| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Born Mythical Creature associated with the Error Uniqueness | 248 347 377 | Born at the beginning of the Third Epoch. Herabergen states that the Chaos Sea and his father’s protection prevented him from being assimilated when his consciousness emerged. |
| King of Angels of the Marauder pathway | 25 61 76 | One of the Ancient Sun God’s eight Kings of Angels, known as the Angel of Time. Possesses the Uniqueness; later states that he still lacks a Sequence 1 Beyonder characteristic 248. |

Background / History
Amon was born at the beginning of the Third Epoch, also called the Glorious Epoch, as a son of the Ancient Sun God. He served among the eight Kings of Angels surrounding his father’s divine throne, bearing the title Angel of Time 60 76 248.
During the Fourth Epoch, he founded the Amon Family and played every member himself. The family was one of five great families supporting the Tudor Dynasty, alongside Abraham, Antigonus, Jacob, and Tamara. Its surname was taboo even among that era’s high-sequence powers, and its sparse historical records appeared to have been distorted or concealed 60 61.
For thousands of years, Amon refused to recognize the True Creator as his father, believing him to be another being who had inherited the former Sun God’s memories. According to Neph, he stole the light of cities that abandoned his father’s worship, including those converting to the True Creator, leaving them to perish in darkness 77.
Appearance
- Human form: Youthful appearance, black curls, dark eyes, and a crystal monocle over his right eye 47.
- Typical clothing: Black hooded cloak and pointed soft hat, resembling a classical warlock 47.
- Other attire: An avatar wears a black suit and leather shoes during his restaurant meeting with Neph 247.
- Animal identifiers: Animal and insect avatars can display a black or white ring around the right eye. Amon can conceal this feature, but generally enjoys retaining it 246.
- Chosen image: His current appearance was settled through a vote among his avatars, producing an image every Amon approved 377.
Personality
Amon presents himself as an amused, intrusive trickster, but Neph warns that his apparent recklessness conceals long-term planning. Actions that seem undertaken merely for entertainment often become preparations for later schemes. He is difficult to deceive and openly questions the wisdom of lying before a God of Deceit 62 68.
His affection for his father is genuine, yet sincerity does not make him trustworthy. Neph suspects that he uses their father–son bond to pressure Adam into supporting his candidacy for Lord of the Mysteries. His genuine anger also serves as a distraction while he steals and uses her memory-reading ability 248 339.
Neph describes him as lacking both the goodness and the evil of humanity: his priorities are his own goals and games, rather than evil for its own sake. Courage and self-sacrifice are particular shortcomings, central to the explanation she gives for Adam’s reluctance to choose him 261 364.
Abilities & Skills
Theft
- Objects and mystical items: Takes the Blank Canvas directly from Neph and steals a Sequence 4 Black Glove from a restaurant patron 47 247.
- Beyonder abilities: Steals Neph’s ability to inspect memories, concealing the theft beneath pain and an emotionally charged confrontation 339.
- Mystical connections: Severs Kotar’s connections to his marionettes without killing them 353.
- Light: Neph attributes the destruction of apostate cities to his theft of their light 77.
- Divine authority: As a King of Angels possessing a Uniqueness, he theoretically has a chance to steal a True God’s authority, though Neph considers that chance almost zero under ordinary circumstances 61.
Avatars and Parasitization
- Worms of Time: Used as vessels for avatars. Destroyed avatars can leave translucent worms with twelve segments or rings 51 76.
- Multiple forms: Can appear as humans or animals, including ravens; impersonates Neph while she hides in the Pure White Space 48 248 352.
- Host effects: Derrick recalls being dazed and dreamlike for much of his possession, with only occasional lucidity. Parasitized people can also acquire a preference for monocles 246 251.
- Automatic prayer response: Amon confirms that he configured prayers to his true name to trigger parasitization 352.
- Independent thought: Avatars remain controlled by the main body but possess their own personalities and thoughts. Disagreements can be resolved through internal voting 377.
- Control limit: According to Neph, the Amon she knows does not create avatars at Sequence 1 or above, because doing so would weaken his control and affect his state 377.
- Uneven information: An isolated avatar may lack recent knowledge deliberately withheld by the original 339.
Time and Fate
- Time manipulation: Klein reproduces one of the Angel of Time’s abilities through the Staff of Stars, drawing on Pallez’s description 352.
- Stored time: Promises Neph ten thousand years, but directs her to retrieve them from his portrait in the Church of Steam and Machinery’s Holy Cathedral 261.
- Fate disturbances: Neph warns that abnormalities in Sharron’s fate could allow Amon to locate Klein. Wearing a monocle over the right eye likewise creates ripples in fate; wearing one over the left does not 98 114.
Spiritual Restraint and Charm
- Spiritual restraint: Immobilizes Neph’s spirituality, preventing her from reaching the Blank Canvas, and forcibly turns her body toward him 47.
- Empowered speech: His Jotun speech disrupts her concentration with hammer-like force; an angry remark later sends waves through her spirituality 47 261.
- Charm: Attempts to charm Neph after finding that mental powers do not work on her. An icy response from her spirituality restores her clarity 47.
- Oppressive presence: At close range, the difference between his level of existence and Neph’s makes breathing difficult for her 47.
Pathway Knowledge
- Complete pathway knowledge: Claims to know all twenty-two complete pathways and rejects Neph’s unfamiliar apotheosis route as unnecessary to him 47.
- Heavenly Secret Theft: His avatar’s memories contain this Sequence 5 ability, which Neph later reproduces. It steals divine responses for charms or temporary enhancements; greater intelligence in the responding god increases the likelihood of failure 116 120 141.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Crystal Monocle — His defining accessory. An avatar uses a vortex within its lens to contact the main body; another draws the Crystal Heart from it 248 353.
- Moon City’s clock — Given by Amon and reportedly accurate for several thousand years. Neph believes he watches the city through it and attempted to steal her memories through its influence 23 28.
- Portrait in the Holy Cathedral — According to Amon, taken by the Church of Steam and Machinery; contains the ten thousand years promised to Neph 261.
- Crystal Heart — Kotar’s Miracle Invoker Beyonder characteristic, taken after his death and later handled by Amon during his conversation with Adam 353.
- Recliner — Brought out during his visit to Neph and left behind with a Worm of Time 261.
Relationships
- Ancient Sun God / Creator — Father and former sovereign. Amon’s genuine attachment motivates his investigation into Rose Redemption’s role in the Creator’s death 60 76 364.
- Adam — Brother and, as Neph reveals, their father’s divine side. Amon questions why Adam will not disclose the Fool’s location or favor him as Lord of the Mysteries; mockingly calls him his “half-mother” during a later exchange 48 247 353.
- True Creator — Initially rejected as an inheritor of his father’s memories rather than his father himself. Neph’s revelations force Amon to reconsider the Creator’s divided identity 48 77.
- Neph / Pure White — A source of unusual information, a frequent target of intimidation and deception, and an intermittent negotiating partner. He repeatedly invites her to join him or become his blessed; she remains distrustful 47 248 261 339 352.
- Klein / The Fool — Rival contender for Lord of the Mysteries and holder of the Sefirah Castle Amon desires. Neph repeatedly advises Klein to avoid a direct encounter 47 57 68 210.
- Medici — Old acquaintance who calls him “Little Raven.” Amon questions him about the Creator’s murder and offers to remove his seal; Medici later seeks Neph after Amon mentions her 60 154.
- Pallez Zoroast — Long-standing adversary who fears him deeply. Pallez urges Leonard to leave Backlund when Amon arrives, even if the visitor is only an avatar 246.
- Derrick Berg — Possessed by an avatar in the City of Silver. After its purification, Derrick coughs up a Worm of Time 76 251.
- Ais / Flora Jacob — Neph’s transformed Parasite attracts his curiosity and inspires a proposed instruction that Parasites should forget their past and fully live as their hosts 247 248.
- Kotar — Recognizes Amon’s interference when his marionette connections disappear. Amon’s intervention precedes Kotar’s death and the theft of his Miracle Invoker characteristic 353.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Moon City Encounters
- Neph detects Amon’s influence around the city’s clock and reports a suspected attempt to steal her memories to the True Creator 23 28.
- Amon confronts her directly, takes and examines the Blank Canvas, tests her defenses, and returns the Sefirah after declaring that only Sefirah Castle interests him 47.
- Neph reveals that Adam is his father’s divine side, then retreats into the Blank Canvas. Amon remains outside, impersonating her when Nim arrives 48.
- Neph subsequently envelops an avatar and its connection to the main body with her spirituality. The connection vanishes, and the avatar collapses into a Worm of Time 51.
Investigating His Father and the Fool
- Amon questions Medici about Rose Redemption and learns that Sasrir claimed killing the corrupted Creator would allow him to revive through prayer 60.
- The City of Silver incident and the aura of Sefirah Castle draw his attention to the Fool. Neph’s claim that the Fool is “a part” of his father temporarily confuses him 62 67.
- He later confronts Neph over the supposed third self, torments her, and demands that she wear a monocle before Adam while repeating, “This is a necessary sacrifice.” She delivers the message 192 209.
Backlund Negotiations
- Amon searches Backlund for Pure White, prompting warnings to Klein and Leonard to leave the city 246.
- He and Neph fail to agree on an exchange for ten thousand years. He proposes information about a missing Sequence 1 characteristic as payment 248.
- In a later visit, he offers the years in return for an explanation of Adam’s preference. Neph identifies his lack of humanity, courage, and self-sacrifice, while suggesting that Adam may also fear losing him to the former Lord of the Mysteries’ awakening 261.
Isolated Avatar and Kotar
- In a crystal treasure vault, an uninformed avatar challenges Neph’s fabricated history. Their exchange leads her to recognize an earlier theft of her memory-reading ability 339.
- Klein uses a prayer to Amon to draw Kotar’s attention and locate him. Amon acknowledges the ingenuity of the tactic while complaining about restraining his urge to tamper with Sefirah Castle 352.
- Amon interferes with Kotar’s escape and takes his Miracle Invoker characteristic. Neph freezes the accompanying avatar into a Worm of Time, but it refuses to surrender the characteristic because it is elsewhere 353.
- Adam later persuades Amon to hand over the painting designated 0-13, telling him, “You are the light when the apocalypse comes” 354.
Honorific Name
“The clock-hand that tampers with time;
The shadow that roams across fate;
The embodiment of deceit and trickery...” 352
- Praying to Amon is hazardous: his configured automatic response is to parasitize the petitioner 352.
