Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Egg-hatched outbreak 72 Giant eggs on De Star hatch into Infected, Queens, and a Broodmother. The Infected kill and parasitically control victims, while the Broodmother directs the controlled dean.
First underground Zerg Nest 78 The Broodmother establishes itself over 7,000 meters underground, produces Drones, spreads Creep, and has a Drone transform into a Hatchery. Within three days, it produces over 10,000 Drones.
Multi-nest expansion and antibody adaptation 79, 80 The swarm expands to 138 underground nest signals on De Star. Its Evolution Chamber digests Yuqin's Super Antibody, allowing later Zerg to develop resistance to it.
Planetary-scale aerial swarm 92 After nearly half a year of growth, the De Star swarm fields tens of millions of Mutalisks, a million Brood Lords, and nearly 200 million units overall.
Super Gene mutation 100 After acquiring Nuo Star genetic material, Zerg air units enlarge drastically and gain much harder carapaces; altered Brood Lords require three Tempest shots rather than one to kill.
Hybrid Broodmother emergence 102–104 A Broodmother mutates into a Hybrid Queen of Blades capable of tearing apart a Leviathan-class battlecruiser, resisting God-Slaying Weapons, regenerating from severe damage, and exerting mental suppression.
Abathur-directed evolution 192, 193 Abathur kills Izsha to claim control of the Main Nest Mind, then uses a Main Nest laboratory and captives from multiple civilizations to pursue further Zerg evolution.

Background

The Zerg are an organic swarm defined by rapid reproduction, collective coordination, and the assimilation of useful biological traits. Their nests convert minerals into organic matter, allowing them to grow military forces and living structures without conventional industry. Their overriding instinct is to devour life, acquire genetic advantages, and evolve beyond their enemies. 78 116

A Zerg Egg was secretly held and studied on De Star for thousands of years without activity. A few months before the Deno War, the eggs hatched, releasing Infected, Queens, and a Broodmother. De Star initially underestimated the outbreak, believing the small number of visible creatures could be contained. 72 89

The Broodmother withdrew deep underground rather than confront De Star’s military. It established a main nest near mineral veins, spread Creep through the excavated caverns, and dispatched Queens with Infected escorts to found additional nests. 78 The swarm’s Evolution Chamber later analyzed Yuqin’s Super Antibody and produced Zerg resistant to it, eliminating De Star’s most important protection against infection. 79 80

By the time Zeratul investigated De Star, the swarm had established 138 underground nests and devastated much of the planet’s population. The infestation subsequently spread to Nuo Star, where it obtained Super Gene material and rapidly mutated its forces. 86 100

Appearance

The Zerg have no single standard form. Their units are living weapons and infrastructure, commonly characterized by organic flesh, hardened carapace, invasive parasites, and black-purple Creep. 72 78

  • Infected — elongated creatures covered in fungal carapace, with sharp digging forelimbs and parasitic tail stingers. 72
  • Queens — taller than Infected; intelligent reproductive leaders beneath a Broodmother that can produce large numbers of larvae. 72
  • Creep — black-purple, viscous biological matter that covers nest territory and serves as the swarm’s living foundation. 78
  • Hybrid Queen of Blades — a humanoid-bodied Hybrid Broodmother with purple carapace, compound insect eyes, claws, retractable bone wings, and a Zerg-like head. 102
  • Leviathan — a colossal Zerg fusion organism hundreds of kilometers long, formed from millions of Zerg and armed with defensive Crawlers and Plasmatic Eruption. 105

Abilities & Skills

Neural Parasitism

Infected use Neuroparasites to kill, infect, and control living hosts.

  • An Infected can secrete up to ten Neuroparasites, which can survive indefinitely. 72
  • Controlled victims may retain enough normal behavior to conceal the infection and mislead others. 72
  • Super Warriors can initially resist infection, while Yuqin temporarily avoided control through repeated Super Antibody injections. 78
  • The Evolution Chamber enabled the swarm to adapt against Yuqin’s Super Antibody after analyzing her blood. 79 80

Main Nest Mind Communication

The swarm coordinates through the Overmind/Main Nest Mind rather than conventional signals.

  • Parasitized members can communicate across billions of light-years through a hidden system not based on electromagnetic waves, Dark Data, Psionic Energy signals, or Void fluctuations. 80
  • The Main Nest Mind can control countless Zerg and conduct fine manipulation across distant star systems. 192
  • Zerg communication is difficult for outsiders to intercept, but the swarm itself does not understand most other communication systems. 80

Nest Construction and Reproduction

Zerg Nests are living production centers built through biological conversion.

  • Drones gather minerals, convert them into organic matter, and can transform into Hatcheries or other living structures. 78 79
  • Hatcheries generate Larvae, which are transformed into specific Zerg forms through specialized structures. 79
  • Brood Lords can rapidly produce thousands of short-lived but highly aggressive Broodlings within seconds. 92
  • A single surviving Larva can potentially develop into a galaxy-scale Zerg Nest within years if left unchecked. 100

Creep Territory

Creep is the biological foundation of a Zerg Nest and provides major tactical advantages.

  • Main nests can only be built on Creep. 78
  • Zerg moving on Creep receive injury recovery, increased movement speed, and stronger carapaces. 78
  • Burrowed Zerg beneath Creep are difficult to detect even for Protoss Scouts; experienced Templar are needed to sense their location. 78

Biological Evolution

The swarm can analyze and incorporate advantageous genes from enemies and captured organisms.

  • Evolution Chambers extract useful genetic traits and create new mutation paths. 79
  • The swarm used Trigonian specimens to grant the Hybrid Queen powerful mental suppression. 103
  • Nuo Star Super Genes greatly increased the size, resilience, and combat power of multiple Zerg air units. 100
  • Abathur’s later Main Nest contains captives from numerous civilizations, including humans, Angels, Devils, Deno, Lieyang, Trigonians, Beast Bodies, and God River remnants, for Super Gene experimentation. 193

Zerg Military Organisms

  • Zerglings — basic swarm attackers; can evolve through the Split Pool into Leap Zerglings or Split Zerglings. 79
  • Hydralisks — ranged assault organisms whose spikes can pierce two-centimeter Dark Alloy and accurately strike ground targets over ten kilometers away. 79
  • Roaches — burrowing units capable of ambushing targets with highly corrosive saliva. 88
  • Ultralisks — massive ground war machines armed with monomolecular bone scythes comparable in sharpness to Purifier energy blades. 79
  • Mutalisks — flying attackers that can be evolved into far larger and more durable forms. 100
  • Brood Lords — long-range aerial breeders that continuously spawn Broodlings. 92
  • Spine Crawlers and Spore Crawlers — defensive nest organisms; the latter can threaten light warships, while their absence leaves Zerg vulnerable to cloaked Dark Templar. 87 105
  • Leviathans — star-scale Zerg behemoths formed through mass fusion and equipped with Plasmatic Eruption. 105

Relationships

  • Kerrigan / Queen of Blades — Former Zerg ruler who created Nydus to kill Protoss; after becoming a Xel'naga, she left the swarm under Zagara’s leadership and promoted coexistence with Protoss and humans. 104 175
  • Zagara — Successor to Kerrigan who supported peaceful coexistence; Abathur and Izsha conspired to seize authority from her. 104 175
  • Nydus — Broodmother created by Kerrigan. It misinterpreted an order to kill a Protoss shuttle’s occupants as an eternal directive to exterminate all Protoss. 104
  • Abathur — Ancient evolution master who believes the Zerg are destined to devour and assimilate the universe. He later kills Izsha and seeks to become the Main Nest Mind’s center himself. 175 192
  • Izsha — Zerg lieutenant and Leviathan neural symbiont who conspired with Abathur against Zagara before Abathur devoured her as “imperfect.” 175 192
  • Amon — Void entity who resurrected Nydus, commands Abathur through a black-and-red Keystone, and orders the Zerg to destroy the Protoss. 104 193
  • Protoss — The swarm’s principal enemy. The Golden Armada repeatedly conducts extermination operations because even a small surviving Zerg remnant can rebuild into a major threat. 88 100

Story Role / Major Arcs

De Star Infestation

The Zerg first emerge publicly after giant eggs hatch within De Star’s research facilities. Infected parasitize the dean, Queens and Infected multiply, and the Broodmother escapes into the planet’s depths to establish a concealed nest network. 72 78

Deno War

Zeratul’s investigation confirms 138 underground Zerg nests beneath De Star. The swarm attacks the Light Shield royal palace with Zerglings, Hydralisks, Roaches, Mutalisks, and Ultralisks, while the Golden Armada later confronts tens of millions of Zerg in orbit. 86 87 92

De Star and Nuo Star Purification

The swarm exploits conflict between De Star and Nuo Star, infecting both worlds and evolving through acquired Super Gene material. The Protoss conclude that complete planetary destruction is the only reliable means of eliminating the infestation. 90 100 101

Nydus and the Hybrid Queen

Nydus returns as a Hybrid-enhanced Broodmother, gaining extraordinary regeneration, mental attacks, and immunity to ordinary Psionic attacks. She traps Protoss heroes with a Tearing Force Field and continues her fixation on exterminating the Protoss. 103 104

Amon’s Repeated Invasions

Over the following ten thousand years, Amon repeatedly deploys Zerg and Hybrid forces into the Known Universe. These forces are usually eliminated before they can establish a fully developed Main Nest, but incursions become increasingly frequent. 120

Abathur’s Rebellion and Evolution Program

During the war in the Koprulu Sector, Abathur rejects coexistence and allies with Amon. After killing Izsha, he disappears using a phasing ability and establishes a new laboratory-like Main Nest to experiment on captured life forms and create further mutations. 175 192 193

Trivia

  • The Zerg’s Main Nest Mind is fundamentally different from Protoss communication systems and remains beyond full Protoss understanding. 80
  • The Void Seeker is described as the only known vessel able to penetrate Creep interference and directly detect Zerg signals. 85
  • Nydus’s vendetta against the Protoss began because she interpreted Kerrigan’s limited command literally and expanded it into a lifelong purpose. 104
  • Abathur does not normally lie; as an ancient Cerebrate-like Zerg, it considers deception meaningless outside the Main Nest Mind’s shared consciousness. 192
