Background / History

Original life

Xiao Yan’s wealthy parents died in an accident while he was young. Their inheritance arrangements left all their property to him, creating resentment in his younger brother, Xiao Tuo. Xiao Yan took over the family’s corporate group at ten; the responsibility left little time for friends, and Pokémon became a major part of his childhood entertainment 1.

At approximately thirteen, he discovered a mysterious egg in his bathroom. After he poked it 999 times, Arceus emerged and offered to take him to the Pokémon world. Before leaving, Xiao Yan donated the family’s money, leaving the company bankrupt, but set aside living expenses for Xiao Tuo. He carried his parents’ last birthday present—a Charmander plush—through Arceus’s gate of light 1 48.

Arrival and life with Professor Oak

Arceus brought Xiao Yan six years into the past, reducing his physical age to seven. He explained that a growing rift would eventually destroy the Pokémon world and that his diminished power made Xiao Yan’s help necessary. Arceus gave him Charmander, after which Xiao Yan reached Pallet Town and joined Professor Oak’s summer camp 1.

On the camp’s final day, Xiao Yan treated Serena’s injured knee and tried to help her escape a Beedrill swarm. Charmander was severely wounded protecting them, prompting Xiao Yan to shield him before Arceus intervened. Professor Oak treated Charmander, and Xiao Yan promised Serena that they would meet again. He also vowed to become stronger alongside his Pokémon 3.

Xiao Yan subsequently spent three years as Professor Oak’s intern. Oak gave him a home, and Gary became his close friend and rival. When it was time to leave, Xiao Yan declined another starter Pokémon, choosing to begin his journey with his existing partner 4 39.

Appearance

  • Face: Described as young and handsome upon arriving in the Pokémon world; his features lose their childish appearance during his three years at Oak’s laboratory 1 4.
  • Trainer gear: Carries Poké Balls at his waist and uses a backpack and Badge case during his travels 2 17.
  • Mega Evolution accessory: Wears a bracelet whose stone resonates with the stones carried by Umbreon and Charizard 43 48.
  • Documented injury: Takes an Arcanine’s bite on his right arm while protecting Gible 40.

Personality

Xiao Yan treats his Pokémon as family and comrades rather than merely battle assets. He cries over Charmander’s injuries, stages Dragonite’s capture to avoid hurting it, and repeatedly puts himself between his partners and danger. When speaking to Mewtwo, he defines his bond with Pokémon through mutual support and shared achievements 3 10 40 46.

His protectiveness also extends to people. He comforts Xiao Lan, helps her begin traveling, and continues protecting the salesgirl who stole his belongings. However, he can be ruthless toward aggressors: he orders Charmeleon to wound Green Shadow after the man abducts Xiao Lan, then uses him as a hostage 9 12 17.

His confidence and joking manner coexist with fear and insecurity. He boasts against weaker opponents, worries about preserving his dignity when entering Pokémon Tower, freezes under Giovanni’s killing intent, and later doubts whether he can face Mewtwo. Gary identifies his tendency to shoulder difficulties alone and explicitly urges him to rely on their friendship 15 16 18 38 47.

Abilities & Skills

Pokémon battle strategy

  • Type and weather awareness: Uses Pikachu against Suicune and exploits the rain to make Thunder unavoidable 35.
  • Alternative senses: Directs Umbreon to close its eyes and track Scyther through hearing, touch, and air currents rather than competing on speed alone 26.
  • Disrupting concentration: Makes faces during the Sabrina battle, causing Sabrina and Kadabra to laugh and lose focus before Ho-Oh’s finishing attack 21.
  • Surprise attacks: Wins a matchup against Ash’s Pidgeot when Pidgeotto launches Sky Attack after appearing defeated by Hyper Beam 42.
  • Early limitations: His reckless Pewter Gym challenge leaves Charmeleon badly injured; later, he cannot initially overcome Giovanni’s intimidation 5 18.

Pokémon knowledge

  • Prior familiarity: Recognizes Pokémon, characters, and situations from television and games in his original world 1 4.
  • Research experience: Studies under Professor Oak for three years before setting out 4.
  • Item identification: Recognizes a supposedly ordinary green stone as a Leaf Stone and suspects that Elder Fuji’s unusual stones are intended for Charizard’s Mega Evolution 5 16.
  • Practical care: Treats Serena’s scraped knee with ointment and a clean bandage 3.

Mega Evolution

  • Umbreon: First succeeds during the Indigo League match against Xiao Lan; Mega Umbreon uses Dark Pulse and Psychic to defeat Espeon 43.
  • Charizard: Repeated attempts fail on Cinnabar Island. Success comes later during the Prism Tower crisis, producing Mega Charizard X 38 48.
  • Bond-dependent breakthrough: Both documented first successes follow Xiao Yan reaffirming his commitment to the Pokémon involved 43 48.
