Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Dual-ability awakening 14 Awakens Speed and Darkness. Darkness is a Special-Type Ability that makes shadows and nighttime especially favorable for concealment.
Level 4 Darkness 80 Breaks through after absorbing a level-four crystal core for a day. At night, even Bai Yaoyao cannot pinpoint his location.
Level 6 Darkness 263 Confirmed at level six during a scouting excursion. Bai Yaoyao's teleportation would struggle to catch him without Mental Pressure; the breakthrough itself is not shown.
Level 7 311 312 Advances through combat rather than crystal-core absorption while clearing thousands of zombies. Gains black mist that reproduces nighttime conditions, removing his previous daytime weakness.
Level 9 472 501 Takes a defeated zombie's core into Bai Yaoyao's space to cultivate; later explicitly confirmed at level nine. The exact breakthrough is not shown.
Level 10 503 517 Secures the darkness Emperor-Class Zombie's core with Bai Yaoyao and Ouyang Ning's help, and is later explicitly confirmed at level ten. The absorption and breakthrough are not shown.
  • Unsuccessful level-eight attempt: A level-eight core runs out of energy before he can advance. Bai Yaoyao explains that lower-level cores can supply the remaining energy, prompting him to continue cultivating with level-seven cores 442.
  • Combat breakthrough significance: Level seven is described as the major threshold for high-end human combat strength. Independent breakthroughs are associated with more concentrated energy and greater reserves, although Bai Yaoyao cautions that such breakthroughs are exceptionally difficult 312 314.

Background / History

A-Dai lost his home and family in a fire as a child. His grandfather shielded him when a burning roof beam fell, enduring the injury while reassuring him. His master subsequently brought him into the organization and named him A-Dai because he seemed “dim” 46 179 232.

Several years younger than the other disciples, A-Dai arrived after they had already formed friendships. Frightened and hostile, he gradually lost the attention of those who initially tried to comfort him. Bai Yaoyao continued caring for him and helped him become part of the group; he eventually felt closer to her than to his master 46 540.

One formative gesture was Bai Yaoyao bringing him a Kids' Meal after noticing his fascination with televised fried chicken and fries. She sprinted up the mountain to keep it warm, carrying the food inside her clothes. A-Dai kept its little ocher-colored toy truck for years 46.

Before the apocalypse, he worked as an assassin and once stormed a foreign mercenary headquarters alone. He never attended school and later admitted that he could barely read 38 46 513.

Appearance

  • Youthful appearance: Frequently mistaken for a child or treated as Dark Night's youngest-looking member; Elder Chen later notices that he has grown taller while retaining a young-looking face 348 404.
  • Soft hair: Bai Yaoyao ruffles it while disciplining him 38.
  • Facial features: Described as not particularly refined, but nevertheless unusually handsome 350.
  • Battle clothing: Wears a simple black T-shirt and shorts during his level-seven breakthrough 312.

Personality

A-Dai is fiercely protective of Bai Yaoyao and initially cares little about people outside his own team. He reacts violently to threats against her and becomes jealous when others appear to encroach on their closeness. Her displeasure affects him more deeply than physical punishment: after she ignores him for wasting food, he fears that she will never speak to him again 46 62 79 281 511.

He holds grudges and combines an assassin's ruthlessness with a child's desire for treats, reassurance, and praise. Dark Night considers him the hardest member to offend after Bai Yaoyao. His cruelty can become theatrical: after killing one man, he arranges the severed body parts around the room and leaves a false suicide message 38 110.

Combat excites him, especially when others recognize his skill. He requests his own cheering section during a zombie battle and eagerly seeks sparring partners. By age twenty-three, however, he is willing to abandon his pride to avoid another beating from Bai Yaoyao 135 348 512.

His concern gradually extends beyond his fellow disciples. Friendship with Zhi Rui and Ouyang Ning, together with his attachment to Elder Chen, helps him understand Bai Yaoyao's responsibility toward others. Despite his violent habits, he firmly upholds his master's prohibition against harming battlefield veterans 235 509.

Abilities & Skills

Darkness Ability

A Special-Type Ability suited to concealment, ambushes, and nighttime combat 14.

  • Shadow concealment: Becomes partially invisible while using the shadow of an earth attack to approach and kill a level-four zombie 66.
  • Nighttime advantage: During one nighttime battle, zombies cannot touch him and his kill count exceeds Bai Yaoyao's 134.
  • Sensory suppression: Envelops enemies in darkness that cuts off all five senses 96.
  • Black mist: His level-seven breakthrough produces mist that blankets almost the entire battlefield and gives him nighttime conditions even during the day 312.
  • Mist detonation: Develops a technique that wraps a monster in black mist before detonating it 398.

Speed Ability

His speed complements his stealth, allowing him to close distances rapidly and strike before opponents can respond 14 79.

  • Evades a mutant wolf's attacks beneath the trees and kills it with a single slash 54.
  • Scouts alongside Xiaomi, another speed user 85.
  • Overwhelms Xie Shannan's ranged ice attacks through rapid movement and relentless close-range pressure 282.
  • Remains vulnerable to spatial barriers: accelerating into Bai Yaoyao's invisible walls only makes the collisions worse 495.

Assassination and Close Combat

A-Dai specializes in rushing opponents and delivering explosive damage, often aiming for a quick killing strike 38 342.

  • Precision kills: Uses clean slashes against unsuspecting targets during covert operations 273.
  • Aggressive exchanges: Accepts injuries to reach Xie Shannan and later attempts to trade injury for injury against Bai Yaoyao 282 283.
  • Mental-pressure tolerance: Regular sparring with Bai Yaoyao makes Xie Shannan's weaker Mental Pressure largely ineffective against him 282.
  • Defensive limitation: At level seven, he has no defensive option beyond speed. If his opening attack fails and he becomes trapped, he is in danger 342.

Black Chains

A-Dai learns to form darkness into restraining chains by observing Ouyang Ning 349.

  • Immediately copies Ouyang Ning's wrist-binding technique, producing ten thicker chains and lifting him into the air 349.
  • Later uses a ranged chain attack around a Sound Ability Emperor-Class Zombie's neck, interrupting its howl and creating an opening for himself and Big Meow 517.

Team Techniques

  • Darkness–light combination: A-Dai suppresses an enemy's senses before Xiaomi releases a light-explosion bomb. They develop it while practicing on zombies, though it is better suited to humans and mutant beasts 96.
  • Cooperation with Ouyang Ning: Ouyang Ning restrains their shared opponent while A-Dai closes in to deal damage; their familiarity with darkness abilities allows effective coordination 503.
  • Mounted tactics: Initially struggles to coordinate with A-Cong. After observing Bai Yaoyao's tactics, he adopts a plan in which A-Cong keeps the opponent occupied while he ambushes from the side 342 345.
  • Lighting limitation: Xiaomi's intense light interferes with his preferred fighting conditions, leading him to avoid it or request that Xiaomi extinguish the ability 135 312.

Scouting and Instruction

  • Reconnaissance: Secretly delivers faction profiles, photographs, and a base map to Bai Yaoyao under cover of darkness 172.
  • Harsh training: Puts Zhi Rui's five trainees through repeated brutal sessions followed by Peiqi's healing; their strength improves rapidly 203.
  • Teaching speed techniques: Offers to teach Zhi Rui a finishing technique because they share the Speed Ability 531.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Dagger — Used for concealed attacks, assassinations, and arena combat; he can slide it down to his cuff before opening a door 260 273 283.
  • Twin Blades — Wielded against the darkness Emperor-Class Zombie, including the final strike into its neck 503.
  • Ocher-colored toy truck — Keepsake from the first Kids' Meal Bai Yaoyao brought him; he keeps it on him for years 46.

  • Master — Took him into the organization after his family's death and gave him his name. A-Dai follows his rule against harming battlefield veterans 46 179 235.
  • Grandfather — Died protecting him during the fire. Memories of him shape A-Dai's attachment to Elder Chen 232 235.
  • Elder Chen — A grandfather-like figure whose stubbornness mirrors his own. A-Dai rescues him, seeks treatment for his old wound, and stays beside his bed through the night as his health fails; Elder Chen says A-Dai resembles his grandson 233 235 513.
  • Zhi Rui — Close friend who helps him study, brings him promises of sweets, and enthusiastically praises his fighting. Their friendship marks a major change from A-Dai's childhood withdrawal 183 230 417 531.
  • Ouyang Ning — Fellow darkness user, initially a sparring opponent whose techniques A-Dai copies. Their shared battle against the darkness Emperor-Class Zombie resolves their earlier friction and brings them close 349 503.
  • Xiaomi — Frequent scouting partner and collaborator in their darkness–light combination attack 85 96.
  • Monkey — Competitive teammate and habitual sparring partner. Their taunts and laundry wagers coexist with genuine pride in each other's growth 80 285 342.
