Background / History

Zoro was held at Marine Branch 153 and left tied to a cross to await execution after Helmeppo broke his promise to spare him. Luffy, Coby, and Rika came to rescue him, and Zoro remained defiant even while facing Colonel Morgan’s forces 5.

Moonlight’s arrival and overwhelming swordsmanship deeply impressed Zoro. After Morgan’s defeat, Zoro chose to join Luffy’s crew, declaring his ambition to become the World’s Greatest Swordsman; he accepted piracy because his conflict with the Marines had severed his connection to their justice 6.

His early encounter with Dracule Mihawk exposed the immense gap between his ability and the world’s strongest swordsman. Though Mihawk easily defeated him, Zoro refused to abandon his dream and vowed to surpass him 32.

During the crew’s two-year separation, Zoro sought out Mihawk and repeatedly asked to become his disciple. Personality
