Background / History

Fugaku leads the Uchiha after a costly campaign in which the clan held off Kirigakure’s forces. While his clansmen celebrate their achievements, he regrets both their losses and Shisui’s apparent allegiance to Hiruzen Sarutobi. He sees the village leadership’s influence over the clan’s outstanding young ninja as a serious setback 2.

Hiruzen sends him a public commendation through Shisui, but Fugaku privately considers words of praise inadequate compensation for the clan’s devastating casualties. He believes Hiruzen understands what would ease Uchiha unrest and improve relations with the village, yet refuses to provide it 2.

The transmigrated Shisui already intends to replace him. This judgment rests on Shisui’s foreknowledge of the Uchiha’s destruction and his belief that Fugaku would prioritize his immediate family over the clan—not on a massacre occurring within the supplied chapters 1 2.

He also deliberately hides his Mangekyō Sharingan, abandoning a confrontation rather than exposing the strength he has concealed 20 29.

His protectiveness toward Itachi is more immediate. He kills a Root assassin for threatening his child and questions the mysterious Wood Release user who helped Itachi, suspecting that the stranger might be an asset of Hiruzen or Danzō 19 20.

Hiruzen places the Uchiha and Military Police Force under Danzō’s command, and Danzō orders them to stay put. After Minato and Kushina die sealing the Nine-Tails, Fugaku retrieves Naruto on Shisui’s instructions and orders the battlefield cleared. Wounded but publicly praised, he later refuses Hiruzen access to the child, explaining that Naruto is asleep beside Sasuke 34 36.

Once Hiruzen and Danzō withdraw, Fugaku reports to Shisui and receives orders to guard both infants while Shisui intercepts a force probing the clan’s defenses 37.

Cemetery Confrontation and Danzō’s Exposure
