Power Progression

The documented awakening sequence follows Ashina; the higher-ranked holders listed below are already at their stated ranks when described.

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Unawakened 4 Field’s status panel identifies Ashina’s advancement path as Wolf Cavalry Chosen One. Severe malnutrition leaves her on the verge of collapse.
Awaiting awakening 9 After ten days of improved nutrition and medicinal supplements, Ashina becomes ready to awaken using an Awakening Crystal 5 9.
First-Tier Chosen One 9 Awakens under the Goddess of Deep Winter. Gains the Wolf Rider class, a Dragon-Breed Wolf, specialized combat techniques, a divine skill, and a legion skill.

Advancement Requirements

  • Books attribute a Chosen One’s power to faith and a city’s prosperity. Ashina is said to require substantial faith from subjects to reach the second tier 20.
  • Field orders his subjects to include Ashina’s name in their prayers, but questions whether faith alone explains strength: the Holy Griffin Empire exceeds the widely worshipped Papal State in top-level combat power 20.
  • Battle Aura Elixirs do not meaningfully advance Chosen Ones; they function at most as supplements 42.

Selection and Awakening

Eligibility and Rarity

  • Chosen Ones emerge by divine will. Noble birth does not guarantee selection—even an empress’s daughter may remain ordinary 9.
  • National Awakening Day falls on September 1. Every woman of the appropriate age must undergo an examination 4.
  • Awakening is extremely rare. Golden Eagle City produced only three Chosen Ones in a century: two noble children and one clergy member 5.
  • Demihuman Chosen Ones are rarer still. The text associates their scarcity with the absence of powerful nations and prosperous cities among demihumans 5.
  • Field’s first-tier territory panel lists the chance of a Chosen One appearing as one in one hundred billion, alongside extremely poor development, happiness, and environmental conditions 24.

Awakening Crystals

  • The Empire uses Awakening Crystals to identify Chosen Ones during its annual examinations. One crystal can test nearly a thousand people 9.
  • Field pays sixty gold coins for the crystal used to awaken Ashina 9.
  • When Ashina touches the crystal, blue starlight forms an apparition of the Goddess of Deep Winter, then condenses into a rune on the back of her hand 9.
  • Ashina’s improved nutrition makes her ready for awakening; the passages do not establish that food or potions can turn an ordinary person into a Chosen One 4 5 9.

Lord Contracts

Formation and Mutual Growth

  • A lord is the counterpart to a Chosen One. After signing a contract, the two can strengthen one another and grow together 2.
  • Ashina initiates her contract with Field by drawing power from her rune and establishing a link with him 9.
  • Contracting with a Chosen One gives a person the chance to become a ranked lord. Field subsequently advances to a first-tier lord 24.
  • Human–demihuman contracts are possible: Field contracts with Ashina despite her having never heard of such a pairing before 5 9.

Talents Granted to Lords

Chosen Ones can provide additional lord talents. Ashina supplies Field with the following:

Talent Effect
Ferocious Beast Taming Makes ferocious beasts easier to raise for warfare within the territory 24.
Investiture Advances fifty Wolf Riders to the first tier. Field needs giant wolves before he can put it into use 24 34.

Detection

  • Field’s Mini-Map marks uncontracted Chosen Ones; Ashina initially appears as a green dot while still unawakened 4 43.
  • Contracted Chosen Ones disappear from the map. Ashina remains absent even when she is not concealing her aura 43.
  • Chosen Ones apparently can conceal themselves from one another: Elisa does not recognize Ashina during their encounter 42.

Appearance

  • Divine markings: Known holders bear distinctive symbols, including a forehead rune on Adrian’s protector, Ashina’s hand rune, and Elisa’s shining forehead angel symbol 2 9 42.
  • Physical transformation: Ashina grows taller and gains more refined features, a frost-white complexion, and an icy aura upon awakening 9.
  • Manifested gifts: Ashina’s rune transforms into her summoned Dragon-Breed Wolf 9.

Abilities & Skills

Enhanced Combat Ability

  • Awakening greatly strengthens physical abilities and grants mastery of specialized combat techniques 9.
  • A first-tier combat-class Chosen One can kill a third-tier Battle Aura Knight, crossing the ordinary rank gap 40.
  • First-tier Ashina defeats a third-tier corrupted Rat Monster, using her mount and divine skill despite cramped terrain preventing a mounted charge 17.
  • A third-rank Chosen One such as Elisa is described as having the combat power of a one-woman army 42.
  • Strength is not unlimited: fighting a large corpse horde leaves Ashina drenched in sweat, while her divine spear attack consumes considerable divine power and visibly tires her 17 22.

Divine and Legion Skills

Ashina’s abilities demonstrate the distinction between personal divine techniques and troop-enhancing legion skills.

Skill Type Documented effect
Spear of Piercing Extreme Cold Divine skill Forms a deep-blue starlight spear. Its first use tears apart the Rat Monster’s flesh and shatters bones and sinews 9 17.
Frenzied Howling Charge Legion skill Increases the impact power of cavalry under Ashina’s command by 100% 9.

Corruption Immunity and Purification

  • Chosen Ones are immune to the death miasma that kills and corrupts ordinary living beings 7.
  • Ashina can move freely through the Gray Fog without a Mist-Driving Lamp 14.
  • Her purification ability removes her slave mark upon awakening, before Field publicly destroys her Slave Contract 9.
  • She dispels a magical plant’s influence from Field 23.

Magical Resistance

  • Imperial experiments find that ordinary Chosen Ones can negate 35%–70% of magical damage 23.
  • Defense specialists may possess complete magical immunity or reflect magic 23.
  • Their supernatural energy is divine power, distinct from the mana required to activate conventional spells 38.

Support, Construction, and Production

  • Chosen One abilities extend beyond warfare to support and construction 2.
  • Chosen Ones and magical creations can affect food yields, but Ashina’s military specialization cannot directly improve Nightfall Territory’s production 47.
  • Holy Light Chosen Ones are involved in producing Mist-Driving Lamps and Purification Potions. Elisa states that production is limited but stops short of explaining the process 43.

Divine Gifts and Legacies

  • Bestowed treasures: Awakening may grant unusual treasures or creatures. Ashina receives a Dragon-Breed Wolf whose strength alone can match a third-tier Battle Aura Knight 9.
  • Divine artifacts: After death, a Chosen One’s soul and divine power remain in her weapon, forming a divine artifact. These artifacts gradually degrade and eventually crumble into sand 43.
  • Crimson Rose’s lance: The Ross Family retains a sixth-tier divine lance left by the fallen Chosen One Crimson Rose 9.
  • Other inheritances: Animals, techniques, magic, and battle aura can remain useful legacies. The royal griffins descend from the founding emperor’s Sacred Griffin 34.
  • Recovery missions: The Church sends Elisa’s party to recover artifacts left by Chosen Ones who died during Northern Frontier campaigns 43.

Social and Political Significance

Status and Patronage

  • Becoming a Chosen One offers an extraordinary rise in social standing. Even someone awaiting execution may be declared innocent and welcomed by nobles, reflecting the belief that the gods never choose wrongly 19.
  • A Chosen One can obtain a position in an imperial noble’s castle simply by expressing interest. Gareth therefore treats Ashina’s participation in a caravan raid as unusually undignified 40.
  • The possibility of a daughter or wife awakening gives lower-class families hope of escaping poverty; the narrative identifies this hope as one reason they hesitate to rebel 19.
  • Field conceals Ashina’s status because he fears assassination and her reassignment to another master if his family discovers her 10 29.

Territorial Defense and Religious Authority

  • Chosen Ones are stationed at imperial border fortresses. Field expects their presence to prevent the Gray Fog from seeping through 7.
  • Ashina’s awakening inspires the demihuman slaves to worshipful reverence and strengthens their trust in Field’s expedition 9 13.
  • Reliance on divine intervention can discourage practical innovation. Field encounters resistance to agricultural reform from people who believe only magic and Chosen Ones can improve yields 47.
