Background / History
Konoha and Root
Orochimaru trained under the Third Hokage alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade. Although reserved and poor at expressing emotion, he once showed concern for his teammates through his actions. His pursuit of ninjutsu eventually led him to experiment on village ninja and civilians, continuing even after his teacher explicitly forbade it 87 297.
He served as a commander during the fighting against Sunagakure and established experimental grounds in the Land of Wind. Within Konoha, he joined Root and worked with Danzo on Hashirama-cell experiments. Danzo supplied funding, connections, and cheaper access to materials, but Orochimaru also financed research by selling experimental results on the black market 68 76 91.
His failed candidacy for Fourth Hokage deepened his dissatisfaction with Konoha. He did not particularly want the office itself; he resented the Third’s handling of the selection and believed his achievements and seniority were at least equal to Minato’s 68.
Wood Release Dispute and Defection
The appearance of a child who could use Wood Release shattered Orochimaru’s partnership with Danzo. Both tried to claim the survivor of their experiments, and their confrontation escalated into battle. Danzo caught Orochimaru with a concealed Sharingan, seriously wounded him, and took the child. Orochimaru nevertheless recovered flesh samples through his snakes 77 79 82.
Realizing that the disturbance would expose his human experiments, Orochimaru decided to leave Konoha. He believed his status would spare him execution, but regarded supervised research as worse than death. Danzo then presented the village leadership with an account that concealed their partnership, and the Third proposed designating Orochimaru an S-rank rogue ninja 82.
Before escaping, Orochimaru remained in the village to approach Zou Hyuga and Oto Uchiha. Their encounter became a fight involving Kakashi and incoming ANBU reinforcements. Zou’s palm strike left a chakra-disrupting injury that took months to recover from 84 85 86 138.
The Third intercepted him but ultimately allowed him to leave. Reports that Orochimaru had wounded his teacher did not reflect the Third’s decision to let him escape. Jiraiya subsequently pursued him across the Land of Fire, repeatedly trying to bring him home 87 91.
Akatsuki and Independent Research
Orochimaru joined Akatsuki after being easily defeated by its leader’s eyes. He was partnered with Sasori, but withheld intelligence and continued pursuing his own research rather than accepting lasting subordination 145.
The pair hunted bloodline abilities in Kirigakure and went to the Kaguya Clan compound after learning its location. Orochimaru also gathered bloodline-bearing orphans, eventually identifying Kimimaro and Jugo as especially valuable among his followers 160 280.
He recruited his former classmate Hiruko for Akatsuki and pursued exchanges involving the Chimera Technique and modified summoning beasts. When Zou demanded payment for Hiruko’s release, Orochimaru contributed chakra metal worth seven million, then claimed that he had spent twenty-seven million and assured Hiruko that Akatsuki would reimburse the expense 228 231 251.
Despite participating in Akatsuki’s attack on Sunagakure, he secretly contacted Rasa and warned him of danger. He presented revenge against Konoha as his motive while privately considering Sunagakure a useful future ally after leaving Akatsuki 258 261 280.
Otogakure and the Break with Akatsuki
Orochimaru established Otogakure around followers and descendants of bloodline-limit users. Its inhabitants also served as experimental subjects. Secret cooperation with Rasa and development of the Land of Wind’s oil and gas resources helped fund both the village and his research 489.
He brought Shinnō into cooperation with Akatsuki, promising support for the Zero-Tails project. Their subsequent exchanges included medical forbidden techniques and natural-energy research. During an assault on the Fire Temple, Orochimaru observed Shinnō fighting Chiriku to study their methods 356 375.
Orochimaru, Shinnō, and Oyashiro En later ambushed Obito. Orochimaru attempted to take both Mangekyō Sharingan, but Obito’s Izanagi overturned the apparent success, and genjutsu deceived Orochimaru about the face beneath the mask. The attackers escaped with the Five-Tails 500.
After his defection from Akatsuki, Obito attacked Otogakure to recover Han and take revenge. Orochimaru initially stayed hidden, aware that another genjutsu could incapacitate him. He then used reanimated Hokage to oppose the attack, successfully deploying Hashirama for the first time 504 519 520 521.
Otogakure was ultimately destroyed, forcing Orochimaru to seek refuge in Sunagakure. Disguised as a female ninja, he accompanied Rasa’s forces during preparations for the joint assault on Amegakure, privately intending to seize Nagato’s Rinnegan 526 527 528.
Death, Return, and the Ōtsutsuki Threat
While sheltering in Sunagakure, Orochimaru trained Gaara in the Cursed Seal of Heaven. He preferred this arrangement to refuge in Konoha or Kirigakure because Sunagakure’s weakness gave him a chance to negotiate as an equal rather than live under another faction’s control 592 593.
Obito eventually tracked him down and attacked through the Rinnegan-bearing Han. Manda refused to fight the Rinnegan, leaving Orochimaru to summon the First and Second Hokage. Obito nevertheless trapped him in genjutsu and pinned him with black rods 593 594.
Orochimaru later resurfaced through Kabuto’s Cursed Seal and confirmed that “Madara Uchiha” had killed him. In his weakened condition, he accepted recruitment into Akatsuki under Zou Hyuga and transferred into a White Zetsu body. Zou then informed him that their greater enemy was the Sage of Six Paths’ own kin 598 599.
He accompanied Tobirama to a meeting with the Third, Jiraiya, and Tsunade, but declined his teacher’s invitation to return to Konoha. He also denied arranging the meeting or acting out of a desire to save the village 603.
Orochimaru supported investigating the Ōtsutsuki because of their research value. During the later conflict with Madara and the unstable Ten-Tails, he arrived with masked companions and helped Oto’s injured group withdraw unnoticed 634 653 666.
Appearance
- Pale complexion and serpentine eyes: His pale face and snake-like gaze are recurring identifying features 68 317 519.
- Long, forked tongue: Frequently flicks out his tongue while observing others or expressing interest 221 262 653.
- Scaled body: Smooth scales are exposed when Obito’s Wood Release tears through his robe 500.
- Variable form: Can stretch his neck, leave behind shed snakeskin, and change vessels through forbidden techniques 265 368 599.
- Disguises: Appears as a Sand ninja during secret contact with Rasa and later conceals himself as a female ninja 280 526.
Personality
Orochimaru values unrestricted research above loyalty, reputation, or conventional morality. His pursuit of immortality is ultimately a means of exploring the limits of ninjutsu, not merely avoiding death. He accepts human experimentation and treats unusual bodies, bloodlines, and even the Ōtsutsuki as research opportunities 82 489 634.
He is secretive, calculating, and unwilling to remain subordinate for long. He conceals discoveries from Akatsuki, maintains contacts across opposing factions, and carefully protects his most valuable techniques. His dealings with Danzo and Rasa show a preference for useful arrangements over trust 145 280 489 502 592.
His confidence does not prevent tactical retreat. He avoids battles against opponents he cannot safely handle, particularly those whose genjutsu can exploit his weakened soul. Against the Fourth Raikage and Killer B, he prioritizes escape while allowing his companions’ abilities to be tested 355 368 519.
His followers’ devotion is not entirely one-sided. Anko receives personal instruction rather than being treated as an ordinary subordinate, and Otogakure’s destruction angers him after years spent building it. Nevertheless, his ambitions also lead him to regard Kimimaro as a future vessel and to ask followers to sacrifice themselves 15 317 519.
Abilities & Skills
Forbidden-Technique Research
Orochimaru’s greatest threat is his breadth of research rather than overwhelming direct combat power 139 593.
- Conducts Hashirama-cell, Wood Release, bloodline, natural-energy, and soul-related investigations 76 251 489.
- Pursues several experimental programs simultaneously; Shinnō judges his natural-energy research to be years ahead of his own 504.
- Exchanges techniques to obtain insights from related fields, including Hiruko’s modifications and Shinnō’s medical methods 251 375.
- Does not possess a soul-strengthening technique when Danzo requests one, despite planning to exploit the request 489.
Living Corpse Reincarnation
Allows Orochimaru to replace his body, supporting his pursuit of an everlasting soul 317 598.
- Requires a three-year cooldown between uses 317.
- Makes a vessel’s bloodline and health important; Kimimaro’s Shikotsumyaku attracts him, but the boy’s bloodline disease diminishes his suitability 317 489.
- Reduces his combat strength and contributes to weakened resistance to genjutsu 225 323 519.
- Works alongside Cursed Seal-based survival methods, allowing his consciousness to return after his active body is killed 598.
Cursed Seals and Natural Energy
His seals derive from research into Jugo and function as a degraded form of Sage Mode rather than proof that Orochimaru has mastered senjutsu himself 319 413.
- Boost recipients’ chakra, speed, and strength; Kimimaro demonstrates advanced use in battle 251 519.
- Enable control over Han and his Five-Tails transformation 498 502.
- Provide a means for Orochimaru’s resurrection through a marked host 598.
- Include the Cursed Seal of Heaven, which he teaches Gaara to develop 593.
- Carry side effects, and his own use of Living Corpse Reincarnation and Cursed Seals leaves his soul weaker than that of a normal Kage-level fighter 280 519.
Impure World Reincarnation
Orochimaru refines Tobirama’s forbidden technique to compensate for the decline caused by Living Corpse Reincarnation 225 323.
- Summons dead ninja, including the First and Second Hokage, using prepared biological samples and sacrifices 323 521 607.
- Reanimated fighters possess regenerating bodies and nearly inexhaustible chakra 324.
- The materials used affect how closely a summon approaches its original strength 521.
- Control is not guaranteed: Oto interrupts his control talismans, and Orochimaru fears that Hashirama’s power may exceed his ability to restrain him 323 329 521.
- An attempt to summon the Fourth Hokage fails because his soul does not respond; a later attempt to reanimate Tobirama also fails 323 607.
Snake Techniques and Summoning
Orochimaru uses snakes for offense, reconnaissance, storage, substitution, and escape 82 85 229 231 270.
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands / Multiple Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Launches venomous snakes from his sleeves or across the battlefield 85 220.
- Ten Thousand Snake Formation: Overwhelms opponents with large numbers of snakes; can briefly delay even Killer B 261 368.
- Orochimaru-style substitution: Replaces a struck body with snakes or discarded snakeskin 229 265 368.
- Reverse Summoning: Escapes after Zou strikes him with senjutsu chakra 270.
- Manda: Summons the giant snake, who demands sacrifices and can refuse dangerous opponents 593.
- Triple Rashomon: Raises three enormous defensive gates capable of blocking powerful fire attacks 139.
- Eight Branches Technique: Considers testing it against Obito’s Susanoo; its actual deployment is not shown in that encounter 519.
Swordsmanship and Conventional Ninjutsu
- Wields the Kusanagi Sword, retrieving it from his mouth during combat 85 261.
- Uses Shadow Clones, a mud-bodied decoy, earth walls, Body Flicker, and the Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique 15 79 85 86.
- Combines snakes with explosive tags and uses poison to incapacitate enemy ninja 139 261.
- His swordsmanship is inferior to Killer B’s; Kusanagi’s sharpness and his flexible body help him avoid serious injury 368.
Weaknesses
- High-level genjutsu: Despite earlier countermeasures, Oto’s Mangekyō and Obito’s ocular techniques repeatedly incapacitate him 139 323 500 594.
- Soul damage: His immortality methods weaken his soul and reduce his ability to resist genjutsu 519.
- Senjutsu-infused attacks: Zou’s chakra-disrupting strike resists healing and takes months to recover from 86 138.
- Direct combat limitations: Opponents such as the Third Hokage, the A–B duo, and Obito can exceed his conventional fighting ability, making preparation and forbidden techniques essential 87 355 368 593.
