Geography and Structure
The Grand Line is an exceptionally dangerous sea divided into two halves by the Red Line. Its second half is known as the New World, where the Four Emperors hold immense influence 74 175.
The Red Line is a ring-shaped continent that intersects the Grand Line and divides the world into the East Blue, West Blue, South Blue, and North Blue. The Grand Line’s entrance is reached through Reverse Mountain, whose currents flow upward before carrying ships down into the route 73 74.
The Calm Belt runs alongside the Grand Line. It has no wind or ocean currents and is inhabited by enormous numbers of Sea Kings, making it an impractical route for ordinary ships 71 74.
Navigation
The Grand Line cannot be navigated reliably through ordinary sailing knowledge alone. Its magnetic fields, weather, currents, and air currents are highly unstable 76.
- Log Pose — Records the magnetic field of each island and points toward the next destination 76 78.
- Eternal Pose — Points permanently toward a specific island. Sanji’s Eternal Pose to Alabasta allowed the crew to avoid waiting a year for Little Garden’s magnetic field to be recorded 92.
- Nami’s navigation — Nami repeatedly guides the crew through abnormal currents and weather, including the Knock Up Stream and the waters near Laugh Tale 14 133 509.
- Road Poneglyphs — Four Road Poneglyphs mark locations whose intersection reveals Laugh Tale. Reaching the island therefore requires historical information as well as navigation 502 506.
Even Nami’s exceptional skill becomes insufficient near Laugh Tale, where the currents cannot be matched to the route map and the weather becomes impossible to predict 513.
Hazards and Phenomena
| Phenomenon | Description |
|---|---|
| Unstable weather | Snow, rain, thunder, lightning, fog, and other conditions can appear in rapid succession, often without regard for the season 78 79. |
| Storms and currents | Sudden storms can create enormous waves, whirlpools, and waterspouts. Moonlight warns that the sea itself is more dangerous than the Marine forces pursuing the crew 57 512. |
| Calm Belt | A windless, currentless region inhabited by dozens, hundreds, or potentially thousands of Sea Kings 71. |
| Reverse Mountain | A powerful upward current carries ships into the Grand Line, with uncontrolled speed capable of destroying them against the mountain walls 74. |
| Knock Up Stream | An underwater volcanic phenomenon that creates a massive current capable of launching ships into the sky and reaching Skypiea 133 135. |
| Seven-Colored Mist | A legendary mist known as the Ship’s Graveyard. Sword Aura vanishes inside it, and no ship or person is said to have returned after entering 124. |
| Punk Hazard | An island permanently divided between fire and ice after the battle between Aokiji and Akainu 273 274. |
| Super Vortex | A vast whirlpool near Laugh Tale containing violently converging currents and gigantic deep-sea creatures 516 523. |

| Skypiea | A sky-island reached through the Knock Up Stream and the White Sea 133 136. |
| Enies Lobby | A restored World Government stronghold secretly connected to the route leading toward Laugh Tale 523. |
| Fish-Man Island | A major point beneath the Grand Line and the route into the New World 250 252. |

| Laugh Tale | The Final Island, reached through the combined information of the four Road Poneglyphs and associated with the One Piece 506 516. |
Story Role
The Grand Line represents the central challenge of the Straw Hat Pirates’ journey. Before entering it, the crew makes its individual vows: Luffy seeks to become Pirate King, Nami to map every sea, Sanji to find the All Blue, Zoro to surpass the world’s greatest swordsmen, Usopp to become a brave warrior, and Moonlight to find One Piece and uncover the world’s lost history 74.
After reaching Twin Capes, the crew encounters the Grand Line’s abnormal weather, strange islands, ancient mysteries, and increasingly powerful enemies. The route repeatedly forces them to combine Nami’s navigation, Usopp’s observation, Moonlight’s protection, and the specialized abilities of the rest of the crew 78 79 133 158.
The New World intensifies these dangers. The region is dominated by powerful pirate factions, the Marines, the Revolutionary Army, and the Four Emperors. Moonlight warns that the return of Rocks and the movements of Blackbeard, Kaido, Big Mom, Shanks, and the Revolutionary Army have made the route more dangerous than ever 506.
Route to Laugh Tale
The journey toward Laugh Tale requires more than following a Log Pose. After Shanks reveals that he possesses the fourth Road Poneglyph, the Straw Hats locate it in the East Blue and combine it with the other three. Nami identifies the intersection of their marked locations, revealing the route toward the Final Island 502 506.
The waters near Laugh Tale display unusual properties:
- Currents and marine life from the four Blues appear to converge in the same region, leading Sanji to identify the All Blue 513 514.
- A colossal Divine Tree dominates Laugh Tale and is connected to the surrounding land and Super Vortex 516 518.
- The island’s ground suppresses Devil Fruit users, while the tree’s roots are connected to the origin of Seastone 518.
- Enies Lobby provides a hidden route between the Grand Line and Laugh Tale, a secret apparently known to Im 523.
Laugh Tale ultimately becomes the meeting point of the world’s major powers. The Navy, pirates, the Revolutionary Army, the Straw Hats, Im, and the Five Elders converge there in a decisive conflict over the world’s history and future 536.
End of the Great Voyage
The death of the Sea Devil causes all Devil Fruits to disappear, changing the balance of power across the Grand Line. Luffy, Robin, and other former Devil Fruit users lose their supernatural abilities, while crews that relied on physical strength or Haki remain powerful 543.
After the war and the collapse of Im’s rule, the Straw Hat Pirates leave Laugh Tale together. The Grand Line remains the setting of their continuing journey rather than a final stopping point 543.
