Background / History

Konoha childhood and presumed death

Obito ranked at the bottom of his class, leading other Uchiha to consider him a disgrace with little prospect of developing a powerful Sharingan. Becoming Minato Namikaze’s student and being recognized as a war hero after his presumed death improved his reputation 200.

He served alongside Kakashi and Rin Nohara. Their friendship helped Kakashi recover from the shadow of his father’s suicide, and Obito’s guidance helped preserve Kakashi’s commitment to his ninja way. Before his presumed death, Obito entrusted a Sharingan to Kakashi; the Uchiha clan head respected his wishes 18 33 620.

Konoha officially regarded Obito as dead. His name remained on a gravestone in the Heroes’ Cemetery, beside Rin’s, even after his survival became known to his former comrades 200 620.

Madara’s intervention and Rin’s death

Madara saved Obito’s life and manipulated the events that led to Rin becoming the Three-Tails jinchūriki and dying when Kakashi pierced her heart. Obito eventually understood that these events had been Madara’s trap, but that knowledge did not undo his hatred of the world that had taken Rin from him 595 608.

After Madara’s death, Obito adopted his identity and continued the Eye of the Moon Plan. He regarded his former, village-loving self as already dead, leaving only Tobi or “Madara Uchiha” to pursue a replacement for the existing world 42 178 631.

His retaliation included controlling the Fourth Mizukage and imposing an even harsher Blood Mist Policy. This worsened Kirigakure’s internal strife without restoring Rin 178 608.

Appearance

  • Concealed face: Usually wears a mask, maintaining separation between his identity as Obito and his public identities as Tobi or Madara 42 178.
  • Early attire: A Spiral Mask and Akatsuki’s red-cloud robe 398.
  • Later attire: Replaces the Spiral Mask with a white mask bearing a Rinnegan pattern and stops wearing the red-cloud robe 592.
  • Summit-era equipment: Wears purple robes and carries the Uchiha Gunbai on his back 630.
  • Modified body: Half of his body consists of transplanted White Zetsu tissue 241.
  • Additional eye: Conceals the transplanted Rinnegan beneath his collar while retaining both Kamui eyes 583 595.

Personality

Obito was once cheerful, optimistic, attached to his village, and protective of his comrades. Kakashi finds his later hostility toward the Five Great Shinobi Villages difficult to reconcile with the boy he remembers 620.

As the Masked Man, he is manipulative and willing to exploit emotional bonds. He considers killing Zou Hyuga to drive Oto toward a stronger Sharingan, treats Nagato as a pawn, and recruits Akatsuki members partly to build a following loyal to himself rather than the organization’s leader 178 245 250 251.

His confidence rests heavily on his eyes and mobility. He enjoys demonstrating his superiority, but remains cautious around unknown Mangekyō abilities and retreats when Oto or Shisui threatens his advantages 178 332 460 464.

The Tobi persona is deliberately unserious: he smiles, apologizes, and performs ridiculous poses to entertain Akatsuki members after they rescue him. Orochimaru remains unconvinced by this outward behavior 246.

Despite rejecting his former life, Obito retains attachment to Kakashi. He regrets reclaiming his gift, provides a replacement Sharingan rather than leaving Kakashi blind, and repeatedly holds back during their fights. His hatred concerns the world that caused Rin’s death, not merely his inability to see her again 251 463 620 630 631.

Abilities & Skills

Kamui

Obito’s Mangekyō Sharingan ability connects him to a separate dimension containing floating white stone blocks. It is the central source of his battlefield mobility and evasiveness 180 190.

  • Dimensional transport: Moves himself, other people, objects, and intelligence into the Kamui Dimension 42 181 251.
  • Infiltration: Bypasses Konoha’s sensory barrier and enters guarded locations without alerting their defenders 178 518.
  • Intangibility: Lets taijutsu and ninjutsu pass through him; while intangible, he can neither attack nor be struck normally 181 398.
  • Ranged distortion: Reclaiming his left eye enables long-range Kamui attacks, though sufficiently fast targets can evade them 242 331.
  • Vulnerable activation: Ranged absorption and teleportation require an opening in which he becomes tangible. Coordinated opponents repeatedly exploit this transition 242 459.
  • Time limit: Continuous intangibility has a maximum duration, which Tobirama identifies during their battle 595.
  • Direct counter: Oto’s dojutsu can interrupt Kamui, preventing both attacks and escape 243 398.
  • Jinchūriki limitation: Kamui’s space-time movement stops working after he becomes the Ten-Tails jinchūriki 662.

Sharingan and Genjutsu

  • Jinchūriki control: Subjugates the Three-Tails inside the Fourth Mizukage, then controls the Mizukage’s mind. His victim retains his memories and awareness but cannot resist 429.
  • Ocular-power ceiling: Cannot control a second jinchūriki simultaneously during the attempt to break Kakashi’s encirclement with Utakata 340.
  • Genjutsu resistance: His Mangekyō Sharingan, White Zetsu support, and transplanted Rinnegan help him resist powerful ocular genjutsu, but do not make him immune 613 615 617.
  • Limited Tsukuyomi: Uses it against the reanimated First Hokage at an enormous cost. The expenditure drains supporting White Zetsu, damages Obito’s life force, and leaves him asleep for a week 596 608.

Wood Release

Obito’s Wood Release can absorb chakra and is substantially stronger than Yamato’s in its resistance to Fire Release. It remains far below Hashirama’s Wood Release 181 521.

  • Wooden Advent: Fires sharp wooden spikes capable of wounding targets and draining their chakra 180 398.
  • Hellish Rampage Jutsu: Produces spreading, thorn-covered trees that continue advancing even while burning 181.
  • Wood Formation Wall: Raises a barrier to obstruct an opponent’s attack or line of sight 243.
  • Wood Clones: Creates convincing substitutes; one helps him evade a coordinated attempt to kill him 243.
  • Restraint: Uses vines and a large tree to immobilize the reanimated Tobirama while preparing a sealing technique 520.

White Zetsu Augmentation

  • Enhanced ocular power: His transplanted tissue makes his Mangekyō power considerably stronger than that of an ordinary wielder 241.
  • Recovery: Half-White Zetsu physiology allows even fatal injuries to heal given time 617.
  • Battlefield endurance: White Zetsu cells help him retain fighting strength after senjutsu chakra leaves half his body numb 267.
  • Remaining limits: Physical regeneration does not prevent ocular exhaustion or the life-force damage caused by Limited Tsukuyomi 608 617.

Susanoo

Reclaiming his second eye enables Obito to use Susanoo alongside Kamui 211.

  • Documented form: A sky-blue, second-stage Half-Body Susanoo whose fist breaks through Yamato’s wooden wall 459.
  • Strengths: Provides increased defense and destructive power, particularly against tailed beasts and large summons 460.
  • Trade-offs: Reduces speed and responsiveness; sustained explosive attacks consume its chakra rapidly 460 520.
  • Upper limit: Hashirama’s Wood Release overwhelms a Susanoo standing more than ten meters tall 521.

Izanagi

  • Reality alteration: Can rewrite reality for a duration linked to the user’s strength 208.
  • Survival technique: Learned through Madara’s legacy and used several times to escape death 465.
  • Restraint weakness: Cannot reliably solve prolonged captivity if an opponent prevents a fatal injury and waits for its duration to expire 522.

Rinnegan and Reanimation

  • Rinnegan sensing: Locates Orochimaru and senses the Nine-Tails in two separate locations 593 647.
  • Six Paths of Pain: Uses jinchūriki corpses as Pain bodies, though Hashirama destroys most of them in battle 583 595.
  • Impure World Reincarnation: Masters reanimation and prepares an army using collected shinobi remains, including former jinchūriki and Kage-level ninja 608.
  • Powerful reanimations: Controls the reanimated Hashirama and brings back Madara, although he remains uncertain how secure his control over Madara truly is 628 645.
  • Rinne Rebirth: Performs the technique under Black Zetsu’s control, restoring Madara’s living body against Obito’s wishes 667 668.

Ten-Tails Jinchūriki Powers

  • Vast chakra: Possesses dozens of times more chakra than Nagato had as a Rinnegan wielder 668.
  • Truth-Seeking Orbs: Nullify ninjutsu and combine every nature transformation. Senjutsu and space-time ninjutsu can counter them 662 668.
  • Amenonuhoko Sword: Forms the weapon from Truth-Seeking Orbs after suppressing the Ten-Tails’ consciousness 663.
  • Rapid healing: Repairs damaged internal organs shortly after being struck by Minato’s Rasengan 663.
  • Mental instability: Initially struggles as the Ten-Tails devours his sense of self; losing control increases his defenses and destructive power but leaves him unable to dodge intelligently 663.
  • Incomplete objective: Still needs a more complete Ten-Tails and a full pair of Rinnegan to carry out Infinite Tsukuyomi 608 662.

Other Combat Skills

  • Nintaijutsu: Individually comparable to Oto and Shisui, though fighting both together places him at a disadvantage 181.
  • Uchiha-style taijutsu: His trained fighting style allows Oto to recognize him as someone raised and instructed within the clan 181.
  • Fire Release: Uses Blast Wave Wild Dance and an enormous Great Fireball Technique 241 521.
  • Sealing jutsu: Begins a sealing technique against the reanimated Tobirama after learning that ordinary attacks cannot defeat him 520.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Chain — Swings it during his close-range assault on Oto 180.
  • Masks — Uses the Spiral Mask and later a white Rinnegan-patterned mask to conceal his identity 398 592.
  • Uchiha Gunbai — Reflects Tobirama’s explosive-tag blasts back at him; later carried on Obito’s back 595 630.
  • Demonic Statue of the Outer Path — Keeps it within the Kamui Dimension during preparations for the Ten-Tails’ revival 647.
  • Kamui storage — Stores intelligence, defeated Pain bodies, and Madara’s remains in his dimension 251 595 608.
  • Cursed Seal in his heart — A contingency implanted by Madara; Obito questions whether it is the only safeguard left inside him 595.

Relationships

  • Kakashi Hatake — Former teammate and best friend. Obito’s guidance and eye helped sustain Kakashi’s ninja way; their later battles expose lingering attachment beneath Obito’s hostility 33 460 620 630.
  • Rin Nohara — Former teammate whose death drives his rejection of the existing world. He wants to create a new world for her rather than merely reanimate her 608 631.
  • Minato Namikaze — Former teacher and opponent during the Nine-Tails’ attack. Obito seeks revenge for that defeat; Minato feels more guilt than hatred but ultimately recognizes him as an enemy 538 600 620.
  • Madara Uchiha — Rescuer, manipulator, and source of his assumed identity. Obito shares his ultimate plan but resists being controlled, eventually reanimating him before being forced to restore him fully to life 608 652 668.
  • Black Zetsu — Adviser and conspirator who ultimately possesses Obito to perform Rinne Rebirth. Later appeals to Obito’s concern for Rin to persuade him to resist Zou 583 667 669.
  • White Zetsu — Bodily augmentation, intelligence network, battlefield support, and source of supplementary chakra 241 293 596.
  • Nagato / Pain — Akatsuki partner whom Obito regards as a pawn. Their mutual distrust becomes open rivalry, followed by Obito’s ambush to steal a Rinnegan 245 250 465 554.
  • Konan — Knows the connection between Tobi and the self-proclaimed Madara. Her intervention prevents Obito from taking Nagato’s second Rinnegan during his ambush 225 554.
  • Oto Uchiha — Intended recruit and persistent enemy. Her dojutsu directly counters his reliance on Mangekyō abilities 178 398 645.
  • Shisui Uchiha — Opponent whose undisclosed dojutsu repeatedly makes Obito cautious about committing to a fight 242 332.
  • Zou Hyuga — Enemy whom Obito believes is controlled by Moryo. Attempts to manipulate or kill him eventually lead to Obito being pinned by Zou’s black rods 242 245 668.
  • Orochimaru — Akatsuki associate turned attacker. Their conflict exposes Obito’s impersonation of Madara and pushes him to strengthen his arsenal 500 521 593.
