Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Becomes a Divine Seal Knight | 21 | Recalled in Wei Ping’s account of an earlier argument about the Knight Temple’s strongest knight. Wei Ping championed the newly elevated Long Xingyu, but this was his opinion rather than an established ranking. Long Xingyu already holds this status when teaching Yue Shen 10 21. |
Appearance
- Build: Tall, considerably taller than Yue Shen when they first meet 7.
- Voice: Slightly deep 7.
- Initial presentation: Appears behind Yue Shen unnoticed; the meditation chamber’s poor lighting prevents Yue Shen from clearly seeing his face 7.
Personality
Long Xingyu is stern and demanding, judging prospective students through practical combat rather than accepting praise of their talent. Initially skeptical of Han Qian’s assessment of Yue Shen, he changes his opinion after witnessing the boy’s confidence, skill, and determination to try again after being injured 7 8.
His severity is tempered by concern. He stops when he realizes Yue Shen’s physical resilience is lower than expected, supplies medicine, and later acknowledges that passing on his legacy in such a short time places an unreasonable burden on the boy. Before departing, he comforts Yue Shen after returning his parents’ weapons 8 9 10.
He favors specialization over divided effort. Although he lets Yue Shen choose whether to pursue both knight paths, he remains convinced that the boy’s mental strength cannot adequately support dual cultivation and takes steps to prioritize Retribution training 9 10 11.
Abilities & Skills
Nine Dragon Steps
A self-created martial technique whose deceptive footwork conceals changes in attack rhythm 9.
- Disrupts an opponent’s reading of his sword’s trajectory, allowing him to bypass Yue Shen’s guard during their first test 8.
- Its core lies in attack rhythm, not merely changes in foot placement 9.
- Repeated use against the same opponent risks exposing that rhythm. Yue Shen progressively reads more of its attacks during their rematches 8 9.
- Long Xingyu teaches the technique’s principles and weaknesses directly to Yue Shen 9.
Lightning Thrust
A rapid thrusting technique that produces dozens of sword afterimages aimed across the opponent’s body 7.
- Uses it with a bamboo sword to test Yue Shen’s defensive fundamentals 7.
- Deliberately restrains its speed and force during the examination 7.
Swordsmanship
Long Xingyu can overwhelm Yue Shen through technique alone, agreeing not to use internal spiritual power during the entrance test 7 8.
- Combines straightforward sword attacks with deceptive movement to break an established defense 8.
- Adjusts his attacks to probe a student’s limits, though he initially misjudges Yue Shen’s unusually low external spiritual power 7 8.
Instruction and Legacy
Passes on his self-created techniques through explanation, questions, and practical combat assessment 10.
- Teaches Yue Shen Nine Dragon Steps and other self-created skills; Seal Character Art appears among Yue Shen’s acquired skills after this training 9 10.
- Provides an Inheritance Ring containing Knight Temple techniques and his cultivation insights 10 29.
- Arranges continued supervision and sparring after his departure rather than leaving Yue Shen without an instructor 10 11.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Storage Ring — Carries training swords and other items, including the twin longswords later returned to Yue Shen 7 10.
- Emerald-green bamboo swords — Supplies one to Yue Shen and uses the other for their entrance test and subsequent training 7 8 9.
- Inheritance Ring — A black ring entrusted to Yue Shen. Contains techniques from both knight paths and Long Xingyu’s self-created skills. Its Retribution material is fully accessible, while its Guardian material is incomplete and includes spiritual-power-gated seals 10 29.
- Medicinal bath bundle — Gives it to Yue Shen to heal injuries and support external spiritual power cultivation 8.
- Holy Fire and Blazing Sun — Repaired Spirit-Demon Grade twin swords belonging to Yue Shen’s parents. Long Xingyu returns them as inherited relics, not as an ordinary equipment reward 10.
Relationships
- Long Haochen — Son and former student, whom Long Xingyu spent years teaching. Initially uses Haochen’s talent as his private benchmark when assessing Yue Shen 7 10 29.
- Yue Shen — Student and chosen successor to his legacy. Repeatedly refuses the title of “teacher,” yet passes on his techniques and identifies Yue Shen as the future leader of the Retribution Knight branch. Han Qian and later narration describe Yue Shen as his disciple 8 9 11 49.
- Han Qian — Finds Yue Shen for him. Long Xingyu thanks him for discovering an excellent successor and asks him to arrange a Retribution Knight instructor after his departure 7 11.
- Ananda — Old rival and Seventh Demon God Pillar. Long Xingyu leaves to fulfill a potentially fatal duel with him 8 10.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Testing Yue Shen
Assigned to assess Yue Shen in the Holy City, Long Xingyu requires him to survive three breaths of attacks without losing. Yue Shen meets the condition, but Long Xingyu continues to investigate his limits. After two exchanges leave the boy injured, he confirms that Yue Shen has passed and arranges accommodation at the Knight Department 7 8.
Passing on His Legacy
With little time available before his departure, Long Xingyu concentrates on transferring his own techniques. He initially urges Yue Shen to focus on Retribution, then gives him access to both traditions through the Inheritance Ring while warning against neglecting either path 8 9 10.
His support for dual cultivation remains qualified. He specifically requests a Retribution instructor, and Yue Shen later discovers that the ring grants much freer access to Retribution teachings than to Guardian skills. Yue Shen also attributes the Knight Department’s lack of available shields to Long Xingyu’s effort to steer his training 11 29.
Departure and Continuing Influence
Before leaving for his duel, Long Xingyu expresses the hope that their next meeting will find Yue Shen a seventh-tier Temple Knight wearing Mithril Base Battle Armor. He returns the boy’s parents’ swords and explains that a top-three tournament finish in two years will earn a spirit furnace; he had considered providing one himself but lacked a suitable furnace 10.
His arrangements continue shaping Yue Shen’s development after he leaves. Han Qian recruits the eighth-order Retribution Knight Wei Ping to supervise training and sparring, and Long Xingyu is later revealed to have arranged Yue Shen’s preliminary assessment in Haoyue City, without explaining his reason to Han Qian 11 29.
