Bai Yaoyao called everyone over, and they set off together, planning to check out the situation in the city first.
Doggie had fallen into a deep sleep two days ago, and Bai Yaoyao suspected he was leveling up. Seeing him lying there with all four paws in the air, drooling, she couldn't help sighing.
The Dog Brother of this life and the Dog Brother of her last life seemed like two completely different dogs.
It seemed she would never again see the Dog Brother who had always stayed by her side, refusing to close his eyes and rest even when exhausted, determined to keep her safe.
Everyone realized that in just five days, the roads had already been wrecked beyond recognition. The once-smooth asphalt was now uneven and covered in cracks, with tree vines running through it.
The area around the Villa had been sparsely populated, with hardly any zombies, but this time, they found that their numbers had grown.
"Holy crap, look at this road! If we weren't driving the Marauder, we might not even be able to get through!" Monkey exclaimed.
"It's only been a few days. Why does it feel like the whole world has changed?" For once, A-Dai said something unrelated to food.
"Everyone, be careful. Even the weakest zombies are level one now. Don't get yourselves killed by being careless." Bai Yaoyao couldn't resist reminding them for the thousandth time.
"Got it, Sister Yao."
"Yaoyao, if someone gets infected, is there nothing we can do?" Lulu asked curiously.
"Not necessarily. Before they fully turn into Zombies, a light ability user at level three or higher can purge the zombie poison.
"And do you remember the old man Peiqi and Chenxuan saved last time? He'll invent a drug that works too, but that won't happen for years," Bai Yaoyao explained.
"Whoa, so he's a scientist?"
"What a shame. There are so many of us, but not one has a light ability."
"Not every ability awakens right at the start," Bai Yaoyao said. "A lot of people with a single ability awaken a new one when they reach level four."
Xiaomi was thrilled to hear that. With only a speed ability right now, Xiaomi had very little potential for growth and was terrified of becoming a burden to everyone later on. That was why Xiaomi had been training desperately, never daring to rest. Hearing there was a chance of awakening another ability suddenly lifted Xiaomi's spirits.
Everyone was chatting excitedly over their walkie-talkies when they suddenly heard Bai Yaoyao shout a warning.
They instantly went on alert and quickly got out of the vehicles. To keep the vehicles from being damaged, Bai Yaoyao put them straight into her space. They had reached the city anyway, and driving might not be any faster than walking.
Bai Yaoyao had been scanning with her mental power the whole time. When she sensed movement underground, she hurriedly warned everyone.
Once out of the vehicles, everyone quickly gathered toward the center, surrounding Peiqi, Keke, and Chenxuan.
Mounds suddenly rose in front of them and behind them. Through her mental power, Bai Yaoyao picked up a mass of skittering, rustling sounds. Suddenly realizing what these disgusting things were, she hurriedly said, "Run! It's an ant swarm!"
Nobody hesitated or even glanced back. They followed Sister Yao and fled as fast as they could.
Ants were disgusting things. It wasn't that they were particularly powerful, but they always came in swarms. Even if you exhausted your abilities, you might not kill them all.
"Fuck, those are ants? You've gotta be kidding me!" Xiaomi was fast enough to spare a glance back and saw that each mutant ant was roughly the size of an adult's palm. Not only were they glossy black, but their antennae looked as though they were fitted with serrated blades.
They charged in a swarm, leaving not even a scrap of sheet metal on the ground wherever they passed.
Bai Yaoyao realized that despite all their running, they hadn't widened the gap. Instead, the ants had gained on them considerably.
She took several barrels of oil out of her space and said, "A-Dai, Xiaomi, catch! Everyone else, don't hesitate! Keep running!"
"Got it!"
Nobody questioned Bai Yaoyao's decisions, especially in such a dangerous situation.
Bai Yaoyao, A-Dai, and Xiaomi kept running while pouring oil over the road, covering a stretch of about thirty meters.
The mutant ants were almost at the oil-covered stretch. Bai Yaoyao hurriedly said, "Dada Juan, set it on fire! Xiao Shiliu, blow the wind backward! Chenxuan, boost them!"
"Got it, Sister Yao!"
In an instant, flames engulfed the entire street.
As they ran, everyone noticed...
"Holy crap, that smells amazing! Sister Yao! I'm hungry!" A-Dai couldn't help saying.
Xiao Shiliu took a deep sniff. "Ant meat smells this good? Feels like we could just sprinkle on some seasoning and eat it!"
"I can't take this, I can't! Staying alive comes first. Keep running! I've got fucking trypophobia!" Peiqi said without looking back.
They ran another four or five streets before finally stopping.
"They didn't catch up, did they?" Fat Brother panted. After sprinting for more than half an hour, they had finally shaken them off.
"I finally reached level three and thought I'd go on a killing spree once I finished training. Instead, I got thrown straight into a high-speed escape!" Monkey scratched his head, disgruntled.
Bai Yaoyao sensed something was wrong and immediately unleashed all her mental power.
Sensing a dangerous presence racing toward her, she immediately warned everyone, "Don't let your guard down. We've got a tough one coming."
At her words, everyone quickly took up their practiced formation. Stone and Fat Brother stood at the front and jointly erected an earth wall to block it.
Within seconds, a rather unusual mutant ant charged toward them. It stood half as tall as a person, its two long, slender antennae crackling with electricity. The joints on all six legs seemed reinforced, and it had even grown wings on its abdomen, alternating between running and flying.
Bai Yaoyao frowned. This was at least a level-two mutant beast.
Mutant beasts were far stronger than ability users at the same level. Even someone two levels higher might not be able to beat one.
Lulu raised a hand and unleashed a bolt of lightning, but it had no effect on the mutant ant. In just a few breaths, the ant was right in front of them.
Bai Yaoyao hurled a Spatial Blade at its antennae. Aside from successfully drawing the Mutant Ant's aggro, it accomplished nothing.
The mutant ant charged at Bai Yaoyao. She used Teleportation to appear behind it, pulled out the large machete Fat Brother had reinforced with his metal ability, and hacked hard at its hind leg.
Unfortunately, even the blade cracked without inflicting any serious damage. Bai Yaoyao felt helpless. Lightning abilities, spatial abilities, and strength abilities were all virtually useless against this mutant ant.
"Everyone, attack together!"
Bai Yaoyao stopped testing it. So what if she couldn't beat it alone? She had a team. Who the fuck wanted to fight it one-on-one? Its little minions were all dead, but her buddies were still here.
