Background and History
Yhwach is the Soul King’s son and the ancestor of the Quincy. He seeks to overturn the world sustained by his father and create one without the boundary between life and death 58 482 501. He grants power to followers through his blood, building the Sternritter while retaining the means to reclaim their power 80 81 482.
During his first invasion of Soul Society, Yhwach fights Yamabuki Chidori and is ultimately defeated after Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto joins the battle. He is not completely eliminated and later enters a long dormant period 139 175 239 454.
After awakening, Yhwach rebuilds the Wandenreich and renews the war. In the later invasion, he initially avoids a direct confrontation with Chidori, captures Tier Harribel in Hueco Mundo, and uses an assault on the Seireitei to reach the Soul King Palace 484 485 501 504. There, he sacrifices Quincy forces through Auswählen, defeats Ichibē, manipulates Ichigo into killing the Soul King, and absorbs his father’s body 512 513.
Appearance
Yhwach wears black robes that distinguish him from the white-clad Quincy around him 483.
- His presence puts Uryū Ishida under immense pressure; those serving him fear saying the wrong thing 483.
- He carries a Reishi greatsword in combat and can fight alongside a Spirit Bow 138.
Personality
Yhwach is convinced that destroying the existing order will produce a better world without death. He repeatedly offers powerful opponents, including Chidori, Ichigo, and Aizen, a place in that world, but responds ruthlessly when they refuse 137 512 521 523.
He treats the Wandenreich’s soldiers as resources whose power will return to him. His use of Auswählen eventually drives followers such as Liltotto to reject him 482 512. Although often arrogant about his strength, he recognizes Chidori as a threat and orders the Sternritter to retreat rather than fight him 485.
