suns with Sun Wukong and Zhuge Kongming’s souls, facing a seven-day deadline to save both the past and the present.

  • He Suoyi revealed that the Bureau had waited nine hundred years for Du Yu and explained how sick legends could alter the present world.
  • Dong Qianqiu told Du Yu that he was the remedy needed to repair a legend, and that he had to enter it before its seal expired.
  • Dong Qianqiu explained that Da Yi had missed the Immortal’s guidance and remained mortal, leaving him unable to shoot down the nine suns as the legend required.
  • Du Yu chose Sun Wukong and Zhuge Kongming as the two souls who could possess him for five minutes each.
  • The Bureau began Du Yu’s soul transfer, and he lost consciousness as he was sent into the legend.

Ch. 4Ten Suns Scorch the Heavens

Du Yu arrived in the era of Emperor Yao as Pang Meng and discovered that Da Yi was the man he had come to find, though Da Yi denied being able to shoot down the suns. After searching his gift pack, Du Yu overheard Da Yi and Heng'e discussing a secret Da Yi had kept hidden for years.

  • Du Yu woke in a village beneath ten suns and met Da Yi and the boy Youqiong, then introduced himself as Pang Meng.
  • Da Yi brought Pang Meng home, where Pang Meng met Da Yi's beautiful wife, Heng'e, and asked to find someone who could shoot down the suns.
  • Da Yi and Heng'e reacted nervously when Pang Meng said he sought a man named Yi who could shoot down nine suns, but Da Yi claimed he was an ordinary mortal.
  • Pang Meng examined his time-travel gift pack, finding two jars, legend accounts, and five basic talismans; he threw the talismans in frustration and one Eavesdropping Talisman stuck to the wall.
  • Pang Meng heard Da Yi and Heng'e say that Da Yi had kept something hidden for years and that they hoped nothing went wrong.

Ch. 5I Am an Immortal

Du Yu investigated the secret behind Da Yi’s past and used Dong Qianqiu’s help to prove himself an immortal to Da Yi and Heng'e. Da Yi revealed that Nine-Infant was the last monster, then gave Du Yu a phrase meant to identify his mysterious friend, but Dong Qianqiu supplied the wrong response and left Du Yu scrambling to explain.

  • Du Yu read different versions of the Hou Yi legend and learned that Heng'e’s flight to the moon was expected to follow Yi’s deeds.
  • Du Yu claimed to be an immortal and had Dong Qianqiu identify Heng'e’s embroidery, winning Da Yi and Heng'e’s trust.
  • Da Yi explained that he had killed Zaochi, Fengtun, and Dafeng, while Yayu and the Long Serpent had gone into hiding, leaving Nine-Infant as the only monster.
  • Da Yi gave Du Yu the phrase “To quell the chaos” to identify his mysterious friend, and the Bureau recognized that the friend was Zhan Qisheng, still inside the legend.
  • He Suoyi told Dong Qianqiu to give Du Yu a fabricated password, and Du Yu confidently answered, “To quell the chaos, one must eat one’s fill,” prompting Da Yi to correct him.

Ch. 6Zhan Qisheng

Du Yu investigated the changing details of the legend and learned that Zhan Qisheng had once given Da Yi a choice that kept him from becoming a half-immortal. After Da Yi revealed he had chosen a life with Heng'e over saving all living souls, Du Yu asked whether he now wanted to shoot down the suns.

  • Da Yi agreed to take Du Yu to face Nine-Infant the next day, while Du Yu noticed that the number of suns in the sky had changed from ten to nine.
  • Youqiong and Heng'e worried about Da Yi’s planned journey, but Da Yi prepared to leave with Du Yu and said he still had a way to protect himself.
  • Dong Qianqiu told Du Yu that Zhan Qisheng, the Legend Management Bureau’s first legend traveler, had betrayed the Bureau and might be involved in the story.
  • Du Yu listed the mysteries surrounding Da Yi, Heng'e, the suns, and Zhan Qisheng, then noticed that Da Yi had begun speaking unclearly.
  • Da Yi asked Du Yu to help bury Uncle Tan, whose entire household had died, and said the villagers’ deaths were his fault.
  • Da Yi revealed that he had once been offered a choice and had chosen to grow old with Heng'e; Du Yu concluded Zhan Qisheng had made the offer and asked Da Yi whether he wanted to shoot down the suns.

Ch. 7The Hidden Past

Du Yu asked Da Yi to shoot down the suns, but Da Yi hesitated because he feared losing Heng'e. As they traveled toward Nine-Infant, Da Yi revealed that he had once chosen an immortal artifact over a pill that would make him a half-immortal and require him to save all living beings; Du Yu and Da Yi were then warned that something enormous was following them.

  • Da Yi questioned whether shooting down the suns would cost him Heng'e, then left with Du Yu after they buried Uncle Tan and said goodbye to her.
  • Youqiong challenged Du Yu about taking Da Yi to fight Nine-Infant, and Du Yu claimed to be Da Yi's disciple; afterward, Youqiong asked the giant snake Little Ba to help protect Da Yi.
  • Da Yi told Du Yu that, as a child, he was abandoned in the mountains, where he rescued Heng'e and later met an immortal who foretold two possible fates for him.
  • Da Yi chose an immortal artifact over the Nine-Turn Primordial Spirit Pill after saving an old man from a bei, accepting that he would remain mortal and would not save all living beings.
  • Da Yi asked Du Yu whether choosing Heng'e over the people beneath heaven had been selfish, but Dong Qianqiu warned them that something enormous was following them.

Ch. 8Sun Wukong, aaaaaah!

Du Yu lost the jar holding Sun Wukong’s soul when Nine-Infant attacked, then joined Da Yi and the Cultivated Serpent in a desperate fight. He used Dong Qianqiu’s voice transmission to distract Nine-Infant, letting Da Yi shoot out another eye.

  • Da Yi and Du Yu reached the Aolai Kingdom, where Du Yu recognized Flower-Fruit Mountain as the home of Sun Wukong.
  • Nine-Infant ambushed them, smashed the jar containing Sun Wukong’s soul, and forced Du Yu and Da Yi to flee.
  • Nine-Infant wounded Da Yi, but Du Yu struck its eye with an arrow and carried Da Yi away.
  • The Cultivated Serpent appeared to protect Da Yi and battled Nine-Infant, but Nine-Infant badly injured it.
  • Du Yu healed Da Yi with a Rejuvenation Talisman and arranged for Dong Qianqiu to distract Nine-Infant with a voice transmission.
  • Da Yi shot out another of Nine-Infant’s eyes while it turned toward Dong Qianqiu’s voice.

Ch. 9Ba Mausoleum

Du Yu and Da Yi mourned the Cultivated Serpent, whom Da Yi recognized as Little Ba, and Du Yu changed the serpent’s resting place into Ba Mausoleum. After returning to the village, Du Yu comforted Youqiong and discussed his mission and loneliness with Dong Qianqiu, while Xie Bi'an began arranging a match for Fan Xiaoguo.

  • The Cultivated Serpent detonated its inner core to weaken Nine-Infant, sacrificing itself so Da Yi and Du Yu could survive.
  • Xie Jin and Fan Xiaoguo reported that Sun Wukong had no records in the underworld, then the staff found footage showing his soul entering a stone and beginning the legend of the Monkey King.
  • Da Yi and Du Yu built a tomb for the Cultivated Serpent, and Du Yu insisted that its name be changed to Ba Mausoleum, which appeared in the historical record when Dong Qianqiu checked.
  • Du Yu and Da Yi returned to the village, where Heng'e welcomed Da Yi and Du Yu told Youqiong that Little Ba had gone to a beautiful place called Ba Mausoleum.
  • Du Yu asked Dong Qianqiu to get coffee with him after his return, and Xie Bi'an teased her before offering to arrange a match for Fan Xiaoguo.

Ch. 10Three Brocade Pouches

Du Yu summoned Zhuge Kongming, who gave him three brocade pouches and pointed him toward the Queen Mother of the West as the key to the mystery of the extra suns. Du Yu teleported to the Summit of Kunlun and gained an audience with her, but the figure he encountered left him stunned.

  • Du Yu swallowed Zhuge Kongming's soul, and Kongming appeared outside his body to hear about Da Yi and the nine suns.
  • Kongming told Du Yu to investigate why the extra suns had appeared and gave him three brocade pouches before his soul faded.
  • Du Yu realized the Queen Mother of the West had been delighted when Da Yi shot down the suns, then opened the first pouch and decided to confront her.
  • Du Yu used a Teleportation Talisman to reach the Summit of Kunlun and told a guard that he had found the person they were searching for.
  • The guard brought Du Yu before the Queen Mother of the West, and Du Yu was stunned when he saw the seated figure.

Ch. 11Petting the Queen Mother

Du Yu learned that the Queen Mother of the West had accidentally released nine Samadhi True Fire Pearls, creating the suns, and used Mr. Kongming’s clues to identify a missing treasure tied to Da Yi. He left to verify his theory, while the Queen Mother of the West prepared to give Da Yi the Elixir of Immortality and revealed she had only one and a half pills left.

  • Du Yu met the tiger-bodied Queen Mother of the West and learned she had released nine fireballs from the Nine-Treasure Glazed Lamp, which became the nine suns.
  • The Queen Mother of the West explained that she sought the Heavenly Worthy of the Way and Its Virtue, the Supreme Elder Lord, because he alone could overcome Samadhi True Fire.
  • Du Yu read Mr. Kongming’s note and, with Dong Qianqiu, connected Da Yi’s Purple-Gold Red Gourd to the Supreme Elder Lord and concluded that Da Yi might hold a crucial object.
  • Du Yu told the Queen Mother of the West that Da Yi would shoot down the suns and asked her to give him two pills of the Elixir of Immortality afterward.
  • Du Yu departed with a Teleportation Talisman, and the Queen Mother of the West discovered that only one and a half pills of the Elixir of Immortality remained.

Ch. 12Shooting Down Nine Suns

Du Yu used Da Yi’s Plantain Fan to extinguish nine suns, but the effort badly injured him. After the Queen Mother of the West arrived and healed his hands, Du Yu woke and recognized her as “Big Cat.”

  • Du Yu realized Da Yi’s hidden immortal treasure was the Plantain Fan and told him how they would use it to shoot down the suns.
  • With Du Yu secretly wielding the fan while Da Yi pretended to shoot his bow, they extinguished eight suns, leaving two; Du Yu’s hands and arms were severely injured.
  • Da Yi took over swinging the fan and extinguished another sun, while Du Yu warned the last sun not to threaten the people again before collapsing unconscious.
  • Inspired by Da Yi, Youqiong decided to call himself Hou Yi and dreamed of founding the Youqiong Kingdom in honor of the legend.
  • The Queen Mother of the West descended, healed Du Yu’s bleeding hands, and watched as he regained consciousness and called her “Big Cat.”

Ch. 13Unexpected Turn

Du Yu learned that Chang'e Flying to the Moon had to happen to prevent catastrophic consequences in the present, and Dong Qianqiu told him to make Heng'e take the Elixir of Immortality. Torn between the fate of countless people and Da Yi and Heng'e's happiness, Du Yu followed Mr. Kongming's advice and confronted Heng'e for the elixir.

  • The Queen Mother of the West rewarded Da Yi with a box containing one whole Elixir of Immortality and half a pill, and Du Yu persuaded Da Yi to accept it.
  • After the villagers celebrated Da Yi, Dong Qianqiu revealed that Chang'e Flying to the Moon had failed to occur and that its failure would cause twenty-one million Supreme Pivots to appear in the present day.
  • Dong Qianqiu told Du Yu that Heng'e had to swallow the elixir to preserve the events leading to Journey to the West, leaving Du Yu distressed over separating Heng'e and Da Yi.
  • Du Yu opened Mr. Kongming's third brocade pouch and read, "Keep all living souls in your heart," while Dong Qianqiu and He Suoyi discussed whether he could become a full-fledged Operator.
  • Da Yi left to hunt and asked Youqiong to look after Du Yu and Heng'e; Youqiong announced that he had renamed himself Hou Yi.
  • After nightfall, Du Yu took a skinning knife to Heng'e's room and demanded the Elixir of Immortality, but Heng'e calmly offered to fetch it for him.

Ch. 14The Moon Rises Bright

Du Yu forced Heng'e to choose whether to ascend, and she swallowed the Immortal Elixir to save lives while asking him to help Da Yi reunite with her. After Heng'e became Fairy Chang'e, Da Yi begged the Queen Mother of the West for another half pill and chose to become a white rabbit so he could join her on the moon.

  • Du Yu confronted Heng'e with a dagger and urged her to swallow the whole Immortal Elixir, explaining that her ascent could save countless lives.
  • Heng'e accepted Du Yu's account, swallowed the pill, and asked him to help Da Yi meet her again before ascending through the roof as Youqiong arrived.
  • Youqiong accused Du Yu of trying to steal the elixir and stabbed him, while Du Yu fled the village wounded.
  • Da Yi rejected the rumors about Heng'e and Pang Meng, summoned the Queen Mother of the West, and begged for another half pill to join his wife.
  • The Queen Mother of the West transformed Da Yi into a white rabbit, and Heng'e welcomed him in the Moon Palace without recognizing him as her husband.

Ch. 15Return

After Zhan Qisheng separated Du Yu from the Legend Management Bureau, he confronted him over Heng'e’s fate and tried to recruit him, but Du Yu defended his choices and collapsed from his wound. Back at the bureau, the legend reached its first 100% completion rate as Emperor Yao took Hou Yi away, and staff reported that Du Yu’s soul had returned.

  • Dong Qianqiu cared for Du Yu’s wounded body while Xie Bi'an and Fan Wujiao confirmed Du Yu was alive and discussed recruiting him.
  • Zhan Qisheng revealed himself to Du Yu, severed his connection to the bureau, and demanded answers about Heng'e’s ascension.
  • Du Yu argued that he had been forced to follow the legend and rejected Zhan Qisheng’s offer of freedom in the ancient era.
  • Du Yu’s wound reopened, and he lost consciousness as Zhan Qisheng watched him.
  • Dong Qianqiu restarted the recall procedure after Du Yu’s feed returned, while the bureau discovered the legend’s completion rate was still rising.

Ch. 16Amoxicillin

After recovering from his mission, Du Yu rejected the underworld’s lavish gifts and kept only Fan Xiaoguo’s box of amoxicillin, accidentally winning her ancestor’s approval. He left the Bureau with Dong Qianqiu for a trip to Fengdu City, accepting a ride from Fan Xiaoguo.

  • The underworld’s leaders and other powerful figures sent miraculous medicines to Du Yu while he was unconscious, and Fan Xiaoguo reluctantly contributed a box of amoxicillin.
  • Du Yu woke after thirteen days, learned that his injuries were real, and discovered Dong Qianqiu had stayed by his bedside to care for him.
  • Chief Judge Cui Jue told Du Yu that his mission success could not shorten his seven-hundred-year wait to reincarnate and explained that accepting a gift would mean accepting its sender’s favor.
  • Du Yu returned the miraculous medicines and kept only the amoxicillin, prompting Fan Wujiao and Xie Bi'an to praise Fan Xiaoguo for making a connection with him.
  • Dong Qianqiu tutored Du Yu about immortals, but he persuaded her to leave the Bureau with him for coffee instead.
  • Du Yu and Dong Qianqiu set out for Fengdu City, and Fan Xiaoguo offered them a ride in her van.

Ch. 17Zhongli Chun

Du Yu received the legendary Eight Directions Ghost Record and explored the Underworld with Dong Qianqiu, who explained the Legend Management Bureau’s decline. Their visit to a café turned violent when a formidable woman named Zhongli Chun attacked a customer and confronted a Netherworld officer, leaving Dong Qianqiu to stop her punch.

  • Fan Xiaoguo delivered Du Yu the Eight Directions Ghost Record, a powerful cultivation method once used by Lady Houtu.
  • Dong Qianqiu explained that the Record let its owner invite eight ghosts to guard eight directions and borrow their powers, and Du Yu claimed it by writing his name and birth details.
  • Du Yu and Dong Qianqiu walked through the Underworld, where she told him that Zhan Qisheng’s betrayal had caused the Legend Management Bureau to lose its influence and territory.
  • At a café on Stone of Three Lives pedestrian street, a tall woman in Warring States-era armor knocked a customer through the door and threatened the other patrons.
  • Dong Qianqiu recognized the woman as Zhongli Chun and tried to send Netherworld officer Bu Zudao to fetch a superior, but Zhongli Chun attacked him before he could finish speaking.
  • Dong Qianqiu caught Zhongli Chun’s punch just before it struck Bu Zudao and asked her to do her a favor.

Ch. 18Did I Get Superpowers?

Du Yu discovered that Zhongli Chun obeyed his commands, but after he left to summon help, constables captured and beat her. When Du Yu returned to defend her, Xie Bi'an arrived and found the situation unlike the one Du Yu had described.

  • Zhongli Chun shattered Dong Qianqiu’s Round Shield and injured her, but she stopped attacking when Du Yu told her to.
  • Du Yu ordered Zhongli Chun to stay put, then helped Dong Qianqiu to a hotel to recover and called Xie Bi'an for help.

After Dong Qianqiu, Fan Xiaoguo, and Du Yu helped Zhongli Chun, they brought her to the Legend Management Bureau, where He Suoyi barred her from watching the legend about to be reenacted. Du Yu learned that the Bureau forbade anyone from seeing their own legend, and the group prepared to investigate the story connected to Zhongli Chun.

  • Fan Xiaoguo bandaged Zhongli Chun, then learned who she was and watched her eagerly accept an orange from Du Yu.
  • Fan Xiaoguo shared milk tea with the group, and Du Yu calmed Zhongli Chun when she became angry over the drink.
  • He Suoyi called Dong Qianqiu back to the Legend Management Bureau, and Fan Xiaoguo drove her, Du Yu, and Zhongli Chun to Mount Unreturning.
  • Dong Qianqiu told He Suoyi what had happened, and he sent Zhongli Chun to Du Yu's room because the Bureau's legend might concern her.
  • He Suoyi explained that no one was allowed to watch their own legend being reenacted within the Legend Management Bureau.

Ch. 21An Underworld Phone

Du Yu chose to investigate Zhongli Chun’s Saltless Woman legend before the other urgent missions, and learned that she had waited in the underworld for him for 2,300 years. After getting a bureau phone, he turned Xie Bi'an’s attempt to sell his contact into a profitable deal, then received a video call from Fairy Chang'e, who recognized him as Pang Meng.

  • He Suoyi explained the bureau’s legend categories and urged Du Yu to prioritize Cui Jue Slays the Tiger and Black and White Impermanence, but Du Yu chose Zhongli Chun’s Saltless Woman legend instead.
  • He Suoyi warned that Zhongli Chun’s legend spanned decades and required repeated missions, then issued Du Yu a phone and scheduled his entry into the legend for the next day.
  • Dong Qianqiu took Zhongli Chun to stay in her office, and Zhongli Chun revealed she had waited 2,300 years in the underworld to see Du Yu.

Du Yu and Dong Qianqiu used a vision of the Queen Mother to frighten Hua into taking Zhongli Chun to Ghost Valley Mountain. There, after six months of searching for a reason to stay, Zhongli Chun became Guiguzi’s disciple and the junior sister of Sun Bin, Pang Juan, Su Qin, and Zhang Yi.
