Background / History

Archon War

Morax defeated numerous gods during the Archon War. In its middle and later stages, he increasingly chose sealing or suppression over killing to prevent defeated gods from leaving behind resentment 3 37.

According to his account, his battle with the Evil Chi devastated the Guili Plains and killed his friend Guizhong, the God of Dust. Enraged, he divided the Chi’s body into five pieces and separately bound or suppressed its spirit, bones, body, soul, and physical form, preventing its rebirth 37.

Governing Liyue

Morax met the newly born god Morpheus, later known as Qiu Bai, during the relocation of the Guili Assembly’s people toward Liyue Harbor. He accepted Qiu Bai’s request for a spar, then introduced him to the adepti and invited him to remain in Liyue as an adeptus lord, explicitly recognizing him as a fellow god of equal standing 1 2 3.

The two subsequently governed Liyue together for decades. Qiu Bai joined Morax at the Rite of Descension and contributed ideas for the nation’s planning and development 8.

During the calamity originating in Khaenri’ah, Morax was away from Liyue. On returning, he learned that Qiu Bai had redeemed the followers of gods he had defeated, who were now helping rebuild the nation 5 7.

Three hundred years before the present-day story, Azhdaha succumbed to Erosion. Morax fought him for three days and nights, defeated him, and sealed him underground 11.

Appearance

  • Human guise: Young and handsome despite his long history; wears golden-ochre clothing with a suit-like upper half, a tailcoat-like lower half, and dragon-pattern decoration 7.
  • Presence: Described as sacred, steady, and majestic, yet approachable; his voice is deep and composed 1.
  • Divine form: Records describe Rex Lapis descending in his true form. The half-qilin dragon presented at his staged assassination is a smaller false body, not his actual remains 11 15.
  • Other incarnations: Zhongli states that Rex Lapis has countless incarnations, though he does not confirm the specific female form Paimon speculates about 33.

Personality

Zhongli is courteous, restrained, and unusually difficult to unsettle. He treats the newly born Qiu Bai as a friend rather than an enemy and helps him understand his power. In modern Liyue, his learning and composure earn recognition from both residents and the Qixing 1 13 26.

His calm exterior conceals grief and guilt. He regrets being unable to arrive sooner during the past calamity, longs for his remaining old friends, and becomes absorbed in memories of Guizhong. His account of the Evil Chi also shows the severity of his anger when a friend is killed 11 26 35 37.

He values Liyue’s traditions but does not insist on perpetual divine rule. Keqing’s willingness to question the gods encourages his retirement plans. He declines Ningguang’s offer of an official post, preferring a leisurely life, while Hu Tao and Paimon complain about his habit of dining at others’ expense 7 13 27 34.

Abilities & Skills

Divine Combat and Geo Power

  • Withstands Qiu Bai’s teleport-assisted punch without retreating, blocking it with both hands before he can raise a shield 2.
  • His clashes with Azhdaha shatter mountains and split the earth 4.
  • Keeps Osial pinned beneath the sea with a stone spear 13.
  • Qiu Bai initially estimates him to be an upper-rank Archon; the system later gives the more precise assessment of half a step from a top-rank Demon God 13 44.

Seals and Barriers

  • Seals Azhdaha underground after defeating him 11.
  • Seals the corrupted area beneath The Chasm to keep Liyue’s people away, then gives Qiu Bai a small Geo meteor that opens the seal 11 12.
  • Creates a sound-isolation barrier before discussing his contract with the Tsaritsa 10.
  • Separately binds and suppresses the Evil Chi’s remains to prevent rebirth 37.

Divine Perception and Communication

  • Detects Qiu Bai’s return to Liyue Harbor and recognizes the growth in his strength 7.
  • Senses Qiu Bai approaching the funeral parlor before Hu Tao can see him 25.
  • Recognizes Qiu Bai’s divine identity in his female form, although the transformation initially surprises him 33 34.
  • Communicates directly with Qiu Bai during the Liyue crisis without exposing their discussion to those nearby 47.

Ritual Knowledge and Strategy

  • Directs preparations for the Rite of Parting, including obtaining fine Cor Lapis, offering fragrant balms, and borrowing Madame Ping’s Cleansing Bell 29 33 36.
  • Uses the staged assassination and ensuing crisis to test whether the Qixing, adepti, and people can protect Liyue without its god 8 26.
  • Keeps Qiu Bai available as a safeguard if the test becomes uncontrollable 26 47.

Erosion

  • States that he was stronger during the Archon War and that his strength would continue growing without Erosion 13.
  • Receives partial repairs from Qiu Bai’s Yang power, rather than curing the condition himself 10 26.
  • Memories triggered by Qiu Bai’s female form cause new cracks in the previously repaired damage; complete recovery remains unconfirmed 35 36 37.

  • Small Geo meteor — Given to Qiu Bai as the key to the seal beneath The Chasm 11.

  • Hu Tao — His employer and director at the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor. She scolds his spending and compares him unfavorably with Qiu Bai’s practical help, but worries about his safety during the crisis 7 10 43 44.
  • Guizhong — Deceased friend whose loss drove his brutal punishment of the Evil Chi. Qiu Bai offers to resurrect her, but Zhongli has not reached a final decision in the supplied chapters 35 37 38.
  • Azhdaha — Old friend whom he defeats and seals after Erosion overwhelms him. Zhongli hopes Qiu Bai can repair Azhdaha’s condition as well 11.
  • Lumine and Paimon — Companions in preparing the Rite of Parting. He guides them through Liyue’s customs while keeping his identity concealed 28 29 33.
  • The Tsaritsa — Contract partner in the planned transfer of his Gnosis 10.
  • Childe / Tartaglia — Financier of the Rite of Parting and an unwitting instrument in Zhongli’s test of Liyue 26 29.
  • Keqing — Her irreverence toward divine authority reassures him that Liyue may be ready for human rule; she does not recognize him as Rex Lapis 13 27.
  • Madame Ping — Friend and custodian of the Cleansing Bell, which he sends Lumine and Paimon to borrow without appearing himself 36.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Retirement and Staged Assassination

After Qiu Bai awakens, Zhongli explains that he intends to step down during the Rite of Descension and test the current generation of the Qixing. Qiu Bai’s return complicates this plan because his reputation rivals Rex Lapis’s, so the two keep their identities concealed 7 8.

The ceremony presents a false dragon body, prompting Ningguang to announce Rex Lapis’s assassination. Zhongli remains alive in his consultant guise while the apparent loss of Liyue’s god exposes the nation’s dependence on divine protection 15 26.

Preparing His Own Farewell

Zhongli recruits Lumine to help arrange the Geo Archon’s Rite of Parting, presenting it as her route to seeing his divine remains. Childe finances the preparations, while Zhongli’s public attention to tradition gives the Qixing time to take control 28 29 30.

During these preparations, Qiu Bai’s female form reminds him of Guizhong. Their private conversation reveals the circumstances of her death and introduces the possibility of her resurrection 35 37 38.

Escalating Liyue Crisis

As conflict between the adepti and Qixing approaches its breaking point, Zhongli privately asks Qiu Bai to act if the situation becomes unmanageable. He advises Lumine to identify the crisis’s “fuse,” then leaves to check on the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor after hearing that its staff are confronting soldiers 47.
