Forms and awakening
- Asauchi — An unawakened sword used to draw out a Soul Reaper’s power. Communicating with the spirit and learning its name are steps toward release 67 237 238.
- Shikai — The first released form. Its effect varies by blade: it may change shape, produce an elemental attack, summon creatures, or apply a less visible ability 20 216 238 342.
- Bankai — A second form that can greatly expand a Zanpakutō’s power. Chidori identifies sufficient Reiatsu and communication with the spirit—including learning the Bankai’s name—as requirements for mastering it 76 334.
