Power Progression

The following milestones are explicitly documented; removing a bottleneck does not itself establish advancement to the next stage.

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Nascent Soul formation — Nangong Wan 122 Forms her Nascent Soul after attaining the Sixth Turn of Core Formation. Immediately achieves perfect control through unity of mind and spirit, and needs only further True Essence accumulation to reach the middle stage.
Further Nascent Soul refinement — Nangong Wan 162 Her deeper understanding of Southern Bright Lihuo Fire burns away much of her yin spirit’s yin substance, removing the bottleneck before the late stage. No middle- or late-stage breakthrough is confirmed here.

Formation and Cultivation

Ordinary Formation

  • Mortal Realm cultivators purify their True Essence until they can shatter their golden cores and form Nascent Souls 46.
  • Ordinary newly formed Nascent Souls cannot immediately be controlled perfectly: the cultivator’s mind and spirit are not yet united, so the soul initially acts on instinct 46 122.
  • A period of further cultivation is normally required to gain full control and unleash the Nascent Soul’s power 46 122.
  • Formation includes a Heart Demon tribulation. Lin Yun identifies this as the principal point where temperament affects advancement under the Mortal Realm methods he has studied 46 122.
  • Advancement remains slow even after formation. Lin Yun remarks that a few hundred years may be insufficient for a middle-stage cultivator to reach the late stage 46.

Mortal Realm and Zu Mountain Nascent Souls

Lin Yun distinguishes the two traditions by the nature of the spiritual body they produce 111.

Form / Stage Nature Capabilities and limitations
Mortal Realm: early and middle stages In Lin Yun’s assessment, a yin spirit housed in a shell forged from refined True Essence Can leave the body, but cannot remain outside for long. Damage to the physical body also seriously harms the Nascent Soul 111.
Mortal Realm: late stage Undergoes a qualitative transition from yin spirit toward yang spirit This transformation creates an enormous gulf between late-stage “great cultivators” and early- or middle-stage cultivators 111.
Zu Mountain Nascent Soul Yang spirit Can remain outside the body for extended periods and serve as an avatar 111.

Alternative Methods

  • Sixth Turn Return-to-Elixir Method: Directing energy with spirit and unifying spirit with energy greatly assists Nascent Soul formation. Nangong Wan’s success demonstrates both unusually smooth formation and immediate control of the resulting soul 107 122 123.
  • Foundation requirements: Nangong Wan chooses formation after the sixth turn because her original Core Formation foundation cannot support completing all nine revolutions and cultivating Lin Yun’s Golden Core 107.
  • Supreme Yin Chain Form: Can potentially condense the practitioner’s form, gather the soul, and forge a Nascent Soul through death and restoration. Lin Yun predicts a result at least comparable to a great cultivator’s soul, with a strong possibility of becoming a yang spirit 111.
  • Supreme Yin Chain Form’s limits: Xin Ruoyin’s perfected Foundation Establishment cultivation gives her only a faint chance of forming such a soul; undergoing the method with Core Formation cultivation would offer much better prospects 111.
  • Southern Bright Lihuo Fire: Can be cultivated through a Nascent Soul body. Nangong Wan later uses its true meaning to refine away yin substance and eliminate her late-stage bottleneck 107 162.

Pills and Resources

Resource Relevance
Nine-Curve Spirit Ginseng Pill Increases the chances of Nascent Soul formation. Nangong Wan initially believes spirit medicine of the required quality is no longer obtainable 84.
Heaven Mending Pill Refines the primordial spiritual roots of cultivators below Nascent Soul and can aid eventual formation 143 145.
Spirit pills refined from an eighth-level demon core Lin Yun gives these to Nangong Wan to support her cultivation toward the sixth turn and subsequent formation 111.
Ancient spirit pills Can advance Nascent Soul cultivation, but many recipes rely on medicines believed lost or extinct in the Mortal Realm 84.

Appearance and Formation Phenomena

  • Nangong Wan’s Nascent Soul: A fair, delicate figure approximately two inches tall, almost identical to her physical appearance, surrounded by golden-red spiritual light 122.
  • Distinguishing mark: A Vermilion Bird-shaped flame mark between its brows 122.
  • Formation spectacle: Multicolored spiritual motes spread more than a hundred miles around her cave abode, gather into five-colored radiance, and converge into a vast sphere amid wind, rain, thunder, and lightning 122.
  • Energy condensation: A fiery-red pillar strikes the sphere, which contracts into a fist-sized translucent bead and descends into the abode before the Heart Demon tribulation 122.
  • Successful breakthrough manifestation: A luminous female figure roughly one thousand feet tall appears overhead, radiating pressure that forces low-level cultivators prostrate and leaves Core Formation cultivators trembling 122.

Abilities and Limitations

Spiritual Manifestation

  • A Nascent Soul can leave and re-enter its physical body. Nangong Wan’s newly formed soul independently examines her body before returning through the top of her head 122.
  • Extended separation is limited for ordinary early- and middle-stage Mortal Realm souls, according to Lin Yun’s analysis 111.
  • A yang-spirit Nascent Soul can function as an avatar rather than merely making brief excursions from the body 111.

Survival After Bodily Destruction

  • Destruction of the physical body does not necessarily kill a Nascent Soul cultivator. Golden Glow Old Daoist escapes as a Nascent Soul after a transformed demon beast blasts his body apart 169.
  • A surviving Nascent Soul can possess a replacement body and resume cultivation. Master Sifa has done so, although his recovered strength is insufficient against his pursuer during the beast tide 169.
  • Golden Glow Old Daoist’s Nascent Soul uses an instantaneous movement divine ability to escape the initial attack; his ultimate survival remains uncertain 169.

Combat Power and Spiritual Pressure

  • Nascent Soul cultivators fly substantially faster than Core Formation cultivators, making ordinary flight an unreliable escape from pursuit 52.
  • Their spiritual pressure can compel lower-ranked cultivators to yield space or retreat without a fight 96 122 132.
  • Realm superiority is not absolute. At the perfected fifth turn, Nangong Wan judges herself capable of defeating an ordinary early-stage Nascent Soul cultivator, but not of killing one 120.
  • Ninth-level demon cultivators are comparable to middle-stage Nascent Soul cultivators and are generally stronger than human cultivators of that stage 177.

Vulnerabilities and Countermeasures

  • Heartfire: The Three Flames Formation’s nonphysical flame stimulates desires, stray thoughts, and Heart Demons; Lin Yun states that it can severely wound a Nascent Soul cultivator 82.
  • Escaping souls: Nangong Wan and Xin Ruoyin destroy an Inverse Star Alliance cultivator’s body but fail to stop his Nascent Soul from fleeing. Xin Ruoyin believes a prepared formation would have prevented its escape 174.
  • Reincarnation Divine Light: A divine ability within the Plain Girl Reincarnation Art, specifically useful for subduing cultivators’ Nascent Souls 174.

Role in the Cultivation World

  • Sect influence: A Ghost Spirit Sect elder’s breakthrough enables the sect to participate in dividing the Yue Kingdom—something its previous strength could not support 48.
  • Institutional power: The Fengle Merchant Alliance has three Nascent Soul elders. Its middle-stage grand elder seeks a late-stage breakthrough, Elder Chen guards important Outer Sea resource sites, and the aging Elder Ye largely avoids Nascent Soul-level conflicts 94.
  • Public breakthroughs: The Star Palace does not prohibit outsiders from forming Nascent Souls in Tianxing City. Many candidates nevertheless prefer their own territories or distrust the city’s authorities 121.
  • Recruitment and confidence: Nangong Wan’s formation attracts recruitment attempts and increases other powers’ trust in the Star Palace 122.
  • Wartime intervention: During the Star Palace–Inverse Star Alliance war, Nascent Soul cultivators intervene against lower-ranked forces. Both sides then commit their own Nascent Soul combatants and suffer casualties 160.
  • Limits of protection: During Blackstone City’s fall, its Nascent Soul cultivators abandon the city and exploit the enemy’s attack on fleeing Core Formation cultivators to make their own escape 169 177.

Distinction from Lin Yun’s Cultivation

  • Lin Yun’s Nascent Soul-level pressure and combat strength do not by themselves establish that he follows the native Nascent Soul progression. Before his Golden Core formation, he advances through turns of an Origin Pill 118 138 150.
  • His revised Nine-Turn Return-to-Elixir Method produces a Yang Spirit when the three origins return to one and form a Golden Core 151.
  • His newly condensed Yang Spirit avatar initially possesses only early-stage Nascent Soul-level True Essence and magical power. By commanding heaven-and-earth primordial qi, however, its full combat strength approaches the late Nascent Soul level 151.
  • His main body slightly surpasses a late-stage Nascent Soul cultivator’s strength at that point, illustrating the distinction between cultivation attainment, accumulated power, and apparent aura 151.
