History

Destruction of the original universe

Rohana states that the Protoss originated in another universe, where they were among its most advanced civilizations and wielded highly developed psionic technology. Their universe was devastated after Amon returned with the Void; humans, Zerg, and eventually the Protoss fell as the universe approached destruction. 2

To preserve civilization, the Hierarch ordered Rohana—the last surviving Highest Protector—to be copied into a Purifier Overmind carrying the databases of the Protoss, humans, and Zerg. Kerrigan's biological essence and Xel'naga-derived power enabled Rohana to cross into a new universe and warp in surviving Protoss infrastructure and personnel before the old universe completely collapsed. 2

Revival on Giant Elephant Star

Rohana chose Shen Jun as the Protoss' guardian and leader because of his exceptional psionic control. Using Crystal Minerals, Vespene Gas, and Biological Essence, Shen Jun began rebuilding the civilization through a Nexus, Crystal Towers, housing, medical facilities, and military infrastructure. 2 3

The first two hundred Protoss were automatically informed of Shen Jun's authority and his language upon arrival. Despite coming from different eras and factions, they accepted that their former universe was gone and that old prejudices had to be set aside for survival. 4

By the first large-scale deployment, the revived population included Khalai, Nerazim, Tal'darim, and engineers. Shen Jun's command gradually unified these groups into the new Daelaam civilization. 11 14

Neutrality and the Form War

When Angel He Xi reached Aiur, the Protoss declared themselves neither a Beast Body nor a God River Body civilization, stating that “Protoss are Protoss.” They initially presented themselves as neutral in the Form War, even while preparing to exploit the conflict for resources and technological growth. 16

The arrival of Variegated Blue's Trigonian fleet ended practical neutrality. The Protoss fought alongside He Xi, whose view of them changed from a possible subordinate civilization to an equal ally after witnessing their fleet and battlefield capabilities. 21 23

Expansion of Daelaam

After securing Aiur and nearby resource worlds, the Protoss established mining bases in the Sien Star System and constructed Time-Space Navigation Routes to connect distant territories without meaningful delay. 31 32

The Koprulu Sector became their declared territory, while affiliated civilizations were protected and monitored through Protoss navigation routes in their home systems. 44

Their rule was not uniformly benevolent. The Winged Person and Glo civilizations were annihilated after attempting to abandon their affiliation for the Heavenly Dao Star System, while some Beast Body civilizations were expelled or used as subjects for hybrid research. 53 60

Appearance

Most Protoss are towering humanoids with an appearance distinct from both Beast Bodies and God River Bodies. Early arrivals are described as approximately three meters tall, blue-skinned, and usually equipped with Energy Heavy Armor. 4 16

  • Blue skin and glowing blue eyes are common among Khalai Protoss. 4
  • Protoss faces lack visible mouths, noses, and eyebrows. 4
  • Nerazim commonly have green eyes and may wear minimal clothing rather than standard armor. 4
  • Tal'darim such as Alarak are generally gray-skinned, red-eyed, and wear black armor. 11
  • Most military personnel wear mass-produced Energy Heavy Armor. 17

Culture and Society

The Protoss reject monarchy; when He Xi asks to meet their king, Tassadar answers that the Protoss have no king. Their current government is instead led by Archbishop Shen Jun. 16

Their society is divided among four principal groups:

  • Khalai — Mainstream Protoss who cultivate Purification Psionic Energy and form the core conventional military and engineering population. 4 11
  • Nerazim — Dark Templar who wield Void Psionic Energy, specialize in stealth and assassination, and are led by Zeratul and Vorazun. 4 22
  • Tal'darim — Former followers of Amon whose forces include Ascendants and are led by Alarak. 11
  • Purifiers — Mechanical copies based on deceased Protoss consciousnesses; they ultimately become the largest military branch. 2 42

The revived civilization maintains a strong collective identity while allowing its factions considerable independence. Its warriors commemorate fallen comrades as heroes, but do not permit grief to weaken their resolve to fight. 24 26

Psionic Abilities and Technology

Psionic Energy

Psionic Energy is central to Protoss biology, warfare, and technology. The Protoss traditionally distinguish between Purification Psionic Energy, used by Khalai Templars, and Void Psionic Energy, used by Nerazim Dark Templars. 4

  • Psionic Blades — Condensed through Psionic Concentrators for close-quarters combat. 3
  • Psionic Shields — Energy barriers generated through armor and personal psionic output. 3 21
  • Psionic Storms — High-level area attacks used extensively in fleet warfare. 175
  • Astral Wind — A rare Executor-class technique originating from Aiur's former High Council. 112
  • Void Shield — A defensive layer capable of supplementing the shields of Golden Armada warships. 112

After the Protoss' genetic shackles are unlocked, their psionic potential is no longer fixed at birth, though further advancement becomes exponentially more difficult at higher levels. 87

Warp Network and Psionic Matrix

Protoss spatial technology exceeds that of contemporary civilizations in the Super God Universe. 17

  • Crystal Towers/Pylons — Originally used by Rohana to warp adult Protoss from the collapsing original universe. 2 11
  • Warp Gates — Maintain independent Time-Space Navigation Routes capable of near-instant travel across galactic distances. 6
  • Time-Space Navigation Routes — Built using paired Warp Gates with a hyperspatial psionic connection. 32
  • Psionic Matrix — The technological foundation of Protoss civilization and the energy network supporting its weapons and infrastructure. 15 21
  • Spatial denial — The Protoss can deploy fields capable of closing or preventing unauthorized wormhole access within a star region. 17 21

Military Technology

The Protoss combine rapid production, psionic weaponry, automated construction, and specialized fleets.

  • Photon Cannons — Defensive weapons using micro-antimatter cannons and advanced sensors capable of detecting cloaked targets. 6
  • Void Rays — Widely used capital ships whose prism beams combine Purification and Void Energy to cause internal explosions in targets. 20
  • Carriers — Heavy warships deploying Interceptors and powerful ship-mounted weaponry. 21
  • Arbiters — Fleet support vessels able to connect with the Psionic Matrix and continuously supply power to other ships. 21
  • Colossi — Stellar-energy war machines; three can devastate a planet's surface under extreme conditions. 15
  • Motherships and Ark Ships — Major strategic vessels used for long-term operations and large-scale warfare. 31 175

Genetic and Hybrid Research

The Tal'darim-led research program pursues Super Genes and hybrid organisms. Its early experiments used Elephant Men as subjects, with initial Super Gene implantation causing rapid deaths. 35

Later work combines Protoss, Angel, Zerg, and Alien Beast genetic data. Though Angel Super Genes initially conflicted with Protoss genes in test subjects, the program produces increasingly powerful Hybrid Beast Bodies and supports population-wide Protoss enhancement. 42 44

Superweapons

  • Halo Array — A Forerunner-created superweapon using cross-phase neutrino waves to exterminate life on a galactic scale. The Protoss activate their array against the Zerg, eliminating 70% of Hybrids in one targeted starfield. 186
  • Spear of Adun — An Ark Ship built under Shen Jun's direction and used as a command platform during the war against the Zerg. 70 175
  • Destruction Cluster — A Spear of Adun weapon system charged by Motherships. 112
  • Planetary Purification and orbital bombardment systems — Fleet-scale weapons used against the Zerg and Hybrid forces. 175

Notable Quotes

“We Protoss are the most unique existence in the universe. We're neither what you call Beast Body nor God River Body. Protoss are Protoss!” — Alarak 16

“Sorry, the Protoss have no king!” — Tassadar 16

“Warriors, defeat these Trigonians, fight for Aiur!” — Shen Jun 21

Trivia

  • A single Crystal Tower can initially carry two hundred randomly selected adult Protoss, including warriors or engineers. 2
  • The first mass deployment produced more than 80,000 Protoss, but the Pylon option then disappeared from Rohana's construction panel because it was required as a connection to the historical Protoss population. 11
  • Protoss reproduce sexually, but their reproductive cycle is stated to be roughly ten times longer than that of humans. 58
  • Population-wide genetic enhancement shortens the maturation cycle of newborn Protoss and prevents natural death, although reproduction remains comparatively slow. 44
  • The Protoss retain an enduring weakness in conventional lifespan without Super Gene enhancement; this is one reason Shen Jun seeks Angel genetic technology. 16
