Background / History

The Netherworld Venerable excavated the Corpse Emperor’s original body from the Epoch Burial Pit beneath the Underworld. The corpse had remained imperishable through the ages, despite having an empty Immortal Platform. A Reincarnation Seal formed within it and gave birth to the spirit who would become the Corpse Emperor 43 49.

The Corpse Emperor emerged as far back as the Mythological Era. The Netherworld Venerable personally guided his cultivation, making their relationship almost that of master and disciple. After the Venerable’s departure, the Corpse Emperor and his lineage inherited and expanded his corpse-nurturing research 48 49.

Despite living for millions of years, the Corpse Emperor recovered only scraps of memory from his seal. He remained unable to identify the former owner of his body, and finding that identity became a lasting obsession 43 44.

Appearance

  • Build: A huge, burly man nearly ten feet tall, apparently in the prime of life 43.
  • Face: A curling beard likened to writhing dragons 43.
  • Clothing: Heavy bronze armor 43.
  • Bearing: Sits perfectly upright upon an imperial throne 43.
  • Preserved body: Entirely enclosed within a small mountain of Immortal Source 43.
  • Distinctive aura: His flesh carries an extreme antiquity that contrasts with the state of his newer primordial spirit 43.

Personality

The Corpse Emperor is intensely curious about his origins and the workings of reincarnation. He invited Yuangeng partly because an ancient cultivator might recognize his face, and accepted close examination in the hope of receiving an answer. His desire to understand Reincarnation Seals also drove a research program lasting from the final years of the Mythological Era into the present 43 49.

He is pragmatic when dealing with overwhelming strength. Rather than remain hostile after Yuangeng’s confrontation with the Underworld, he proposed placing the organization under Yuangeng’s command. Over the following five hundred years, his caution developed into sincere deference 45 46 48.

He believes that passing his memories to a spirit born from a second Reincarnation Seal could achieve immortality in another sense. Yuangeng disputes whether such a successor would truly be the same person, but the Corpse Emperor maintains his position 49.

Abilities & Skills

Reincarnation Seal

  • His existing seal nurtured his primordial spirit within an ancient, imperishable body 43.
  • It provides occasional fragments of the body’s past memories, but not enough to reveal its former identity 44.
  • Like other seal-born beings, he had to cultivate anew despite possessing a powerful inherited body 49.
  • A second Reincarnation Seal is his intended posthumous goal, not an attained advancement. He hopes to transmit his memories to the next spirit born within his corpse 49 50.

Corpse-Nurturing Research

  • Continued the Netherworld Venerable’s experiments and expanded their scope through the Corpse Emperor Hall lineage 49.
  • Studied corpses across variables including cultivation, race, sex, constitution, and the Great Dao practiced during life 49.
  • His lineage’s revived cultivators serve as both subordinates and experimental subjects. After roughly a million years of searches and corpse nurturing, the Underworld had gathered three to five seal-bearing Quasi-Emperors 44.
  • Success is rare: attempts to awaken spirits in at least three other imperishable, Extreme Dao-level corpses excavated by the Netherworld Venerable all failed 49.
  • He relays the Venerable’s theory that stronger beings may have slimmer chances of forming a seal, with success requiring exacting conditions of timing, terrain, and resources 49.

Longevity and Preservation

  • Self-slashed before his vitality declined severely, leaving him in better condition than several other surviving Underworld venerables 43 48.
  • Uses Immortal Source to preserve his physical body 43.
  • His insights into longevity minimize lifespan loss, allowing him to remain attentive to Yuangeng’s work for five hundred years while Yama, Rebirth, and Prison-Suppressing returned to slumber 48.
  • His preservation does not remove his mortality; by Chapter 50, he places his principal hopes in rebirth after death 50.

Divine Sense Through His Imperial Weapon

  • Sends his divine sense through his True Dragon-shaped bow while his body remains motionless in Immortal Source 46 48.
  • Uses the bow to accompany others, communicate outside his hall, and transport research materials and scriptures 46 49 50.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • True Dragon-shaped imperial bow — An Extreme Dao Weapon of unidentified material, resembling neither metal nor wood. Its string appears to have been refined from a dragon tendon. The First Judge carries it to escort Yuangeng through the Underworld’s formations 43.
  • Pitch-black arrow — Its arrowhead is forged from dragon pattern black gold; Yuangeng uses it to announce his arrival at the Underworld 43.
  • Bronze armor — Heavy armor worn by his preserved physical body 43.
  • Immortal Source — A mountain-like mass enclosing his entire body 43.
  • Corpse Emperor Hall — A dark palace larger than many stars, housing his imperial throne and serving as the center of his lineage 43.
  • Corpse-nurturing records — Ancient methods and jade slips documenting experiments by the Netherworld Venerable, the Corpse Emperor, and other Underworld members; supplied to Yuangeng for study 49.
  • Netherworld Scripture and Origin Scripture — The Netherworld Venerable’s two fundamental scriptures, provided to Yuangeng on radiant jade pieces 50.

Relationships

  • Netherworld Venerable — Excavated his original corpse and personally guided his cultivation. The Corpse Emperor inherited his research and remains deeply impressed by his attainments in reincarnation 49.
  • Yuangeng / Burial Emperor — Initially invited as a possible source of information about his former identity; later recruited to lead the Underworld. Their alliance develops into an exchange of research and instruction, though they disagree over continuity of identity after rebirth 43 46 49 50.
  • First Judge of Corpse Emperor Hall — A seventh-heaven Quasi-Emperor Xiezhi subordinate who bears a Reincarnation Seal and escorts Yuangeng to his master 43.
  • Prison-Suppressing Venerable, Yama Emperor, and Rebirth Venerable — Long-standing fellow Underworld supreme beings who jointly approve Yuangeng’s leadership 46 47.
  • Heavenly Nether Treasure — A separate Underworld power whose ambitions do not align with his faction. The Corpse Emperor explains its fear of Yuangeng but rejects treating it as equivalent to the Netherworld Venerable 45 46.
  • Undying Heavenly Emperor — A figure whose rise he witnessed. After Yuangeng buries the Emperor’s phoenix corpse, the Corpse Emperor becomes enthusiastic about studying whether it can form a Reincarnation Seal 48 49.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Inviting Yuangeng

  • Summons Yuangeng to determine whether he recognizes the ancient corpse’s face; Yuangeng does not 43.
  • Questions the apparent connection between Yuangeng’s taboo killing method and the Underworld’s cultivation. Yuangeng explains their shared roots in the Burial Domain 44.
  • Discloses the limited memories recovered from his seal; Yuangeng invites him to return if he recalls anything important 44.

Bringing the Burial Emperor to the Underworld

  • Proposes that Yuangeng take command after the Heavenly Nether Treasure flees 45.
  • Reveals the Netherworld soil and the immense burial grounds beneath it as resources that could interest Yuangeng 46.
  • Joins the other three ancient rulers in granting Yuangeng access to the Underworld’s resources and followers, provided he does not obstruct their search for the Netherworld Venerable 46 47.

Studying Death and Rebirth

  • Watches Yuangeng refine the Burial Emperor Hall for five hundred years and witnesses its formation turn extreme death energy into vitality 48.
  • Supplies extensive corpse-nurturing records after learning that Yuangeng intends to nurture a new spirit within the Undying Heavenly Emperor’s corpse 49.
  • Provides the Netherworld Venerable’s scriptures and seeks access to Yuangeng’s Death-and-Life Grand Array. Yuangeng permits him to stay at the Burial Emperor Hall and ask questions, at the cost of expending his remaining lifespan there 50.
