Background / History

Appointment as Fourth Hokage

Minato returned to Konoha as Hiruzen Sarutobi’s chosen successor and won the selection for Fourth Hokage. His appointment defeated Orochimaru’s candidacy, which Shimura Danzō had supported. Minato already possessed a celebrated reputation for speed: villagers compared his wartime fame with that of Body Flicker Shisui 7 8.

At Hiruzen’s request, Minato summoned Shisui Uchiha to assess his strength. An ambush with projectiles in the Hokage Office developed into an outdoor spar, where Minato’s Flying Thunder God attacks prompted Shisui to reveal his Mangekyō Sharingan and Susanoo 7 8 9.

The test escalated until Minato’s signature attack collided with Shisui’s Spiral Sword. Their fighting cracked Hokage Rock and buried roughly a dozen village shops. Minato stopped the assessment when Shisui prepared another powerful strike, then offered him command of the Anbu. When Shisui declined, Minato respected his decision and left the position open 10 11.

Hokage Duties and the Masked Intruder

Minato handled village reports and mission assignments while continuing to cooperate with Hiruzen. When Teacher Chen emerged from seclusion, Minato initially intended to investigate personally but accepted Hiruzen’s offer to meet his old friend. He later assigned Shisui to investigate unusual chakra fluctuations near Amegakure; limited information prevented the mission from receiving a rank, and the other Anbu were injured or occupied elsewhere 17 21.

When the masked Obito Uchiha infiltrated Konoha, Minato intervened in his confrontation with Shisui. He ordered Shisui to notify Hiruzen and fought the intruder, who escaped through Kamui. Minato recognized the combination of a Mangekyō Sharingan and space-time ninjutsu, but could not identify the attacker 26.

Minato’s growing public support undermined Hiruzen’s expectation that he could retain control from behind the scenes. Nine-Tails Incident and Death

During the rampage, Minato pursued Obito while the Uchiha and Shisui defended the village. Unable to prolong the pursuit, he risked a close-range attack and used Flying Thunder God Second Step to strike Obito from behind. Obito survived and escaped to the Nine-Tails through Kamui 33.

Minato reached the main battlefield after Shisui, acting as Senju Ye, drove Obito away. He asked the supposed disciple of the First Hokage to restrain the Nine-Tails and stand guard while he performed the Reaper Death Seal 34.

Although Minato acknowledged that other sealing techniques could resolve the immediate crisis, he chose to give Naruto the strength to face the masked attacker’s return and the upheaval foretold by Jiraiya. He also believed Kushina could not survive after her seal had been broken and intended to die alongside her 34.

Before dying, Minato thanked the Uchiha for the casualties they had suffered protecting Konoha. He and Kushina died at the sealing site, leaving their newborn son behind. At Senju Ye’s instruction, Uchiha Fugaku carried Naruto back to the village 34.

Funeral and Aftermath

Minato’s death left the Hokage position vacant and Naruto’s custody contested. Hiruzen planned to use his ties to Minato and Jiraiya to claim the child at the funeral, while Danzō pursued his own custody scheme. Minato’s public recognition of the Uchiha’s sacrifice also strengthened the clan’s standing after the attack 35 38.

At the funeral, Danzō revealed that the Nine-Tails remained sealed inside Naruto, provoking hostility toward the infant. Senju Ye later compelled Hiruzen to confirm Naruto’s parentage publicly. The villagers and shinobi apologized to Naruto and his parents after being confronted over their treatment of the heroes’ child 39 43.

Personality

Minato is friendly and encouraging, frequently greeting others with a sunny smile. He praises Shisui’s skill and accepts his refusal to lead the Anbu without coercion. In combat, however, his curiosity and enthusiasm lead him to push the assessment much further than its original setting could safely accommodate 7 8 10 11.

He treats protecting Konoha as his duty and openly acknowledges the Uchiha’s contribution to its defense. His final decision combines concern for the village’s future, faith in Naruto, and attachment to Kushina. He believes his son will grow into a proud man and expects that being a hero’s child will spare him an especially difficult life 26 34.
