Background

Nami was known in the East Blue as a thief who specialized in stealing from pirates. While fleeing the Buggy Pirates with their treasure and a Grand Line sea chart, she encountered Luffy after he fell into Orange Town from the sky 8.

Recognizing Luffy's strength, Nami manipulated his hunger into helping her steal Buggy's treasure. She later infiltrated Buggy's crew, but hesitated when Buggy ordered her to execute Luffy as proof of loyalty; she stole from pirates, but had never wanted to kill anyone 9 10.

Her work as a thief had been driven by an agreement with Arlong: she would collect 100 million Berry to buy Cocoyasi Village and her own freedom. Arlong secretly arranged for Colonel Nezumi to confiscate her savings before she could complete the deal 39 40. Overwhelmed by the betrayal, Nami asked Moonlight for help, leading the Straw Hats to confront the Arlong Pirates 40 41.
