Background / History

Discovering Ling Feng

Hiruzen first appears handling documents with Minato Namikaze at his side. He has already promised to arrange for Minato to succeed him, but has given no definite timetable. After discussing a captured spy, he decides to visit the Ninja Academy without notifying its staff 9.

At the Academy, Hiruzen watches Ling Feng fight his son, Asuma. Despite Ling Feng’s mediocre school record, Hiruzen recognizes the confidence that unsettles Asuma and is impressed when the boy evades four kunai with three casual steps. His interest turns to alarm when Ling Feng attaches twenty explosive tags to Asuma; Minato intervenes to rescue him 10 11.

Hiruzen subsequently receives an elite ANBU operative’s report on Ling Feng and arranges his graduation certificate and forehead protector. Their ensuing conversation becomes an exchange of veiled warnings: Hiruzen raises the danger posed by the Uchiha Clan, while Ling Feng hints at his knowledge of Konoha’s plans to suppress it. Following the deaths of ten Uchiha members, Hiruzen summons Ling Feng after speaking with the clan head. He hopes that protecting Ling Feng and giving him meaningful village responsibilities will foster loyalty. When Minato asks what happens if Ling Feng becomes even harder to control than the clans, Hiruzen can only hope that Konoha’s support will keep the boy’s allegiance 44.

He appoints Ling Feng as an Academy teaching assistant to improve Konoha’s Chunin Ninja Exam results. After reviewing the boy’s ninety-day training program, Hiruzen acknowledges that he underestimated him.
