• Everyday appearance: An elderly man with messy hair, a grease-covered body, and a ragged grayish-brown robe. He eats a chicken leg while approaching the Three-Eyed Golden Lion, matching his “Chicken Leg Douluo” nickname 60.
• Taotie True Body: An earth-yellow, bull-horned monster more than thirty meters long 61.
• After his defeat: Zeng Tian’s flames burn his hair and beard to charcoal and reduce most of his clothing to ash. By his return to Shrek, his injuries leave him barely recognizable 64 68.

Personality

Xuan Zi is proud of his strength and dismissive of opponents he considers beneath him. He initially treats the Three-Eyed Golden Lion as an easy soul-ring target and repeatedly belittles the Scarlet King’s three-hundred-thousand-year cultivation, even while struggling against his speed. Mu En later condemns his failure to recognize the Emperor Auspicious Beast, attributing it to his neglect of study 60 70.

He values his students and reacts desperately when they are endangered. During the forest battle, he tries to break away to reach Huo Yuhao and his companions; afterward, he falls to his knees and sobs when reporting that they are probably dead. When Huo Yuhao returns, Xuan Zi refuses to blame him for the disaster 63 70 74.

His concern for his students coexists with a refusal to accept responsibility. He blames the soul beasts for his defeat and even faults the Three-Eyed Golden Lion for not announcing her identity. After losing his cultivation and learning how difficult recovery would be, he drinks heavily and calls himself a useless fool 74 84.

Godly Taotie Bull

• Possesses the Taotie bloodline, giving Xuan Zi physical attributes substantially above the Scarlet King’s 61.

Meteor Shower

History

Early Assessment of Zeng Tian

Bei Bei reports that a talking orange lizard robbed him of a Storage Soul Tool. Xuan Zi dismisses the creature as a mutated thousand-year soul beast and scolds Bei Bei. The creature is Zeng Tian, whose later strength far exceeds that assessment 11.

Attack on the Emperor Auspicious Beast

While escorting Huo Yuhao, Wang Dong, and Xiao Xiao on a soul hunt, Xuan Zi chooses to remain beside them because of recent disturbances in the Star Dou Great Forest. Following Huo Yuhao’s indication of a suitable soul beast, he enters the Mixed Zone and finds the Three-Eyed Golden Lion hunting a Twin Cyclops 70.

Failing to recognize the Emperor Auspicious Beast, he restrains the area with Gravity Control and attempts to capture her as Huo Yuhao’s soul ring. The Scarlet King intervenes and attacks him. Xuan Zi initially struggles with the Scarlet King’s enhanced speed, then gains the upper hand through Taotie True Body and domain-assisted Gravity Control 60 61.

The Three-Eyed Golden Lion joins the fight, forcing him onto the defensive. As the students flee, Xuan Zi uses Ring Devouring and Meteor Shower to break through the beasts’ obstruction and attempt to reunite with them 62 63.

Defeat and Loss of Cultivation

Zeng Tian intercepts Xuan Zi, destroys his meteors, and knocks him into a crater with one azure-flamed claw. He subsequently breaks Mending Heaven and prevents Xuan Zi from following the Scarlet King, whom he sends after the students 63 64 65.

Heat Wave Storm overwhelms both Mending Heaven and Ring Devouring, leaving Xuan Zi alive but with mangled flesh and almost all his bones broken. Zeng Tian hands him over to the Three-Eyed Golden Lion, who repeatedly strikes him before preparing a killing blow 66 67.

Di Tian stops her from killing him. Instead, he cripples Xuan Zi, extracts his Taotie bloodline aura, and carries him to Shrek Academy. Zhuang Yusen can treat the physical injuries but cannot restore his cultivation 67 68.

Consequences for Shrek

Di Tian forces Shrek to surrender its stockpiles of treasures, soul bones, and pills. Mu En accepts rather than risk a massacre, then demands Xuan Zi’s account of the incident 69.

Xuan Zi reports that the students are likely dead and describes the unknown fire dragon who defeated him. His estimate that Zeng Tian possesses at least six hundred thousand years of cultivation helps establish Zeng Tian’s public reputation and fourth-place position among the Top Ten Ferocious Beasts. In reality, Zeng Tian was Level 59 during their fight, equivalent to no more than roughly twenty thousand years of soul-beast cultivation 70 71 76 85.

Mu En orders Shrek to stop taking students into the Star Dou Great Forest for soul hunting. News of Xuan Zi’s incapacitation also reaches other major factions: the Star Luo leadership worries about Shrek’s weakened defenses, while Xu Tianran views the loss as an opportunity for the Sun Moon Empire 71 77.

Failed Treatment and the Holy Spirit Cult’s Offer

Huo Yuhao survives and reunites with Xuan Zi, blaming himself for his condition. Xuan Zi reassures him but identifies Zeng Tian as the beast who severely injured him and Di Tian as the one who crippled him. Without restored cultivation, his remaining lifespan is estimated at only two to five years 74 75.

Medicine Immortal Douluo Wang Xian’er later explains that full recovery requires both a legendary immortal herb and the stolen martial soul origin. Mu En tells Xuan Zi to accept his fate 84.

Afterward, Feng Ling approaches him while he is drinking in a Shrek City restaurant. Acting for the Holy Spirit Cult, she offers a black box whose contents she claims can restore him and make him stronger. Xuan Zi reaches for it, but neither a completed recovery nor his formal entry into the cult is confirmed 84.

Relationships

• Mu En — Chose Xuan Zi as his successor and relied on his peak Level 98 strength to protect Shrek until its younger generation matured. He harshly reprimands Xuan Zi after the forest disaster but still seeks treatment for him 68 70 84.
• Huo Yuhao — A valued student for whom he attempts to obtain the Three-Eyed Golden Lion’s soul ring. Huo Yuhao considers Xuan Zi’s crippling his own fault, while Xuan Zi refuses to blame him 60 74 75.
