Previous Life and Rebirth

Shangguan Yan was a true deity from an era before the Demon God Pillars descended. After reaching godhood, she contended with the laws of heaven and earth and eventually fell into slumber 225 227.

The Holy Demon Continent’s incomplete laws assimilated deities while they condensed their divine cores. Shangguan Yan nearly became part of those laws, but broke free at the cost of her divinity. As her dispersed consciousness approached extinction, she reconstructed a body in a final gamble and returned to life through the remaining trace of her divine origin power 166 265 266.

Her escape freed her from the same restriction in her new life. Rather than needing the world’s recognition again, she could regain godhood by reaching the required spiritual power and inheriting her former thunder divine core 309.

Knight Temple and Original Squad

Yang Haoyu performed Shangguan Yan’s Sacred Awakening, but its Awakening Stone could not convert her thunder attribute into light. He overcame opposition within the Knight Temple to secure her acceptance as an unprecedented thunder-attribute knight. Beyond that intervention, she largely developed her abilities independently 281.

She won both the individual competition and the team trial tournament in the previous Demon Hunt Squad Selection Tournament. Her team began as Squire-level Demon Hunt Squad One and later became a King-Rank squad under her command 72 100.

Loss of Her Companions

Shangguan Yan brought Jiang Feng on an expedition to the Goddess of Light’s Small World. While she fought A Bao inside, her companions guarded the entrance because their strength lagged behind hers 100 101.

After gaining the upper hand against A Bao, she abruptly weakened and fell from the sky. A Bao transformed into a Heaven-Defying Demon Dragon and crushed her bones. Outside the small world, all five of her companions had been killed; she gathered their golden runes and used a burst of white light to carry Jiang Feng through the enemy blockade 103.

She survived by remaining within Jiang Feng for several months. Her prolonged dormancy reflected both her depleted life force and her reluctance to confront the loss of companions she had loved after five years together. Ye Xiaolei eventually restored her physical body in Dream Paradise 166 185.

Personality

Shangguan Yan is confident, playful, and fond of teasing Jiang Feng. She reads his thoughts, challenges his pride, and jokes about his toughness and romantic affairs. Her boldness is stronger in conversation than in practice: when Jiang Feng reciprocates her flirting, she often becomes embarrassed and retreats 72 91 172 297.

Her lighthearted manner conceals persistent grief over her original squad. The unity of Jiang Feng’s companions helps her rediscover the feeling of belonging to a team, but she never forgets the five companions she lost 185.

She is protective without being blindly compliant. As a member of Jiang Feng’s squad, she supports his leadership while offering advice and refining his plans. She objects strongly when he excludes her from danger, insisting that they face threats together rather than allowing him to bear them alone 228 269 285.

Loneliness frightens her more than death. Her attraction to Jiang Feng begins with curiosity about his unusual potential and develops through their shared experiences. She hopes he can become an immortal companion, but initially refuses to disrupt his relationship with Jiang Xinran 169 265 300.

Thunder Elemental Law

Shangguan Yan retains a former deity’s understanding of thunder. Her control is precise enough to manipulate lightning as naturally as a limb, and her attribute is too powerful for a knight’s Awakening Stone to alter 233 281 295.

• No personal mount: She rejects the magical beasts of Knight Sacred Mountain because their bloodlines and growth cannot keep pace with hers. She wins her selection tournament without a mount 261.
• Original storyline: The author identifies Shangguan Yan as a character involved in several original plotlines. Deleted introduction sequences had originally made her an entry-assessment inspector; revised chapters later added her identity as Jiang Feng’s senior sister 91 107 129.
