Background / History
Establishing Order
Agatha is among the older hatchlings surrounding Chaos when he emerges from his egg. With no dragon mother in the lair, the hatchlings must find their own food. Although she takes part of Chaos’s eggshell, she leaves him most of it and enforces a rule that no dragon may steal more than one-third of another’s shell. Four dissatisfied hatchlings attack her together; she defeats them but suffers shattered scales, a twisted right claw, broken talons, and bite wounds before entering her first slumber 2 3.
Chaos later impersonates Agatha while stealing Loya’s eggshell, prompting Loya to challenge the wrong dragon. Agatha recognizes the deception, catches the fleeing Chaos, and prevents the ensuing confrontation from becoming a fight. She establishes four cooperation rules, backed by the requirement that dissenters defeat her, then leads the group out of the hatching cavern 4 8 9.
Hunting and Protecting Chaos
Agatha organizes the hatchlings’ first Xelila hunt and later supplies the manpower for Chaos’s plan to attract Kashi through a river channel. She accepts his demand for every magic core obtained through his baiting method, telling the others they can challenge him if they reject his strength 10 16 20.
After Chaos describes a dangerous pool from a dream, Agatha scouts downstream and finds the exact location. She escapes an enormous tentacled creature with a severed tentacle as proof. Believing prophetic dreams indicate a bloodline connected to time, she begins placing greater weight on Chaos’s advice and resolves to help him reach adulthood quickly 22 23.
Agatha explains her special treatment of Chaos by asserting that he is the only male dragon in the plane. She promises to protect the hatchlings and restore dragonkind, while explicitly prioritizing his safety under normal circumstances. To accelerate his growth, she willingly nourishes Kashi meat with her blood and leaves it beside him 25.
The Bamokangla Campaign
When rising water threatens to expand the juvenile Bamokangla’s hunting range, Agatha and Chaos agree to kill it. She gathers prey and recruits the hatchlings to provide materials for his fourth-circle Water Serpent Magic Array. Faced with resistance, she avoids an immediate fight and persuades them to accompany her by explaining the threat and announcing that Chaos will leave with her regardless 27 31 32.
At the pool, Agatha deliberately draws an ambush and tears apart the Bamokangla’s tentacles with claws, teeth, and dragon breath. The display secures the other hatchlings’ submission. She then orders them to follow Chaos’s instructions and helps organize the defense of his formation during the final hunt 33 34 35 36 37.
After Chaos defeats the creature and collapses from mana exhaustion, Agatha reassures Feeny, clears space for him to rest, and directs the others to gather food. She also rests after using a burst of later-stage power 39.
Revised Plans
Agatha originally intended to raise Chaos to adulthood and have him mate with all the female hatchlings to preserve dragonkind. His rapid mastery of time power changes her approach. When Hera requests mating rights, Agatha says that any hatchling may approach him, but only Chaos can decide whether to agree 39.
She later proposes continued cooperation through their vulnerable hatchling years, offering Chaos all future hunting magic cores in recognition of his time power. While accompanying him into the salt cave, she checks for additional Sali that could endanger the group and carries a large block of salt ore back for him. When questioned about her motives, she promises not to harm him and acknowledges that she once had a different plan, without explaining it to him 47 49 50.
Appearance
- Crimson scales and slit pupils: Her eyes are variously described as crimson or scarlet; fine, rounded scales cover her eyelids 2 26.
- Unusually muscular build: She has visible muscle development from her first appearance, unlike ordinary hatchlings 2.
- Large frame: She consistently outgrows the surrounding hatchlings, reaching five meters by the salt-cave expedition 8 27 49.
- Broad back and heavy wings: Her crimson-scaled wings can brace a block of salt ore more than two meters long against her back 49.
Personality
Agatha is unusually controlled for a red dragon. Hera notices that her eyes lack their species’ expected volatility, while Chaos credits her with creating order rather than letting her strength become an excuse to run wild. She is direct and efficient, remembers the hatchlings’ names, and explains her ultimate goal simply as the survival of dragonkind 20 31 39 50.
Her leadership remains grounded in force. She pins unruly hatchlings down, challenges dissenters to defeat her, and privately considers punishing those who question her. Nevertheless, she can postpone retaliation when violence would jeopardize a shared plan, as she does during preparations against the Bamokangla 9 31 32.
Her protectiveness combines genuine concern with strategic priorities. She promises to safeguard every hatchling but places Chaos first because of his apparent importance to the species’ future. As his time power develops, she abandons her original reproductive plan and explicitly recognizes his right to choose his own partners 25 39.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Strength and Close Combat
Agatha combines overwhelming strength with speed, sharp claws, and powerful jaws. During her fight at the riverbank, Chaos recognizes stamina burst, sharp dragon claws, strength enhancement, reaction enhancement, and destructive dragon breath 34.
- Defeats four hatchlings simultaneously, though the battle leaves her badly injured and unable to fight again immediately 2 3.
- Kills a charging Kashi by bursting its head with one claw strike 24.
- Tears through Bamokangla tentacles with both claws and teeth, then evades retaliatory strikes 22 34.
- Remains disadvantaged against the Bamokangla underwater: she estimates a fifty-percent chance of victory there, compared with eighty percent if it comes ashore 31.
Destructive Dragon Breath
Her scarlet breath produces persistent flames that behave differently from ordinary fire 34.
- Burns through Bamokangla tentacles; the flames remain alight even after the tentacles withdraw underwater 34.
- Can reclaim the flames into her claw rather than leaving them burning 34.
- Handles objects coated in her flames without the fire spreading onto her 34.
- Uses her breath to heat the stone pot for Chaos’s hot pot 44 46.
Later-Stage Power Burst
- Temporarily unleashes young-dragon-stage power while still a hatchling, skipping two growth stages 39.
- The burst affects her condition afterward; she rests and eats instead of helping butcher the prey 39.
Dragon Blood Nourishment
Agatha willingly gives her blood to food intended for Chaos, using a dragon’s ability to accelerate another individual’s growth 25.
- Must be performed willingly; otherwise, her blood would be as searing hot as lava 25.
- Can be performed only once every half month 25.
- The passage states that the donor loses nothing from the process, though dragon arrogance normally discourages it 25.
Mobility and Senses
- Outlasts four accompanying hatchlings during downstream reconnaissance and continues alone after they need to rest 22.
- Evades a mass of rapidly striking tentacles while flying away with a severed tentacle in her jaws 22.
- Swims fast enough to overtake fish directly 19.
- Locates the white mineral grains in the salt cave by smell 49.
Leadership and Hunt Coordination
Agatha establishes the group’s cooperation rules and uses her strength to enforce them 9.
- Hunt together.
- Warn one another when danger is discovered.
- Share discovered herds of prey.
- Do not fight when food is scarce.
She also assigns digging, hauling, guarding, and food-gathering duties, while allowing Chaos to direct the magical aspects of their hunts 16 18 32 35 39.
Relationships
- Chaos — Protected hatchling and principal hunting partner. She feeds him, accelerates his growth, and increasingly consults him because of his time power. He trusts her protection but remains wary of her undisclosed original intentions 18 22 25 39 50.
- Hera — Fellow red hatchling who accepts Agatha’s species-preservation goal. Agatha permits her to pursue Chaos but refuses to grant mating rights on his behalf 20 39.
- Loya — A hatchling whose challenge is misdirected at Agatha after Chaos steals her eggshell under Agatha’s name. Agatha stops her fight with Chaos and later gains her reluctant cooperation 4 8 9 32.
- An — Black hatchling who helps break the group’s resistance by agreeing to follow Agatha on the Bamokangla expedition; Loya follows her lead 32.
- White Chubby — Chaos’s chosen companion. Agatha considers her foolish but shares food with her and regards Chaos’s concern for her as a positive trait 17 25 34 49.
- Feeny — Fairy who checks Chaos after his collapse. Agatha reassures and thanks her, surprising Feeny with her politeness 39.
Notable Quotes
“Defeat me, and you won't have to follow these rules.” 9
“Survival. I want the giant dragon species to live on. It's that simple.” 39
“That's not for me to decide. If you want mating rights to Chaos, you should ask Chaos, not me.” 39
Trivia
- The four hatchlings Agatha defeats believe she also knotted their tails together. Chaos actually tied the knots while they were unconscious 3 4.
- Chaos describes the meat nourished with her blood as tasting like chili peppers 25.
- Agatha accepts Chaos’s claim that he learned about salt through time power; the knowledge is absent from their inherited dragon knowledge 49.
