Exclusion and Recruitment

White Chubby is the only White Dragon among the brood introduced in the cavern. Other hatchlings exclude her from their feeding group and repeatedly kick her away. After she charges a Blue Hatchling, a stronger kick sends her rolling into the crab shell beneath Chaos. He notices that she begins recovering quickly despite the collision 12.

Chaos recruits her by offering a crab claw, then promises more food if she obeys his orders, hunts alongside him, and lets him divide their catches. She agrees by nodding. Although she cannot speak Draconic, she understands his instructions. He names her White Chubby until she learns to speak it 13.

Hunts and the Bamokangla Expedition

White Chubby accompanies Chaos on hunts in the underground pool. During an early hunt, a fleeing shrimp collides with the fish she is chasing, allowing her to catch both in one bite 19. She later follows him into the group’s Kashi hunts and accepts his claim to the magic cores 23 28.

On the expedition to confront Bamokangla, White Chubby carries Chaos when his flight stamina fails. Her help prompts him to resolve that he will protect her in return 32 33. At the lake, he keeps her beside him rather than letting her approach the water with Agatha 34.

After Chaos defeats Bamokangla and collapses from mana exhaustion, White Chubby hurries over and tries to rouse him by nuzzling his head. She stops when Feeny asks to examine him, and is sleeping beside him when he awakens 39 40.

Sali Attack and the Salt Vein

White Chubby escapes from an opening in the rock wall with a Sali pursuing her. She rushes into Chaos’s arms, and Hera kills the beast before it can reach her 47.

Chaos discovers that White Chubby ate the Sali’s larva. Unable to explain through speech, she pulls the partly digested larva from her mouth and offers it to him; when he refuses, she swallows it again. He also notices a healing corrosion wound on her back, which he attributes to the pursuing Sali 48.

Salt granules clinging to her scales lead Chaos to investigate the opening she escaped through. White Chubby points out their source, enabling Chaos and Agatha to discover a salt vein. Before exploring it, Chaos feeds her hot-pot meat and teaches her to wash her claws and rinse ingredients 48 49.

White Chubby is strongly motivated by food. Feeding her quickly dispels her initial wariness toward Chaos, and the prospect of hunting makes her immediately enthusiastic. She associates obeying him with receiving food and repeatedly seeks his approval before eating 13 23 28 34.

She is affectionate and willing to reciprocate kindness. She sleeps pressed against Chaos, nuzzles his head and neck, carries him when he is exhausted, and offers him portions of her own food—even food pulled back out of her mouth 14 33 35 48 50.

Chaos regards her as simple-minded and unlikely to scheme like the other female hatchlings. Her clumsiness supports that impression, but she also has a strong sense of draconic dignity: when Feeny laughs at her fall, she immediately takes an attacking stance. Chaos’s reprimand makes her back down, though she briefly sulks 13 17 31.
