Background / History

Zheng Chengdong accompanied Meng Chengfei on his first mission. According to Zheng, every Awakened in the Ninth Team had died at that time, and he helped Meng Chengfei survive and rebuild the team into its present form 13.

Meng Chengfei chose to become an Awakened because he believed humanity would perish unless people confronted contamination, radiation, distortion, and madness. He regards the Dawn Blade’s work as service to humanity rather than to the nobility 6 7.

His past includes erased memories and an unresolved grievance against nobles over events ten years earlier. During his confrontation with a Bronze Noble, he indicates that the memory erasure has not made him forget their culpability. He also knows the history of an Eternal Church attack that devastated the Ninth Team 22 30.

Appearance

Meng Chengfei has broad, open features, deep black eyes, and curly tawny hair. His usual gentle, refined bearing reminds Xu Ye of a schoolteacher, contrasting sharply with his colder or more violent expressions 5 6.

Personality

Meng Chengfei is usually courteous, patient, and reassuring. He explains unfamiliar dangers to Xu Ye, welcomes him warmly into the Dawn Blade, and teaches him how to use a secondary personality without surrendering control of his mind 5 8 12.

His protectiveness is deliberate rather than unquestioning. He defies the order to execute Xu Ye, but remains prepared to kill him if he shows signs of losing control. He similarly prevents Li Yunyao from awakening because he fears her emotional condition would make a secondary personality especially dangerous 7 30.

He favors methodical investigation: gathering intelligence, identifying a contamination incident’s causal chain, and selecting targeted countermeasures. When a situation deteriorates, however, he can commit immediately to direct combat or support a subordinate’s improvised plan 11 15 17.

His mild manner conceals considerable aggression. Iron Block’s personality brings out hysteria and bloodlust, which he actively suppresses with calming tea. He also uses mockery against hostile nobles, shifting from absurd jokes to explicit threats when they demand Xu Ye’s surrender 6 11 22 43.
