Background / History
Engagement and First Meeting
Su Bai’s father, mythology scholar Su Zhe, arranged their engagement and gave Cynthia the egg that became her Garchomp as a gift to his future daughter-in-law. Cynthia learned of the engagement roughly a year before Su Bai did 3.
They first meet in the City Sports Field’s VIP viewing lounge. Cynthia initially questions whether Su Bai belongs there, then becomes interested when he repeatedly predicts Qi Shijun’s commands against Lucian and explains the obscure move Body Press. After the exhibition match, Qi Shijun reveals their engagement 2 3.
Cynthia challenges Su Bai to verify his ability. Her Glaceon defeats his Pikachu, but their teamwork earns her respect. She apologizes for doubting him, asks him to address her simply as Cynthia, and gives him an Oran Berry for Pikachu 4.
Dragon Nation Training
While their Pokémon recover, Cynthia discovers that Su Bai can decipher the ancient Unown writing in her notebook. He translates an inscription concerning Dialga, Palkia, and the Adamant Orb. She offers him an assistant researcher position at the Historical Research Institute in Celestic Town, but he chooses to finish his studies first 5.
Cynthia’s visit to the Dragon Nation centers on training at the Origin Temple. Su Bai recognizes the temple’s secret-teaching patterns as altered Unown and helps Garchomp learn Dragon Dance. With her training progressing faster than expected, Cynthia spends the remainder of her planned week sightseeing and growing closer to him 6 9 15.
She returns to Sinnoh after Bertha accepts her final Champion League challenge. In the decisive battle, Spiritomb traps Bertha’s Quagsire and lands Hypnosis, preventing its Unaware Ability from disrupting Garchomp’s setup. Garchomp defeats Hippowdon, Sudowoodo, and Golem; Roserade and Milotic finish Whiscash and Rhyperior. Cynthia is crowned Sinnoh Champion 15 18.
Protecting Su Bai in C City
After Qi Shijun alerts her to Su Bai’s condition, Cynthia travels to C City and finds him exhausted, bloodshot-eyed, and preoccupied with winning the Major League’s Best Individual award. She has Spiritomb put him to sleep, reassures his protective Gengar, and settles him into bed 85.
Disguised, she borrows Gengar and challenges Trainers whose individual scores exceed three points. She uses poisoning to leave their Pokémon unable to compete for two days, offers valuable incentives to secure reluctant opponents’ participation, and sends out Gastrodon against Pokémon that cannot be poisoned. She also pressures Ren Yuan to keep Ren Xiaoyi out of competition; Garchomp restrains him after his Dragapult attacks 85 86.
Cynthia then persuades Su Bai to take two days off and accompanies him around the city. Despite initially presenting the visit as casual travel, she has squeezed it into a busy Champion’s schedule and must soon return to Sinnoh 87 88.
Distortion World Crisis
Cynthia later visits the Dragon Nation with Diantha, intending to warn Ren Yuan against exploiting his position to pressure Su Bai. During the visit, she receives Dreepy and Jangmo-o, then learns about widespread disturbances at the entrances to the Distortion World 117 118.
Concerned that a newly qualified Trainer has entered such a dangerous situation, she joins the search for Su Bai and takes responsibility for searching Reincarnation Town. Once reunited, she reluctantly agrees to wait while he returns to retrieve Qi Shijun and the others, accepting his explanation that Giratina will protect him 118 119 122.
Kanto Masters Tournament
An exhibition match against Unova Champion Alder is moved forward, prompting Cynthia to invite Su Bai to Kanto. She chooses a visit to Professor Oak over shopping in Celadon City, both because she enjoys academic pursuits and because she notices Su Bai’s enthusiasm for meeting him. At Oak’s laboratory, she asks to challenge his veteran Pokémon 124 125 126.
On the way to the Indigo Plateau, Su Bai introduces her to Giant Onix at Miyacha Mountain. Cynthia captures him with Garchomp, then traverses Kanto’s Victory Road with Su Bai as required of visiting Masters Tournament competitors. She defeats ambushing Trainers and protects him from those who insult him 130 131 132.
Against Alder, Lucario defeats Bouffalant through a Focus Sash–Reversal combination. Spiritomb weakens Reuniclus with Pain Split and trades knockouts with Druddigon through Destiny Bond. Giant Onix pressures Volcarona, creating an opening for Garchomp’s Dragon Dance setup and decisive finish. Cynthia wins and declines the evening banquet to leave with Su Bai 134 135.
After celebrating at her Viridian City villa, she promises to remain Sinnoh Champion until Su Bai comes to challenge her. They continue to Celadon City for shopping, and she accompanies him to the Celadon Gym 135 136 138.
Appearance
- Hair: Long, golden-blond hair cascading down her back 3.
- Voice and bearing: An elegant, cool voice with an underlying sweetness; mature poise that becomes more commanding in battle 3 131.
- Early outfit: A sky-blue sleeveless blouse at her first meeting with Su Bai 3.
- Black clothing: Wears fitted black clothes and high heels during her C City visit 85.
- Disguises: Uses hats, masks, sunglasses, and unfamiliar outfits to conceal her identity in public. In Celadon City, she wears a white T-shirt and jeans with her hair tucked under a cap 5 87 136.
Personality
Cynthia is decisive, competitive, and intensely focused once a battle begins. She openly acknowledges both doubt and admiration: after testing Su Bai, she apologizes for underestimating him rather than hiding her changed opinion. She regards composure under pressure as one of the main reasons she became Champion 4 118.
Away from battle, she is playful, affectionate, and less experienced in romance. She teases Su Bai about his faith in her, worries about accepting his help without reciprocating, and admits privately that dating feels more troublesome than battling. Her insistence on paying fairly for supplies reflects her desire for a balanced relationship 35 56 133.
Her protectiveness can become ruthless. To give Su Bai time to recover, she deliberately incapacitates his competitors’ Pokémon and threatens consequences for Ren Yuan’s family if he refuses to cooperate. Nevertheless, she respects Su Bai’s conviction, accepts his explanations when persuaded, and avoids publicizing their engagement because excessive attention could hinder his development 86 87 122 125.

- Attrition and trades: Employs Toxic, Pain Split, and Destiny Bond to weaken opponents or exchange knockouts favorably 86 135.
- Precise move use: Directs Gengar to seize only one of Rapidash’s legs with Psychic, exploiting its charging momentum rather than controlling its entire body 86.
