History
Aizen enters Shino Academy as an apparently frail, scholarly boy. Though he is regarded as the worst-ranked student in his class, both Shunsui Kyōraku and Yamabuki Chidori immediately take interest in him. He declines Kyōraku's invitation to the 8th Division and instead becomes Chidori's personal disciple, exempting him from normal academy attendance. 227 228
Under Chidori, Aizen rapidly learns Kidō, swordsmanship, Flash Step, Hakuda, poisoncraft, and battlefield strategy. Chidori repeatedly warns him that his tendency to become complacent after gaining an advantage is fatal; this lesson follows Aizen's injury in a Hollow battle after he pauses to explain his plan rather than finishing the enemy. 229 235 236 237 242
Aizen's rejection by Aoko triggers a Hollow transformation, during which he kills Aoko and the nobleman's forces. The event exposes both the intensity of his attachments and the danger of his losing control. 235
After awakening Kyōka Suigetsu, Aizen discovers the forbidden history surrounding the Soul King and Chidori's research into surpassing Soul Reaper limits. He resolves to control his own fate, stand at the summit of the heavens, and eventually occupy the throne himself. 238 239
He joins the Gotei 13 through the 11th Division, undertakes dangerous missions, and conceals his growing strength behind a gentle public image. Following his acquisition of Quincy power, he infiltrates the 12th Division while impersonating Chidori, approaches the imprisoned Baraggan, and later deposes him to take Hueco Mundo's throne. 240 265 267 268 281
Appearance
When first introduced, Aizen appears to be an eleven- or twelve-year-old boy with glasses, a frail build, and the demeanor of a gentle scholar. 227
- Wears glasses; later uses specially treated contact lenses in combat. 227 263
- Maintains a mild, harmless-looking smile around others. 227 260
- His outwardly gentle appearance contrasts sharply with his private confidence and ambition. 228 238
Personality
Aizen presents himself as patient, kind, dependable, and even-tempered. This persona earns him a strong reputation among Soul Reapers and academy students, but Shinji Hirako recognizes that his constant smile is artificial. 260 427
Beneath that façade, Aizen is calculating, emotionally distant, and intensely committed to self-determination. He regards people, powers, and relationships as tools to be used in securing freedom from anyone who might control him. 228 238
He is exceptionally cautious when preparing for a threat, studying opponents' abilities, carrying tailored counters, and manipulating others into revealing information. However, he has a documented weakness for overconfidence after taking the upper hand, a flaw Chidori attempts to correct early in his training. 235 253 263
Abilities & Skills
Kyōka Suigetsu
Aizen's Zanpakuto grants Complete Hypnosis. Anyone who witnesses its release can have all five senses—including Reiatsu perception—controlled by Aizen. 238
- Publicly presented as a water-type Zanpakuto that creates water clones, concealing its true nature. 238 276
- Can create convincing false bodies, injuries, environments, and identities; Aizen uses it to impersonate Yamabuki Chidori and mislead enemies into attacking illusions. 267 306
- Initially controls Seated Officers completely, affects Lieutenants with difficulty, and cannot influence Captain-class opponents whose Reiatsu far surpasses his. 238
- Its effectiveness grows with Aizen's Reiatsu; after his Quincy-enhanced growth, he can convincingly impersonate Chidori before Captain-level figures. 267
- Blind opponents who cannot witness its release, such as Batman and Kaname Tōsen, are immune to its hypnosis. 253 423
- Aizen later counters the known method of touching the blade before activation by coating Kyōka Suigetsu with anesthetic. 475
Kidō and Healing
Aizen learns Kidō at an exceptional pace and combines it with combat tactics, healing, and deception. 229 251
- Masters Hadō #1: Thrust and Hadō #4: White Lightning shortly after beginning training. 229
- Uses Kidō to heal his own wounds, surpassing most Fourth Division members in practical treatment. 251 279
- Employs Kidō bullets, illumination flares, defensive spells, and Spirit Particle Muskets in battle. 253 301
- Cannot learn Chidori's Spirit Particle Suture Technique because he initially lacks the required spirit-particle control. 251
Swordsmanship and Hakuda
Aizen can reproduce sword techniques after seeing them once and develops strong close-combat fundamentals under Chidori and Kamishirokawa. 229 250
- Learns Hakuda through barehanded combat against a Hollow in an execution pit. 237
- Knows Black Tiger Takes the Heart and Welcome-the-Head Thirteen Kicks. 237
- Uses Flash Step to evade, reposition, and ambush opponents. 233 262
- Can fight opponents with superior Reiatsu through preparation, timing, terrain, and deception. 229 254
Poisoncraft
Chidori teaches Aizen poison-making to compensate for Kyōka Suigetsu's lack of direct offensive power. 241 242
- Prepares concentrated anesthetics, Torture Drugs, Hemostatic Agents, and other poisons. 253
- Coats his blade with anesthetic, allowing even a minor wound to incapacitate an enemy. 253 475
- Uses Torture Drugs to heighten his senses, enabling him to match Batman's hearing in darkness. 253
- Employs poison as a safeguard against opponents who can resist or avoid Kyōka Suigetsu. 253 475
Quincy Power
After absorbing power from Chidori's bootleg Hogyoku, Aizen gains Quincy spirit-particle manipulation. 265
- Forms an icy-blue Spirit Bow from gathered spirit particles. 265
- Develops Blut Vene, granting defensive protection capable of ignoring most Lieutenant-level attacks in direct combat. 275
- His Reiatsu growth accelerates substantially after acquiring Quincy power. 267
Hollowfication Research and Hogyoku Evolution
Aizen researches the fusion of Soul Reaper and Hollow powers, using prisoners and other subjects for Hollowfication experiments. 282
- Demonstrates advanced Hollowfication expertise by successfully infusing a Hollow particle into a Modified Weapon in a single attempt. 379
- Uses a King's Flash Cero against Baraggan. 280
- Evolves through the Hogyoku, ultimately reaching the Sixth Hogyoku Stage. 476
- His Hogyoku-enhanced body can regenerate from severe injury, though Chidori's Space-Time Sealing Technique can prevent that regeneration. 478

Aizen both respects and fears Chidori's insight, while secretly hoping to recruit Chidori for his eventual challenge to the Soul King. Their relationship becomes openly adversarial after Chidori's long-term counterplan is revealed. 228 241 472 476

- Salkapolo — Menos Grande scientist who submits to Aizen after the conquest of Hueco Mundo and assists with Hollowfication experiments. 281 282
- Kaname Tōsen — Chosen by Aizen as a potential pawn because his blindness makes him immune to Kyōka Suigetsu. Aizen considers him a trusted lieutenant until Tōsen reveals that he had been Chidori's agent from the beginning. 423 472
- Gin Ichimaru — Subordinate whose loyalty Aizen repeatedly tests. Aizen eventually learns that Gin's infiltration was connected to Chidori's protection of Rangiku Matsumoto. 469 475
- Kuro no Suke — Fifth Division traitor pursued by Aizen. Aizen exploits his desperation for information and treats the mission's completion as more important than Kuro no Suke's family. 262 263
- Orihime Inoue — Collaborates with Aizen to create a weapon that produces a void outside normal space and time, exhausting both of their Reiatsu. 469
