Background / History
Capture and trust
Pikachu originally lived as a wild Pokémon in Pewter City. Xiao Yan encountered him at the market while a crowd chased him for stealing a Berry. Pikachu escaped a net but was eventually cornered, allowing Xiao Yan to challenge him with Charmeleon. Despite his speed and a Thunderbolt that paralyzed Charmeleon, Pikachu was defeated by Dragon Rage and caught in a Poké Ball 6.
He initially rejected his new Trainer, biting Xiao Yan’s hand and refusing to engage with him. Xiao Yan noticed that Pikachu had held onto the Berry throughout the fight and offered him a bag of food, which Pikachu eagerly accepted 6.
Their relationship changed during a battle against Gary’s Kangaskhan. Blinded by Mud-Slap, Pikachu ignored an instruction and was struck by Earthquake. Xiao Yan caught him as he was thrown backward and promised to act as his eyes. Pikachu then followed his directions, dodged Stomp, and won with Thunderbolt and Quick Attack. After Xiao Yan cleaned his face, Pikachu jumped onto his shoulder rather than returning to his ball 6.
Journey through Kanto
Pikachu became a regular companion outside his Poké Ball. After training with Xiao Yan’s team at Mt. Moon, he defeated Ash’s Pikachu in Cerulean City and helped win the Cascade Badge. He also assisted with non-combat tasks, including making Xiao Lan laugh and acting dejected during Xiao Yan’s peaceful capture of Dragonite 7 8 9 10.
His electrical attacks supported Xiao Yan against Team Rocket, during a bicycle race, and at Gyarados Lake. Later, he helped reopen a drought-stricken village’s river and offered food to an abandoned Pidgey 13 14 18 22 32 34.
Pikachu’s battle against Suicune became a major demonstration of his bond with Xiao Yan. He endured Blizzard and near-total freezing before exploiting Suicune’s paralysis with a final Thunderbolt. The victory enabled Suicune’s capture, but Pikachu collapsed afterward and was recalled to rest. Watching him fight inspired Xiao Yan’s other Pokémon to train on their own 35.
Indigo League and Kalos
At the Indigo League, Pikachu watched an early match from the coach’s area while wearing sunglasses. He later defeated Ash’s Charizard in the fourth round and was on the field when Ritchie’s Pikachu was declared unable to battle, securing Xiao Yan’s advancement to the semifinals 41 42 44.
After the tournament, Pikachu accompanied Xiao Yan and Charizard during the search for Mewtwo. He subsequently traveled with Xiao Yan to Kalos and greeted Serena by shaking her hand when she joined their journey 46 49.
Personality
Pikachu is initially stubborn, distrustful, and willing to bite someone who approaches him. His refusal to surrender a stolen Berry even during battle prompts Xiao Yan to recognize his hunger. Once Xiao Yan protects him and offers reliable guidance, Pikachu becomes cooperative and affectionate, choosing to travel on his shoulder 6.
He enjoys showing off: after displaying Volt Tackle, he gives a smile that Xiao Yan interprets as boastful. He is also mischievous, helping Ash’s group tip Xiao Yan into a swimming pool and repeatedly slapping his Trainer to interrupt distractions. His gentler side appears when he brings bread to a starving Pidgey and hands Xiao Yan water when he chokes 7 27 31 34 36 43 49.
Abilities & Skills
Electrical attacks
- Thunderbolt — His most frequently demonstrated attack. It can paralyze opponents, overpower another Pikachu’s electricity, and incapacitate multiple targets through water 6 7 22.
- Thunder — Strikes Suicune from above during rain. Xiao Yan explicitly states that the move cannot miss under those conditions 35.
- Volt Tackle — Envelops Pikachu in electricity as he charges into an opponent; explicitly used against Suicune 7 35.
- Water conduction — Electrifies the Cerulean Gym’s pool and Gyarados Lake, extending his attacks beyond a single opponent 8 22.
- Utility applications — Blasts through thorns obstructing a riverbed and wakes a sleeping Snorlax 32.
Speed and misdirection
- Quick Attack — Moves fast enough to evade ordinary visual tracking during his first battle with Charmeleon; also serves as a follow-up attack against weakened opponents 6 7.
- Double Team — Produces afterimages through rapid movement. Against Ash’s Charizard, even the apparent survivor of Swift proves to be another decoy 42.
- Concealed approach — Emerges from a hole beneath Charizard to launch his finishing attack 42.
Seismic Toss
- Grabs Ash’s Charizard in midair and slams it headfirst into the ground 42.
- Uses Thunderbolt during the grapple to stop Charizard from breaking free 42.
Flash
- Emits light from his body to illuminate the abandoned cabin containing the diary about Mew and Mewtwo 38.
Endurance and limitations
- Continues fighting after Suicune’s Blizzard causes frostbite and steadily drains his stamina, but collapses after the victory 35.
- Mud-Slap can obscure his vision; he overcomes this by following Xiao Yan’s directional commands 6.
- Kangaskhan’s Ground-type Earthquake deals double damage to him 6.
- Charmeleon’s Scary Face reduces his speed enough for Slash to connect 6.
