Background / History

Before joining the Gotei 13, Unohana pursued swordsmanship across the Rukon District. After claiming mastery of every sword school in the world, she gave herself the title Yachiru; unable to find opponents who could satisfy her, she broadened her challenges and killed extensively. Her reputation as the Sword of Death became so feared that even hardened criminals avoided her. 42 48 88

She entered the Seireitei seeking worthy opponents and asked for Central 46. Along the way, she effortlessly incapacitated Chōjirō Sasakibe and Hachisato, wounded Saitō Fubōfu by exploiting her blind spot, and fought both Saitō and Gen'en Kinra. 42 43

Unohana proceeded to Central 46, where she slaughtered many sages whom she regarded as disgraceful rulers. She defeated Saitō and Gen'en without injury and demanded that the Gotei 13 produce its strongest fighter. 43

Yamabuki Chidori intervened and fought her to a mutual stalemate.
