Background / History
Rivalry with Ling Feng
Asuma's position as the Third Hokage's son earns him considerable deference in Konoha, but Ling Feng refuses to treat him differently. Jealous of the attention Ling Feng receives from Kurenai Yuhi, Asuma challenges him to a one-on-one fight after the girls leave the classroom. Obito warns that fighting at school could result in discipline and embarrass their families, so Ling Feng proposes settling the challenge during the following day's outing 2.
Asuma persuades Obito to support him by arguing that both Kurenai and Rin Nohara will fall in love with Ling Feng if they do nothing. Obito encourages Asuma to fight rather than volunteering to participate himself 2.
The Classmates' Outing
Asuma arrives late with Obito, Kakashi, and Might Guy. He mocks Ling Feng for bringing no lunch, then offers Kurenai his own deluxe lunchbox in an unsuccessful attempt to attract her attention. His ridicule continues when Ling Feng catches fish, but turns to disbelief when Ling Feng cooks them using Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique 3 4.
After lunch, Asuma pretends to have forgotten his challenge. When Ling Feng reminds him in front of everyone, Kurenai and Rin criticize the proposed fight, and Asuma leaves with Obito. Their early departure means they do not witness Ling Feng's later techniques; they continue to believe the Great Fireball Technique is his only notable ninjutsu 5 11.
Academy Combat Test
Asuma and Obito later confront Ling Feng outside his home with a group of followers. Asuma insists that only the Uchiha Clan knows the “real” Great Fireball Technique, while Obito promises to demonstrate it during the school's practical combat test. At the training ground, Ling Feng publicly selects Asuma as his opponent, and the instructor confirms their pairing 8 9.
During the match, Asuma creates a shadow clone and attacks with kunai, all of which Ling Feng avoids. Unwilling to concede while Kurenai watches, he throws eight more kunai fitted with explosive tags. These are prohibited equipment for an Academy student: carrying them requires at least Chunin rank and village permission. Hiruzen, observing with Minato Namikaze, is furious at his son's conduct 10 11.
Ling Feng survives by casting Earth-Style Wall twice, then kicks Asuma out of the ring and wins the match. Despite the instructor declaring the fight over, Ling Feng retaliates by attaching twenty small explosive tags to Asuma and detonating them. Minato rescues Asuma, but parts of his body are already charred. Minato ends the confrontation and announces that Asuma will be away from school for a week 11.
Aftermath
Minato subsequently asks Ling Feng to apologize to Asuma and Obito. Hiruzen, however, praises Ling Feng's courage and says Asuma should take him as a role model 16 17.
When Asuma later sees Kurenai and Rin embrace Ling Feng in the street, his jealousy resurfaces. He prepares to confront Ling Feng, but abandons the idea after Obito reminds him how strong their rival has become 34.
Personality
Asuma is proud, quick-tempered, and sensitive to romantic competition. He resents Ling Feng's popularity with Kurenai and reacts to perceived disrespect with threats and challenges. His anger can override his judgment: he initially overlooks school disciplinary rules and later uses dangerous explosive tags during a supervised spar 2 10.
His bravado weakens when confronted with superior strength. After witnessing Ling Feng's Great Fireball Technique, he tries to evade their promised fight. Even after recovering from their Academy match, he remains resentful but can be persuaded not to attack again 5 34.
