Background / History
Inherited Mountain Legacy
Xin Ruoyin accidentally entered a formation on a secluded mountain and obtained the legacy left by its former master. She remained there to cultivate, descending only occasionally to buy necessities. The surviving inheritance included formation jade slips, cultivation techniques, and accounts of the cultivation world. Lin Yun was the first cultivator she had encountered 11.
Initially wary of his superior strength, she was prepared to surrender the inheritance in exchange for her life. His refusal to seize it eased her suspicions. After diagnosing her Dragon-Yin Body, he supplied medicine and stayed to exchange formation insights with her. Their first extended period together lasted two months 11.
Escape from the Heavenly South
As the Six Demonic Path Sects invaded, Lin Yun entrusted her with repairing a damaged Ancient Teleportation Formation as an escape route. She completed the reconstruction plans and gathered the necessary materials before leaving the mountain where she had lived for nearly twenty years. She left its defensive formation intact to continue guarding her home 34 45.
At the spirit stone mine, she inspected the surviving array and estimated that its delicate repairs would require at least seven days. By the time Yunlu Old Devil pursued Lin Yun and Nangong Wan to the cavern, the array was fully restored. It carried Xin Ruoyin and the escaping group to an isolated island in the Chaotic Star Sea 46 51 52 53.
Life in Tianxing City
After reaching Tianxing City, Xin Ruoyin continued cultivating and researching formations while helping manage the shared cave residence. She stocked the Herb Garden, handled visitors during Lin Yun’s seclusion, and established commercial ties with the Fengle Auction House and Merchant Alliance through her formations 60 62 67 74.
Ancient formation records brought back by Lin Yun and Nangong Wan opened a new direction in her teleportation research. With Lin Yun’s demonstration of three-dimensional coordinate runes, she gained an insight and entered seclusion to study them. Her eventual goal was a teleportation connection between the Chaotic Star Sea and the Heavenly South 95.
Supreme Yin Transformation
To resolve her constitution permanently, Xin Ruoyin undertook the Supreme Yin Chain Form in a specially rented cave abode on Sacred Mountain’s thirty-eighth level. She lay in a deep-sea cold jade coffin, holding a Supreme Yin Cold Pill in her mouth while Lin Yun established the supporting formation 110 111.
After seventy years, she returned with her body and soul transformed, her Dragon-Yin affliction cured, and her origin pill already at the fifth turn. Lin Yun then helped stabilize her cultivation and taught her how to cultivate supreme yin primordial qi. She subsequently prioritized reaching the sixth turn over joining the Void Sky Hall expedition 125 126 127 155.
Strange Abyss Island
While traveling with Xiao Mei to gather teleportation-array materials, Xin Ruoyin heard of a spiritual herb near Strange Abyss Island that might help Xiao Mei reach Core Formation. Their search brought them to the outskirts of the Sea Abyss, where a massive beast tide erupted. She escaped its edge with Xiao Mei before Lin Yun found them and brought them to Blackstone City 161 165.
The city’s teleportation array was destroyed during the scramble to flee. Xin Ruoyin joined the defenders’ discussions and later fought through the beast tide using freezing light and ice needles. Afterward, she accompanied Lin Yun and Nangong Wan as they processed the remains of an Azure Flood Dragon; Lin Yun promised to share the benefits of its grade-nine Demon Core with both women 166 169 172.
Appearance
- At her debut: Appears seventeen or eighteen, wearing a slightly worn blue gown. Her features are not described as exceptionally beautiful, but her unusually lively eyes make her memorable 10.
- After cultivating the Great Yin Mysterious Scripture: Develops snow-white skin and a cool, reserved bearing. Her earlier sickly frailty gives way to a healthy appearance; she later wears long white dresses and robes 67 74 95 155.
- After the Supreme Yin Chain Form: Has flowing long hair, “Ice Skin and Jade Bones,” and brighter, more crystalline eyes. Subtle refinements to her features bring her beauty to the level of Nangong Wan and Ling Yuling, while an innate supreme yin aura strengthens her aloof bearing 125.
Personality
Xin Ruoyin’s devotion to formations outweighs even her fear of death. When told that continued cultivation could kill her, her first concern is whether she still has time to research arrays. She becomes deeply absorbed in calculations and readily interrupts a reunion when a new spatial insight demands immediate study 11 27 95.
She is cautious without being helpless: she initially guards her home with a talisman, evaluates Lin Yun’s motives before accepting his medicine, and later faces the dangerous Supreme Yin Chain Form without visible fear. She also recognizes her limitations, choosing to stay behind rather than hinder hazardous expeditions 10 11 62 79 110.
Her cool demeanor softens around those close to her. She worries intensely during Lin Yun’s Core Formation seclusion, blushes when her affection is exposed, and comforts Xiao Mei rather than blaming her after their dangerous herb search 45 73 126 165.
Abilities & Skills
Formation Mastery
Xin Ruoyin can exchange formation insights with Lin Yun on equal footing within days of beginning their collaboration 11.
- Helps restore and improve the Five Elements Reversal Formation, including a three-month period of work with Lin Yun 15 27.
- Works out the fifth layer of the Seven Wonders Formation and uses its principles to strengthen her defensive array 27.
- While still at Qi Refining, creates a formation that Lin Yun judges capable of stopping a Core Formation cultivator. It cannot stop his Formless Sword Escape 27.
- Produces advanced formations for sale and receives a commission for two sets from Elder Liu 67 74.
- Studies unfamiliar restrictions even during an auction visit, examining the barriers against spiritual-sense probing around her private room 71.
Teleportation Arrays and Spatial Coordinates
Her research develops from repairing an existing ancient array to preparing instructions for constructing an ultra-long-distance connection 46 156.
- Reconstructs the damaged corner of the Ancient Teleportation Formation and completes its repairs 46 51.
- Deciphers the coordinate runes and determines the spatial coordinates of the ancient arrays in the Heavenly South and Chaotic Star Sea 99 156.
- Gains enough spatial understanding to perceive spaces forming inside the Lotus Pond’s lotuses, though she cannot identify their restrictions 105.
- Masters the construction of short- and medium-range teleportation arrays 156.
- Solves the final problem of stabilizing an ultra-long-distance passage with Lin Yun and information from Silver Moon’s memories 156.
- Completes construction instructions after several further months. Rare materials remain an obstacle; the plan assigns her the Chaotic Star Sea array and Lin Yun its Heavenly South counterpart 156.
Great Yin Mysterious Scripture
The scripture suppresses the harmful yang energy of her Dragon-Yin Body and develops her supreme yin origin qi 60 74.
- Initially improves her condition enough that she reports suppression even without taking pills 60.
- Nevertheless requires safeguards: forcing her yang-aligned constitution to practice a supreme yin method carries a serious risk of cultivation deviation 74.
- Supreme Yin Meridian-Guarding Pills allow her to cultivate safely during this period 74.
- Lin Yun’s revised version supports the later cultivation of supreme yin primordial qi, confirmed by the origin pill she forms 125.
Supreme Yin Chain Form
This technique reforges both body and soul through a death-and-rebirth process 111.
- Her breathing and heartbeat cease, and the process eventually disperses her Divine Soul; an undimmed spark of true spirit preserves the basis for reconstruction 111.
- Uses a Supreme Yin Cold Pill as its medium and a Six Directions Yin-Gathering Formation to supply supreme yin energy 110 111.
- Resolves the Dragon-Yin affliction and allows her to emerge at the fifth Origin Pill turn 125.
- Does not carry her directly to Nascent Soul: Lin Yun attributes that limitation to her insufficient foundation 125.
Supreme Yin Ice Techniques
Her post-transformation combat techniques freeze enemies before breaking them apart 169.
- Supreme Yin Mystic Light: Released through the Supreme Yin Treasure Mirror; each sweep freezes beasts and seawater across an area several dozen feet wide 169.
- Ice-Soul Divine Light Needles: Shatter the frozen beasts and sea into pieces during the Blackstone City breakout 169.
- Supreme yin lunar cold magic power: Lies outside the five elements, allowing her to wield the Primordial Magnetic Five Elements Ring without suffering its interference with five-element power 161.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Inherited books and jade slips — Her initial research collection includes complete and incomplete ancient formations, formation essays, cultivation-world travel notes, and Five Elements cultivation techniques 11.
- Iron Essence sword talisman — A protective gift from Lin Yun containing a flight escape art and three sword-qi attacks, sufficient to deal with a Great Circle Qi Condensation cultivator 11.
- Medicinal safeguards — Flowing Moon Pills taken every three days initially suppress her condition. Stronger pills containing a trace of Three Lights Divine Water are supplied for Foundation Establishment, followed by Supreme Yin Meridian-Guarding Pills for her yin cultivation 11 27 74.
- Taiyi Five-Smoke Gauze — Given to her for the journey to the spirit stone mine; she uses it to carry Xiao Mei in flight 45.
- Voice-and-Image Transmission Talisman — Enables communication with Lin Yun within a thousand-mile radius during the teleportation-array repairs 46 47.
- Treasure-Dropping Coin — A protective gift capable of forcibly seizing other cultivators’ magic treasures 59 60.
- Supreme Yin Cold Pill — Initially the medium for her Supreme Yin Chain Form; becomes her lifebound magic treasure when she forms her core 110 125.
- Supreme Yin Treasure Mirror — Refined for decades as the core of her supporting yin-gathering formation, then given to her by Lin Yun. She later uses it to release Supreme Yin Mystic Light 111 125 169.
- Thousand-year profound ice — Given by Lin Yun alongside the method for refining an Ice Soul Divine Light Sword. She instead chooses to refine an Ice Soul Divine Needle 160.
- Primordial Magnetic Five Elements Ring — Given to her by Lin Yun because her supreme yin power avoids the interference it would cause a five-element cultivator 161.
Relationships
- Lin Yun — Benefactor, cultivation guide, formation collaborator, and romantic partner. He preserves her life with medicine because he wants to see how far her formation talent can develop. Their mutual affection is initially restrained by her constitution and his cultivation requirements; after her transformation and stabilization, they become intimate 11 27 45 62 125 126.
- Xiao Mei — Maid and close companion who cultivates alongside her. Xin Ruoyin encourages her cultivation, carries her in flight, and risks searching near the Sea Abyss for an herb that could help her reach Core Formation 27 110 125 165.
- Nangong Wan — Close, sister-like companion. Despite initially feeling downcast over Nangong Wan’s bond with Lin Yun, Xin Ruoyin accepts her invitation to call her elder sister. Nangong Wan supports her research, worries about the Supreme Yin Chain Form, and welcomes her recovery 53 54 95 109 125.
- Han Li — Fellow cultivator, formation customer, and contributor to her successful breakthrough. She repays his help with a jade slip containing her formation insights 109 127.
