Name Corpse Ghouls
Original Name 腐尸
Alias(es) Rotting corpses, corpse monsters, zombies 6 7
Species/Race Humans transformed into corrupted monsters by Death Miasma 7
Origin Northern Frontier Province; corruption also spreads beyond its defensive walls 6 7
First Appearance Attack on Field’s caravan near Ka Mountain Fortress 6

Origin and Distribution

Corpse Ghouls form when humans succumb to the Gray Fog, also called Death Miasma. The miasma mingles with the air; inhalation rapidly kills its hosts and transforms them into corrupted monsters. Oak Village suffered a mass transformation when the fog seeped through Ka Mountain Fortress at night, corrupting most villagers in their sleep 7.

The fortress walls do not contain the threat reliably. Corpse Ghouls attack settlements within the defenses, including Bullhorn Village, whose hunters kill three intruders. In the Northern Frontier, they occupy ruined settlements, farmland, military buildings, and the Grand Winery; attacking groups also emerge from forests and the soil itself 9 11 16 21 43.

Appearance

  • Eyes: Gray-white or rolled white 6 10.
  • Bodies: Decaying human forms with ruined faces, twisted limbs, and sometimes extensive missing tissue. One attacker remains active with only half its body 7 13 16.
  • Blood and odor: Purple to blackish-purple blood accompanied by an intense putrid stench 6 10.
  • Clothing: Some retain peasants’ clothing or soldiers’ armor; others are naked 6 9 21.
  • Deformities: One soldier ghoul’s cheeks split open to its ears as it lunges to bite Ashina 10.

Behavior

Corpse Ghouls are aggressive but tactically mindless. During the first caravan attack, they charge directly into the wagon barricade and claw or bite the carts rather than find a way around them. They move without fear of death and continue pressing forward under attack 6.

Noise draws nearby ghouls into combat. The crash of a barracks door and the ensuing fighting attract corrupted soldiers, allowing Field to deliberately use noise to gather monsters for Ashina to destroy 10.

Some retain distorted human instincts. At Rum Village, a large crowd performs mating motions despite severe decay of their reproductive organs; the scene demonstrates lingering instinct, not confirmed reproductive ability 21.

Abilities & Skills

Movement and Close-Range Attacks

  • Rapid charges: Ghouls can pursue fleeing humans at a full sprint, though individual encounters also show staggering or crawling movement 6 7 13.
  • Natural attacks: They bite, claw, punch, and grab opponents 7 13.
  • Pulling riders down: A ghoul grabs a cavalryman’s cloak and yanks him from his horse; the impact kills him 7.

Activity Despite Severe Injury

  • A half-bodied ghoul crawls toward Field and attempts to bite his ankle 7.
  • Impaling a ghoul does not always stop its attack immediately; at the winery, a guard loses his balance after spearing one and is overwhelmed by the next wave 16.
  • Their persistence does not make them physically invulnerable: ordinary weapons can injure their bodies 7.

Corpse Venom and Corruption

  • Field fears corpse venom after narrowly avoiding a bite. Church clergy can cure it, but treatment requires at least one hundred gold coins 7.
  • Connor’s wounds from the ghouls develop writhing buds of flesh. By the time he reaches Starlit Grand Manor, he is partially corrupted and close to death 15.

Sharp Hearing

  • Wildcat explicitly warns that Corpse Ghouls have sharp hearing and orders his men to keep quiet 50.
  • Preventing an attacked ghoul from screaming allows guards to kill it without attracting nearby enemies 50.

Weaknesses and Countermeasures

Method Effect and limitations
Ordinary weapons Swords, halberds, farming tools, arrows, and crossbow bolts can kill them. They are not restricted to a single head-only killing method 6 7 13 21.
Head and neck attacks Decapitation, skull destruction, and severe neck injuries repeatedly disable ghouls 6 10 13 50.
Chest injuries Wildcat recommends repeated chest thrusts as an alternative to attacking the head. Iron Hammer kills one by crushing its fragile chest 21.
Barricades and formations Linked carts obstruct their direct attacks, while coordinated halberd thrusts pin individual ghouls in place 6 7 21.
Fire The Dragon-Breed Wolf’s blue flames reduce large groups to ash. Field prohibits their use inside the winery to preserve the building 13 16 21.
Protective armor Shields and lamellar armor withstand blows from ghoul fists and claws. Conversely, corrupted soldiers retain armor that makes them more intimidating to inexperienced fighters 10 13.
Mini-Map scouting Field detects corrupted monsters as red skull icons and uses their positions to avoid most encounters; densely packed hordes still force battles 6 13 15.
Mist-Driving Lamp Its holy light disperses Death Miasma and protects travelers from the fog’s poisoning. It does not eliminate the need to fight approaching ghouls 9 13.

Major Encounters

Encounter Events
Ka Mountain Fortress approaches Field’s caravan fights ghouls pursuing Oak Village refugees. Ashina saves Field from a half-bodied attacker, and Field orders the defeated corpses beheaded and burned 6 7.
Fortress barracks Ashina kills armored soldier ghouls; her Dragon-Breed Wolf burns a larger group drawn by the fighting. Field then uses deliberate noise to lure out nearby corpses 9 10.
Journey to Nightfall Territory Wagon defenses, ranged weapons, and Ashina’s attacks repel a swarm. Subsequent fighting leaves Connor the sole surviving cavalry scout, wounded and partially corrupted 13 14 15.
Grand Winery clearance Field, Ashina, and the guards destroy more than seventy ghouls while securing the building. Field later pays the guards one silver coin per ghoul killed 16 17 19.
Rum Village Seven approaching ghouls give recruits their first combat experience. Ashina burns most of the crowd in the fields, and the guards kill the survivors 21.
Territorial expansion and trade travel Ashina clears the granary and nearby hordes while the guards train and tackle stragglers. Ghouls also attack Field’s caravan on its journey to Mapleleaf Territory 30 31.
Return with Tate Repeated attacks by ghouls and other monsters kill thirty-nine people. Seven goats are used to lure away a Corpse Tide; all food supplies and cavalry survive 43 44.
Logging camp approach Wildcat and two guards begin the clearance quietly, attacking a ghoul’s neck and removing its head before it can scream 50.

Impact on Nightfall Territory

  • Recruit training: Weak individual ghouls serve as controlled opponents for recruits learning to fight and overcome their fear 21.
  • Military rewards: Field’s one-silver-coin bounty makes ghoul killing a source of income for his guards 19 21.
  • Combat confidence: Repeated victories over Corpse Tides help the Raider Cavalry develop the courage used in its later attack on Cooch’s caravan 40.
  • Fear and superstition: Slaves initially believe devils inhabit the corpses and that fighting them risks a curse. Field counters this belief by demonstrating that the creatures can be killed without such consequences 21.
