The moment Bai Yaoyao heard Lin Yiran's sickly-sweet, manipulative tone, she knew what she was thinking.
But it didn't matter. If she died, at least there would be some peace and quiet. Villains were the biggest waste of time.
"Hello, Captain Bai. I'm Cui Ying, and this is Zhang Jiahui. We're spatial ability users, and we've been assigned to join you on today's mission."
"Hello. Let's head straight out." Bai Yaoyao scanned them: one was level one, the other level two.
"All right," Cui Ying said.
Since they didn't need to transport survivors today, there was no need for a large truck. They took three military off-road vehicles instead.
Bai Yaoyao was green with envy again. She wondered when she could trade with Meng Qilin for a few to keep in reserve. She still had too few vehicles and was always worried that zombies would wreck her precious rides.
Cui Ying looked like a delicate young woman, but she drove aggressively, always eager to ram zombies. That gave her and Bai Yaoyao a shared interest, and the two chatted happily along the way.
Bai Yaoyao also learned quite a bit about what the authorities were doing.
Construction of the base in City D had already begun, and important figures from several nearby cities had already gone there.
After a brief period of chaos, the authorities had now fully regained their footing. They had executed quite a few of the thugs who had thrown their weight around early on, and the City D base would be jointly managed by the military and the civilian government.
Bai Yaoyao didn't pay much attention to the other details. It was just somewhere to stay. If it was comfortable, she would stay a little longer. If the place was chaotic or she couldn't get along with whoever was in charge, she would go somewhere else.
It was no big deal. In the end, it came back to the same thing: as long as she was strong enough, nothing else was a problem.
"Stop the car!"
Cui Ying had been talking about how delicious yesterday's tiger meat had been when Bai Yaoyao suddenly shouted for her to stop. Startled, she nevertheless reacted quickly and brought the vehicle to a steady halt.
Bai Yaoyao got out immediately. Although she had been chatting the whole time, she had never let up on scanning with her mental power.
There was a powerful energy fluctuation ahead. It felt somewhat like a level-four zombie, but she wasn't certain yet.
"Everyone, be careful. It seems to be a level-four zombie!" Bai Yaoyao warned, letting Doggie, Little Crook, and Big Meow out as well.
Everyone prepared themselves, but after roughly ten minutes, the zombie still hadn't appeared.
"Yaoyao, where's the zombie?"
"About twenty meters away. It's stopped moving. Level-four zombies have some intelligence already. It's waiting for us to come to it," Bai Yaoyao replied.
"So what do we do now?"
"Charge. I've been itching to get my hands on a level-four crystal core!"
"Roger."
As soon as Bai Yaoyao finished speaking, everyone rushed forward together.
Cui Ying and Zhang Jiahui exchanged a glance, suddenly understanding why the Dark Night Squad was so strong. Their speed of action alone was beyond what an ordinary ability-user squad could match, never mind the two powerful mutant beasts and a mutant willow tree.
Dark Night didn't feel like a civilian organization. It felt more like a team that had worked together for years.
The moment everyone started moving, the zombie moved too-not charging at them, but fleeing.
Bai Yaoyao's level-three spatial ability still couldn't use Teleportation repeatedly. She could only use it about once every ten minutes, so A-Dai and Xiaomi were the fastest.
A-Dai wanted to redeem himself with a good deed. Xiaomi had just gained a new ability, and although it was only useful for lighting things up, that did nothing to dampen his excitement.
The two raced each other, each trying to outdo the other, when a white blur flashed past. Well, Big Meow had beaten them to it.
Big Meow pounced, slashing open the zombie's back. Dark green blood gushed out.
It was a male zombie, still wearing a suit, though it had long since been reduced to tatters. His facial features looked as though they had shifted out of place, pus oozed all over his face, and a large hole had been torn through his chest.
From level four onward, zombies became extremely resilient. Unless their heads were destroyed, they wouldn't die.
While Big Meow fought the zombie, the others caught up.
"Cut off its escape!"
"Got it!"
Seeing that it was only an ordinary level-four zombie, Bai Yaoyao relaxed a little.
With so many of them taking turns attacking, they were bound to wear it down.
Holding her baseball bat, Bai Yaoyao used Teleportation, flooded her arms with her strength ability, and swung hard at the zombie's head.
Unfortunately, the zombie's reactions were quick too. The blow missed its head and struck its shoulder instead, caving the entire shoulder in. As though enraged, the zombie stopped fleeing, let out a harsh roar, and lunged at Bai Yaoyao.
This was exactly what Bai Yaoyao had been waiting for. She darted aside and opened up some distance. A-Dai and Xiaomi slashed at the zombie's neck simultaneously, Bai Yaoyao followed with Spatial Cut, and Big Meow added another swipe of its claws.
Only after their combined attacks did they manage to sever the zombie's head.
By the time the main group caught up, A-Dai had already dug out the crystal core.
"Damn, you didn't leave any fun for us! We ran all the way here, and you're already done!" Monkey said.
Peiqi marveled, "So this is a level-four crystal core? It's so bright! So pretty!"
"The higher the level, the prettier they are," Bai Yaoyao replied.
"Yaoyao, hurry up and get your spatial ability to level four so everyone can stink together! Haha!" Xiaomi was still annoyed by Monkey's teasing and was just waiting for Monkey to stink so he could give him a taste of his own medicine.
"Mm, I'll use this crystal core first, along with the others I've saved, and see if I can get my spatial ability to level four." Bai Yaoyao nodded without standing on ceremony.
"No problem. I want to look prettier too. Your skin is so fair and rosy, you don't even need face masks!" Lulu tried to poke Bai Yaoyao's cheek, but Bai Yaoyao caught Lulu's hand and poked back. They fooled around for quite a while.
By the time Cui Ying and Zhang Jiahui arrived, everyone had already been chatting for ages.
"You're done?" Cui Ying asked in surprise.
"Yep."
"Wasn't it a level-four zombie? How did you finish so quickly?" Cui Ying had expected Dark Night to be able to take down a level-four zombie, but she hadn't expected it to be so easy. It seemed Captain Meng had still underestimated Dark Night's strength.
They were far stronger than the authorities' teams of ability users.
Bai Yaoyao offered no explanation and simply urged them on. "Let's go. We should get to the hospital. Aren't we almost there?"
"All right. Don't you need to rest for a bit?" Cui Ying asked.
"No need. We'll rest on the way."
After another twenty-odd minutes of driving, they finally reached Central City Hospital.
Bai Yaoyao said nothing about where to find the medicine or which way to go. She followed Cui Ying's directions completely and stuck to being the muscle.
Perhaps because sick people already carried viruses, there were especially large numbers of zombies. They encountered more than a dozen level-three zombies alone. Fortunately, Big Meow's addition had dramatically increased the squad's combat strength, so they weren't overwhelmed.
Still, to be safe, they didn't split up again. They advanced together in a protective circle, with Doggie, Big Meow, and Little Crook clearing the way at the front, Stone and Fat Brother on either flank, and Bai Yaoyao bringing up the rear. Those with few means of defending themselves stayed in the middle.
