Appearance
- Scales: Their bodies are covered in scales, with white bellies visible when dead specimens float to the surface 15 24.
- Fins: Two pairs of red fins sit behind the gills and on the tailbones 15.
- Teeth: Their mouths contain sharp, protruding teeth resembling buckteeth 15.
- Size: The first shoal Chaos observes contains fish roughly one to six meters long; the species can reach ten meters 15.
Habitat & Behavior
- Cold-water preference: Kashi generally inhabit underground rivers or other cold waters. Chaos first encounters a shoal around one hundred meters beneath the underground river’s surface 15.
- Carnivorous feeding: They hunt other fish, including pursuing shoals together 15 28.
- Competition over food: A larger Kashi kills a smaller one competing for a Perceptive Vine, then swallows all three of its eyeballs 20.
- Limited intelligence: They possess only slightly more awareness and instinct than ordinary beasts. During the first ambush, many initially fight the dragons rather than flee, only attempting escape as casualties mount 24.
- Attraction to life force: The concentrated life force in Perceptive Vines’ eyeballs draws them toward the spell, making the vines effective bait 20.
Abilities & Skills
High-Speed Swimming
Kashi’s speed is their chief advantage in open water 15 32.
- A two-meter specimen turns almost instantly and crosses more than ten meters in a flash to bite off a Perceptive Vine’s eyeball 15.
- In the broad underground river, hatchlings struggle to catch them and may become their prey instead 32.
- Narrow pools restrict their movement and remove much of this advantage 32.
Powerful Bite
Their sharp teeth can destroy magical plant barriers 20 24.
- A three-meter Kashi tears through Chaos’s thorn-vine net in a single bite 20.
- A shoal shreds the remaining thorn vines while entering the hunting pool, forcing Chaos to rely on Agatha to block its escape route 24.
Mana Reinforcement
Kashi can use mana to strengthen their bodies 15.
- The True Dragon Inheritance entry attributes this reinforcement to the species and claims it makes their meat tastier 15.
- Despite this ability, the entry classifies them as weak, low-tier magical beasts 15.
Resources & Uses
| Resource | Properties and Uses |
|---|---|
| Meat | Abundant flesh praised as delicious in the True Dragon Inheritance. The first successful group hunt provides enough for all the hatchlings to eat their fill 15 25. |
| Magic Cores | White crystal cores containing highly concentrated water-element magic power. Chaos eats them to increase his maximum mana and later inscribes formation runes into them 20 25 35. |
| Bones | Long, nearly transparent bones, each over half a meter in length, are planted into the ground to construct the Water Snake Formation’s framework 36. |
| Blood-nourished carcass | Agatha infuses a Kashi with her dragon blood to nourish Chaos and accelerate his growth. The treated meat tastes like chili peppers; Chaos subsequently cooks it as spicy sliced-fish hot pot 25 26. |
Story Role / Major Arcs
Establishing the Hunting Pool
After discovering Kashi through Perceptive Vines, Chaos proposes connecting a nearby basin to the underground river. His initial plan is to attract smaller fish and shrimp with plants, then use their blood to lure Kashi. Agatha organizes the hatchlings to dig the channel 15 16.
Chaos later discovers that Perceptive Vines offer more effective bait. He agrees to summon enough vines for group hunts on the condition that every Kashi Magic Core belongs to him 20.
First Coordinated Hunt
The hatchlings hide underwater while Kashi enter the pool and consume the vines’ eyeballs. Once the last vine is eaten, Chaos initiates the ambush. Agatha guards the channel entrance and kills every fish attempting to escape; none of the Kashi that entered survives 23 24.
Preparing the Water Snake Formation
For a later hunt, Chaos deliberately punctures a vine’s eyeball, allowing its sap to disperse through the water, then draws the approaching Kashi into the pool. Twenty fish are shown entering; the completed hunt subsequently leaves twenty-three white Magic Cores 28 30.
The group carries intact Kashi skeletons and the collected cores toward the Bamokangla’s territory. Chaos uses their bones for the formation’s framework and their water-element cores as its magical power cores 32 35 36.
