Strength Rankings

Chapter 207 describes the following ascending strength scale:

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Beginner → intermediate → advanced 207 The first three listed strength tiers.
Semi-elite → elite 207 Follow advanced level and precede the Elite Four-related tiers.
Semi-Elite Four → Elite Four 207 Ordinary Elite Four members generally have ace Pokémon at Elite Four level.
Semi-champion → champion 207 Some stronger Elite Four members possess Pokémon in these tiers.
Master 207 Pokémon at this level rival Legendary Pokémon and serve as pillars of regional stability.
  • Strength tier is not a Trainer’s title: possessing a champion-level Pokémon does not make someone Champion; defeating the Elite Four consecutively is also required 207.
  • Species is not the sole determinant of strength: Ash explains that a Trainer’s bond can let non-Legendary Pokémon contend with Legendary opponents 201.

Background / History

Pokémon have inhabited their ecosystem for thousands of years. Long contact with humans has produced cultures and legends surrounding them, while everyday coexistence includes shared emotional experiences such as laughter, anger, and grief 1.

An account of their historical naming describes them as “magical beasts” subdued by humans. Technological advances later made it possible to contain and carry them in pocket-sized spheres, giving rise to the modern name “Pokémon” 216.

The novel also depicts a parallel Earth enlarged by additional mountains, forests, deserts, and oceans. Pokémon live alongside humans there, and Pokémon-related subjects and occupations have become part of compulsory education and the job market 256.

Biology and Appearance

  • Physical diversity: described forms include birdlike Pidgey, metallic Beldum, and Applin, whose true body inhabits an apple 201 241 257.
  • Shiny coloration: Shiny Pokémon differ in color from ordinary members of their species. Examples include a blue Gardevoir and a purple Feebas; their rarity makes them valuable 241 367.
  • Eggs and infancy: Pokémon hatch from eggs. Infancy usually lasts a little over ten days, though pseudo-Legendary Pokémon such as Beldum can take longer 241 242.
  • Individual growth rates: Ash’s Beldum reaches approximately its species’ average length on day eighteen and leaves infancy around day nineteen 248.
  • Species-specific development: Beldum knows Take Down from birth but does not naturally gain additional moves before evolving into Metang; other moves require teaching 248.
  • Incorporeal exceptions: Puni is described as lacking a body and can assume an incorporeal state in battle 203 204.

Personality and Behavior

Pokémon possess rich emotions rather than acting as interchangeable battle tools. They can experience pain, fear, affection, pride, rejection, and a desire for attention. Stro leaves his team after feeling unaccepted because he cannot evolve, while Gloria explicitly tells children hurting Tanabata that Pokémon feel pain and fear 1 232 236.

Individual preferences affect their relationships with humans. Xiao Yan’s Pikachu initially bites him and ignores his attempts at friendship, then accepts him after feeding and battling together. Pikachu prefers traveling on his shoulder to remaining in a Poké Ball; Riolu likewise resists being recalled 6 139.

Personality also influences training. Chespin dislikes being dressed up, while the Gardevoir Naisha has been adventurous and fond of fighting since she was a Ralts. Later instruction emphasizes learning each Pokémon’s temperament instead of assuming all members of a species want the same things 140 211 316.

Abilities & Skills

Types and Matchups

  • Pokémon may have one or multiple types. Applin and Flapple are Grass/Dragon, while Sneasel is Dark/Ice 258 280 283.
  • Type combinations can amplify weaknesses: Applin has a quadruple weakness to Ice-type attacks 280.
  • Type disadvantage is not an absolute barrier. Xiao Yan deliberately sends Charmeleon against Water-type opponents to train it under unfavorable conditions 8.
  • Protean changes Froakie’s type to match its move; using U-turn changes it from Water to Bug 297.
  • The novel includes Holy-type for Puni. Puni reports advantages against Water, Fire, Grass, Electric, and Ice, but disadvantages against Fighting and Dragon 203.

Stats and Natures

Stat Abbreviation
HP H
Attack A
Defense B
Special Attack C / Sp. Atk
Special Defense D / Sp. Def
Speed S
  • These six stats affect battle performance and are influenced by species-specific base stats 319.
  • Natures affect stat development. Riolu’s adamant nature favors Attack at the expense of Special Attack, while Chespin’s bashful nature does not alter its stats 141.
  • A Pokémon’s nature and individual personality can make some moves more suitable than others 316 320.

Moves and Abilities

  • Move categories: physical attacks, special attacks, and status moves 319 320.
  • Move selection: choosing physical or special attacks according to a Pokémon’s strengths matters; Marill’s Aqua Jet and Water Gun produce different results despite equal base power 320.
  • Move combinations: Defense Curl boosts Applin’s subsequent Rollout, whose power increases through continued use 260.
  • Status effects: Thunderbolt paralyzes Charmeleon, creating a risk that it cannot execute its next attack 6.
  • Abilities: every Pokémon has an Ability. Marill may have Thick Fat or Huge Power; the lecture describes Huge Power as doubling physical move power and Thick Fat as halving incoming Ice- and Fire-type move power 320.
  • Teaching methods: Pokémon can learn through practice, instruction from other Pokémon, and reusable TMs 291 292 320.

Evolution

  • Natural evolution can require both sufficient energy and a psychological trigger, such as competitive drive or extreme anger 283.
  • Items can enable evolution. Examples include Clefairy’s evolution stones and the Metal Coat used for Xiao Nan’s Scizor 104 276.
  • Evolution may branch into different types, as illustrated by Eevee’s evolutions 31 218.
  • Nutrition can influence evolution: accumulating sweet nutrients directs Applin toward Appletun 258.
  • Evolution is not universally desirable. Taichi chooses to keep Eevee unevolved, and Xiao Yan defends that choice 31.
  • Rushing evolution can be detrimental; Shen Xunge criticizes Xiao Nan for evolving Scizor too early 276.

Communication and Independent Action

  • Lugia, Arceus, and Mewtwo communicate directly through the mind 152 303 311.
  • Wooper serves as an intermediary when Ash and Yuta question forest Pokémon 291.
  • Pokémon can take initiative: Xiao Yan’s team begins training independently after watching Pikachu battle Suicune 35.
  • Ralts catches other Pokémon with Poké Balls and commands them in battle, creating an opponent whose orders human Trainers cannot readily interpret 320 321.

Capture, Registration, and Care

Capture and Ownership

  • Standard capture: a Trainer battles and weakens a wild Pokémon before throwing a Poké Ball; an energetic Pokémon may struggle and break out 367.
  • Acceptance beyond capture: Yuto argues that genuine recognition from a Pokémon is needed to understand it and draw out its full strength 367.
  • Voluntary partnership: Long-Tailed Excavator chooses to remain Yuta’s Pokémon after Ash frees it from an accidental capture 291.
  • Capture limits: the balls that held Ho-Oh and Arceus begin cracking, demonstrating that containment is not always secure 29.
  • Registration technology: one setting links purchased Poké Balls to national accounts, allowing smartphone access to physical-condition data and helping curb theft 258.
  • Protected species: Ralts can legally be caught with its approval, but Ash requires registration at a Pokémon Center before placing it in a ball 286.

Raising Pokémon

  • Cost: food, specialized supplies, and maintenance can require substantial spending 241.
  • Diet: care must suit the individual. Pichu’s instructions recommend fruit-based meals three to four times daily, while Applin shows a preference for sour food 224 258.
  • Alternative nutrition: Ash uses cooking skills to provide affordable meals, drawing on older practices that predate commercial Pokémon feed and Pokéblocks 258.
  • Development: Yuanjun prioritizes a solid foundation rather than exhausting his Pokémon’s potential through rushed training 207.
  • Medical care: Pokémon Centers treat battle injuries, examine eggs, and advise Trainers on raising Pokémon 138 288.
  • Stress: prolonged stress can cause Pichu to lose fur on its tail 224.
